I'm not so sure it was Colum. It could very well be Uncle Grant. The MacKenzies and Lord Lovat don't have the money to hire the Galloglass. The Grants are wealthy. They do have the money and Uncle Grant seems to have eyes everywhere. Lord Lovat deeded the property that Lallybroch is built on to Brian and Ellen. The property borders the MacKenzie lands. It was a deal between the MacKenzies and Lord Lovat. Ellen's children would inherit Lallybroch. If she didn't have children, the property would go back to Lord Lovat. Obviously, she did have children and Lallybroch stays in Ellen and Brian's family.
