I hated the ending tbh Dexter shouldn’t have faked his death

TheJoeKerr

I still hated this ending when I binged this 10 years ago. Looking forward to your reaction for New Blood.

Ryan

Most people have this as the worst Series Finale ever. The Lumberjack Incident :(

That scene with Debra missed me up so bad. I couldn't watch show again . Until now.

Janet

Dexter got Elway out of the terminal but the authorities closed and evacuated the terminal and cancelled all flights cause they thought there might be a bomb in the backpack

I feel you Evie. Imagine this being THE ending of the show. And it was for many of us for years until they announced New Blood. WTF (x100) and "put me in a room with the writers I just wanna talk" was going through my mind when I first watched this finale. And you're not exaggerating, it IS one of THE worst series finales. It felt like it came out of nowhere. If they had left out the scene of Dexter surviving, it **might** have been slightly bit better. But the way it was done, it felt like the writers just hated Deb.

The actor who plays Dexter didn't like the Ending either. The next show he had control of so he could try and give the show a proper end . Fans put this ending up there with Game of thrones as far as a bad ending. End of Buffy Spike died . Your not a truly great show if you don't take out one of your most beloved characters. Anya died in Buffy as well . That the tough part about shows .

Debra was having a good heart . She didn't love Quinn but it's nice of her to say . Buffy told spike I love you and he said No you don't . But it's nice to here . I think Debra knew she didn't have much time left an she wanted Quinn to have a happy memory . Debra always had the biggest heart on the show .

If I ranked the seasons . 4 6 2 1 3 7 5

Jennifer Carpenter asked the writers to have Deb die. She said she didn't want to live with the character for years and years, like Michael C Hall has with Dexter. I think he resented it for years until last year. He is always known as Dexter.

Janet

There's a reason why its called the worst finale in tv history. Google it

Janet

But, in season 3 when Camilla was in the hospital dying, Deb told Dexter not to let her suffer if she ever got like that because she wouldn't let him suffer. She said shoot me or put a pillow over my face.

This show was one of the greats. Along with shows like Sopranos, The Shield, Breaking Bad, and Game of Thrones. It was what made the Golden Age of Television so special. But that ending really hurt it. It's very much like Game of Thrones in that way. It was a beloved show that was loved by so many people, but was destroyed by the finale.

Well I am of a different opinion so please don't hate me people lol. I like the ending, not in love with the execution of everything and the road of the last season was a bit messy, strong first half but when Hannah came back it got kinda rushed and sloppy. To be fair this was a rushed written season the 8th season premiered the following summer after season 7 instead of the following fall. I tend to like dark endings and I feel it was poetic of Debra being his final (at least for now) kill as a kill of mercy. She did say in season 3 if she ever became a vegetable that she would want him to pull the plug (paraphrasing here) although I don't think the writers were that smart to remember that. Dexter had a revolving door of show runners first with Clyde Phillips then he left after Season 4. Then with Chip Johanson in Season 5 (the worst season imo) then Scott Buck from Season 6 onward who I like as a writer as he was a writer for Michael C. Hall's previous show Six Feet Under and was in the writers room of Dexter since Season 2. I felt Dexter was always meant to have a tragic ending and I love that it ended in a beautiful tragedy. That Deb was his only human lifeline to the world and in some way he cannot go on without her which what makes their relationship so special. He was so consumed by loss that he puts himself in a self exile from any happiness or anything human. You notice that his inner narration stops after he drives his boat into the storm. He faked his own death and people don't like that. But for me, Dexter would never kill himself as he deems it as weak in his conversation with Doakes in Season 2. This was the only way for him and it makes sense in a Dexter sort of way. I don't feel that it's the worst finale ever (Game of Thrones is so much more worse and underwhelming), I just feel it goes against a lot of fans expectations they either want a happy ending for him or for him to get caught which either wouldn't really sit right with me personally. That's just me tho. I do really love New Blood (hate Resurrection for it's dumbing down in a lot of areas) and excited to see what you think of it. Also if you want to see Michael C. Hall truly act his ass off I would highly, HIGHLY recommend Six Feet Under not sure if you would ever want to react to something like that but I love to recommend it as it is my favorite series of all time and the only reason why I got into Dexter was because of Michael C. Hall. I really enjoyed this journey with you, Evie, and hope to see you continue with New Blood!

Was there a writers strike or something that caused the ending to be like this? Or did they really think it was the best option?

The whole show was a dark story with tiny moments of humor. The ending was a true finale ( as some have mentioned, Jennifer Carpenter wanted her character to die ). As an improvement they could have left out showing Dex had survived, and left it up to the audience to decide whether he did or not. Some people hate this ending, but many people agree that what the Netflix show did was worse. Dex isn't himself, doing numerous stupid things. Just crap writing being preachy and deeply hypocritical in the ending. SMH

Six feet under is amazing
