One word....Elijah 😍Vampire in this universe are like humans, their are not demons, their actions and the choices they make during their immotal and very long life define them. Because of their predatory nature it is very unlikely that they will not kill humans, is in their nature and cannot be helped. But how the extent they give in to their nature and how they use their power that define them, as accetably good people or not, none of them is good or bad, they all live in a grey area, where the longer they live the more likely they have had at a certain point in their life a very dark period.

This episode is a mile stone. So many things were introduced. Elijah, the Originals are the old world says Rose (new character) he calls Katherine with her original name, Katherina Petrova. We know now another piece of the puzzle, Elena is key to break the curse, Stefan and Damon on a road trip and something new was mentioned... Stefan dark past. Bonnie can do many great spells but she has limitations, because witches otherwise would be too powerful. And then the scenes I loved, Jeremy hugging and kissing Elena when she came back from been kidnapped was so heartfelt. And that the last part.....Stefan oh boy!! It took him 150 years to apologize to his brother. Why now? Because he realized that without Damon he cannot possibly protect Elena alone, he needs his big badass brother. So does it sound to you a sincere apology, done with the sole purpose of truly apologizing? It sounds to me more like buttering up his brother. Anyway Damon took it as gesture of affection, and wanted to repay his brother. Notice as HE searched for her necklace, he goes to her room, tell her he loves her and he doesn't deserve her , but his brother does.....(while the song is playing " I was wrooooong...I was wrooooong" ...well...), then kisses on her forehead and make her forget while crying tears of desperation. For the same reason Bonnie doesn’t want anybody to know her weakness, Damon doesn't want anybody to know how fragile he is, he wanted to get it out of his chest, he is convinced he is unworthy of love and after closing the character with Katherine, he is trying to move on here too. This scene is so poetic and heart breaking. Damon is not a bad guy, he was told he isn't worthy by his father, by his brother, by Katherine that used him. A bad reputation does a number on you as it does living a life unloved, and he acts accordingly. But then he has this magnificent acts of total selflessness, like the one when he told Elena his brother needed to drink people blood, or what he did for Liz, or now in Elena bedroom...so who is Damon really? There is a beautiful song by the Who that fits Damon like a glove.... I love this version... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IEQpfA528M I don't know if is a total fortuity or if the writers knowing the song got inspired while writing about Damon character, still...describes Damon so poignantly. It will take a long time for the two brothers to be totally and completely trusting of one another especially for Stefan, selfless to everybody but his brother. This part is wrote very realistically as well, because when your father condition you to think your brother is trash and you are gold, that's how you grow up. Stefan has lots of self esteem and Damon has none, condition reinforced by all subsequent events. Damon is more like a stray dog that if approached may show his teeth for fear of been batter once again barking at you or even biting you, but give him a bone with no meet and out of desperation for any gesture of care and affection, he would gladly lick your hand, wag his tail, and repay you with unconditioned affection and his brother knows that very well. That scene is so incredibly well played by both of them, Stefan looks straight at him, while Damon can't, turning his face away because the bone he is throwing at him is overwhelming him too deeply and he doesn’t want to risk showing. And then he goes and does what he does, but nobody should know and there is a specific reason for that. It is so shocking to me, how Damon character is as deep as an ocean. almost like a real person and I don't know how much the writers actually wrote it as it is, consciously with the actor contributing to it, because if they did, boy, they are serious geniuses and they all have a profound understanding of human emotions and the psychology of damaged people. But certainly Damon wide and high psychological complexity is the closest to a real human being, of any character I've ever came across with in any TV show.

I love everything that you mentioned here! You made me realize that the motive behind Stefan's apology might not be as sincere as I thought, he might have done it for other reasons than just to apologize because he knows he did something wrong and that's a little bit worrying.. I wanted to believe he just felt bad and wanted his brother's forgiveness and everything you wrote about Damon being like a stray dog makes sense... it's so sad how broken he is and how basically all he wants is reciprocated love and despite everything that happened between him and his brother he still wants to have this bond with Stefan... It's kind of like Damon is the little brother and Stefan the older brother who's way too cool to hang out with Damon but as soon as he needs something he will make him feel like an equal (I know it might not be as deep but still) Plus, what you mentioned about their dad is true! it gets lost in the story a little bit for a first time watcher I think because we didn't see much of their interactions but just enough to know that like you wrote, Stefan is like the golden child and Damon is trash in his eyes and we kind of forget that that's what followed Damon and influenced his own self esteem even if he's good at hiding it! I honestly just want to hug him and give him the unconditional love he wants so bad, forever and ever :'(

I know I feel the same and you can't imagine ow much that feeling intesify when you know all his life story. It isn't Stefan fault, Stefan doesn't know his brother because, when he turned he was just seventeen and they much of their life apart, also Damon doesn't burden anybody with his traumas. It's a beautiful jorney of discovery of the two broters but Damon just stole my heart.

What you bring up about Stefan and once again the apology is of course the same matter that took place when Elena was taking before as well after Stefan Betrayed Damon over the grimoire, and we see him Apologize in the same way. Before it was about Stefan apologizing over Katherine, this time it's about him turning Damon. Yet, the reason and cause for the apology are the same. What you have to say about Damon and his lack of self-esteem is one of those matters I see and at the same time disagree with. Self-Esteem comes from a place of self-love, self-respect and last self-acceptance. This is something we see Damon actually exude all the time. What does Stefan suffer from in comparison and what does Damon try to get him to come to terms with? What Damon suffers from is the fear of the rejection as you bring up all the times he has been rejected by those he actually loves. So he learned how to become self-reliant, that builds it own confidence and strength due to being rejected....whistles. So all the rejection he's now suffered has essentially got him to the point we see in him handing over the necklace, that he doesn't deserve love actually, that no one has ever accepted him for he who is, like he has accepted them for who they are. So he is rejecting them, before he has to go through the pain of rejection again. We can go back to scene with Katherine when he just touches her face while they are in bed together, never rejecting her. So we also see the difference of the two brothers, Damon doesn't reject himself, but Stefan does. Stefan needs Elena love because of this to feel better about himself, Damon wants Elena's love, but doesn't need it to feel better about himself.

Ah a great episode and one of my favorites of season 2 as well. We learn new lore and get introduced to Mr. Suit Up himself Eljah! An original that can't be killed as we find out later in the end. Your reaction to when you see him getting killed so easily, is what I have seen several times. It's like that's it, what's so special then about an original! Then the ending. Notice how quickly he healed from the vervain also, like it barely affected him and the wooden stakes being shot into him by Stefan. Tyler and Caroline as you said, who would have thought that would have happened as we see the beginnings of a new friendship taking place here. Then you have a new thing happening with Bonnie and Jeremy as well. Magic has limits and consequences also which keeps it's power in check. Then you have a new thing happening with Bonnie and Jeremy as well. Magic has limits and consequences also which keeps it's power in check. Now we have another rescue mission taking place also this episode. Unlike the first rescue mission that was about Elena and Damon saving Stefan and bonding over this. We have Stefan an Damon doing the same, though on the way to the rescue, do we see them bond really. What I mean is if you pay attention to Stefan's attitude there is a certain cockiness in the way he is acting towards Damon like he knows he has Damon in this trapped position that he is able to use and take advantage off for his own benefit. It's also done in such away that Stefan lets Damon know that he basically has him by the the balls for lack of a better term. Now we get to the part that is the meat and potatoes of the episode. The actual rescue and the ending sequence. Now, when you pay attention to the sequence, Damon actually saves his brother again, Elijah had him dead to rights until Damon stepped in to stop that from happening. Then what happens next, you have a moment taking place between Damon and Elena, and she runs down the steps, but then Stefan steps in and sort of stops this from taking place. Now whether or not Elena was running to hug Damon or Stefan is a debatable topic. Yet, the sequence of events and shots of the stepping in to put a stop to things is done purposefully. Yet, what happens, I feel an even more intimate moment between both Damon and Elena as she is hugging Stefan, she looking at Damon. She acknowledges the fact that without Damon, her rescue wouldn't have happened and also Stefan would have been killed. She mouths the thank you to Damon and he mouths the Sure back to her. Now to the necklace scene, which is equally important. The necklace last time we saw it was when Elena used it to ensure that Damon knew she would keep her promise with Damon to help Damon get Katherine back. We even see Elena mention the bond her and Damon share, the first time she brings up a bond between them. She even takes it off and then we see Damon put it back on her. This references the time and the road trip when she didn't have her necklace, and she was vulnerable, after she sort of broke up with Stefan due to discovering Katherine's picture. Damon is the one who went and find the necklace after the rescue. Now, when we Damon and Elena interact over the necklace this time, we do see Elena afraid, yet is it the fear of not being able to trust Damon? Or is it a different type of fear we see taking place in this scene? It's the fear of vulnerability emotionally, she is actually afraid to hear what he has to say. Yet as he says it, she doesn't stop him from saying it and just stares and listens, she doesn't reject him actually in this moment in anyway shape or form. Then as he goes in to kiss her forehead, she actually thinks he is going in for a real kiss because her actual lips start to react and she was ready to kiss him back. It's both one of the most beautiful moments and saddest moments in the show if you are paying attention. It goes back to only 7 episode earlier in the same situation right after Katherine and his rejection of him and what he did, made him gun shy in this moment. Also, after that we had we also had Elena say she hates Damon. Does she look like she hates Damon here? I will say one thing about songs in the show also, songs from one scene can lead into the next scene, they aren't mutually exclusive to the scene that they are playing in. 😉

@Keith Engel I agree with you on most things but the matter of self esteem, is more complex than that. When you grow up as Damon did, unjustly portrayed as a "constant disappointment" for the reasons we know and Evie has yet to discover, Damon knows that is not the truth, that his reputation is unjust. That brings out a sort of rebellion and self-pride. That is one of the reason Damon doesn't lie and when he is in a position he cannot avoid lying, he find a way with words, omitting certain parts but what is saying is the truth anyway. It is his loathe for lies, because all his human life he had to live with the unjust lie that he is responsible for things he isn't really responsible for. So yes he shuts people out before they, once again, reject him. But when all your life you are consider second best, by everybody you love, you are going to think you don't deserve to be loved and start to act accordingly. Also when for long time you realise that nobody loves you, you have to start to love yourself. But self-love and self-respect are there as defence mechanism, to protect himself from further hurt, because inside Damon is very vulnerable, very damaged, very fragile, it's a compensation system coming from the profound conviction to be unworthy of others love.

Keith Engel
>>59416683

Trust me, I know where Damon's coming from personally in every aspect you also just bring up, why do you think he's my favorite character. The reason I bring up the matter of Self-Love and all the other Self matters is that it's important for love. "Self-love is not selfish; you cannot truly love another until you know how to love yourself."

I too understand Damon because I'm Damon, and I have a Stefan as sister, so much so that is scary how much he mirror my life.

Keith Engel
>>59416683

So I was trying to be brief with out writing my usual 5 page long essays that I can easily do 😉 When it comes to the dynamics of Damon's relationship with himself and with others. Why we see Damon trying to help in the matter of accepting himself, as Stefan keeps rejecting Damon's help in the matter, not realizing that it's not about the human blood or anything else. I know Damon can be summed up in Season 1x18: Stefan: I really liked you a whole lot better when you hated everybody. Damon: Oh I still do. I just love that they love me. Now when it comes to the truth matter: “Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people.” ― Spencer Johnson “It’s difficult to honest with others when you continue lying to yourself.”― Carlos Wallace I'm actually very much considering writing a book that deals with first 4 seasons of the show. The story in it has clear messaging and themes that are implicitly being told in the show. They are not banging you over the head with the message, but it's intrinsically being shown to the viewer. So sad so many think the show is just some shallow teen show as I have encountered at times.

Patpet
>>59416683

I know, I always saying that, this is not a show for teenager, they don't have the ability to understand it. Why don't you do a series of videos on YT explaning the show, with piece of the show, what characters say at a certain point, connections allegories etc. How can I send you a private message to avoid spoilers....also without season 5 and 7 how can you explain Damon and the brothers dynamic?

Keith Engel
>>59416683

Nods, I understand what you are saying concerning Damon's dynamic. The reason the focus would be on the first four seasons is if you were reading this say as an actual book series, I have read the first 4 books btw, but if the actual show was it's own book series. You have 8 books in the series. The first 4 books have a clearly defined beginning, middle, and then ending. Also, within this there is a clear overall theme and message that is taking place, that is intrinsically built into the story. The structure of how they were able to the show, the ability to foreshadow, and other things we see in the first four seasons is all built on the fact that they knew the the ending point they were heading for in the first four seasons. The other information we learn about Damon, though helps fills in the gaps, it's not necessary to actually understand the theme and the message of the first four seasons. Now, as I said I read the books also. The first four seasons really do loosely follow certain plot points that you find in the books. They shuffled these around quite a bit, but on the journey of telling the story of the first four seasons, you could say they had certain mile markers they were writing towards as well, endings they could aim for in each season, and plot points to get introduced in the next season. I will just say, I have watched the first four seasons more, in the past 2 months, at least 3 times, with the first 2 seasons now going on 5 times, than I have watched the last 4 seasons. There is a reason for that.

Keith Engel
>>59416683

So basically what I'm saying, is before you can understand the last four books, you have to understand the first four books and it's message.

Keith Engel

For whatever reason, you can't send private messages via Patreon, only to the creator, not other users. Something they should fix.

Patpet
>>59416683

I find season 5 and season 7 crutial to understand what went on in season one and why, the brother's motivations, why Damon came to town on a dimmer switch? What was their family dynamic when they where human?

Keith Engel
>>59416683

Spoilers in link don't click Evie. Here goes what I'm dealing with and it also shows you what I think the first four seasons are about. The story is being told by Stefan, we experience the story as Elena. This would be one of the first things I would even cover in a book, the story structure itself and how it's even a reflection of Stefan's own character as well.
