The Hellhound and the Banshee are connected, they are both harbingers of death. I don't think the show did a good job of showing their connection without making it seem sexual but I guess the characters would confuse it for sexual if they didn't understand their connection to begin with. Liam's step-dad was established in season 4 when they showed up to Beacon Hills and Liam was in the hospital for a busted ankle.
