Do you remember what "God Johnson" told Lucifer? He said the exact same words as God just said to Lucifer, about being so very proud of the man he'd become... Again I believe it was in fact God speaking through God Johnson at that time. And it is plausible that God planned this whole thing out from even before "Mum" escaped from hell. And also plausible that "Mum" was in on it - that look she gave towards the heavens when Lucifer said she could stay - was sort of mischievous and kinda like a wink and a nod to God that the plane is afoot.... He/they could have simply put things in the paths of their children so they could grow and learn the lessons they needed to learn, and ultimately end up here at this episode's climax. Surely All Knowing God could see Michael was trying to gaslight him, but if this retirement was a ruse, it played into God's plan too .... Food for thought anyway. The captain has turned on the fasten seat belts sign, as we are about to encounter some severe turbulence..... (Michael vs Lucifer for God obviously isn't going to be a civilized debate now that he has the flaming sword)

i think your comments are spot on. It does make one think, as Luci said to his father just before he and mom left "How much of this was your plan?" and then God chuckled knowingly!

i thought this was a great episode all about supporting each other, partners etc. It seems God and Goddess are reconciled and ready to support each other in the new universe. There was much to smile about and also much to consider in the drama of each character's journey. Yes, Ella is still struggling but we hope she will find a way through. Dan seems finally in a more accepting and peaceful place in the world, Luci and Chloe are showing us that they are closer and supportive of each other ( if Luci can finally feel worthy of her!) and even Remiel (reluctantly) gave her support to Luci! but Maze is still conflicted in her emotional growth and I wonder how that will all play out as she has chosen to give up on the support that Eve offered her. The ending scenes with Luci finally getting to hear those words from his father that he was (we now realise) so desperate to hear for millennia, was just so heartbreakingly beautiful and it still makes me tear up on the re-watching! AND NOW MICHAEL! You were right, we shouldn't have forgotten Michael- buckle up for the last two episodes as D Boss suggests it is unlikely to be civilised debate about who should be God.

If God were speaking through God Johnson, then why would he have such a hard time saying the same thing to Lucifer? I think it was just a callback for the fans, nothing more.

Because he always does his mysterious ways, which is to respect free will of all beings, human or celestial. He knew Lucifer would discover that Mr Johnson was not actually god, so Lucifer could choose to ignore what was said. Three things: Why was God unable to answer Lucifer's question directly at the family dinner? Where 3 of his sons were present? (Luci asked "do you love us") God could not or would not answer directly even though Amenadiel is his favorite, yet he did say the same thing to Amenadiel on their golf outing - that he loves him and is very proud of the man he's become... He no longer needed to be careful with his revelations as he was no longer going to be their "god". And second his conversation with Trixie in the subway. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rQ75hbFAII starts at time 1:40 he states Lucifer's behavior may be his fault, and "I tried to give my children just the right amount of free will, the right amount of responsibility and consequence" "Looking back on how I raised Lucifer, I'm not sure I got it all right" And finally, how did god Johnson know it was Samael, before he knew his name was Lucifer? Of course you can believe it was nothing but an easter egg for the fans - we have free will to choose what to believe and not believe. However given the depth of interwoven story lines these magnificent writers go to in so many respects to weave an intricate tapestry of story threads, I choose to believe it was God speaking through Mr Johnson.
