I don't think it's a complete betrayal of his character. He is relapsing for sure. But anyone on the mend can relapse, it's a common thing that happens in real life. You also have to remember that these girls are bullies, the type that Rudy would have little compassion towards. In fact, at the point he got carried away, he still feels like a victim of that bullying since his Roxy figurine was destroyed. Something that Rudy feels VERY strongly about. Him relapsing at that point is perfectly within character.
