Miss Maybelle, let me be your hopping frog (Patreon)

And some more cross posting from my social media...well, in parts. I think some of the sketches with Walter are actually unpublished, tho...so...yay ^^

Because the request for more side characters, not only in the comic but also here on Patreon, I thought I drop I few sketches I did throughout the year mostly for myself (and to slowly upload on Instagram etc)

I think I showed off Maybelle, a warm grey tabby cat, and her brother Dallas. But aside of the chibis I never showed off their colored version here yet :/

Anyway, both of them are characters for 'Katzen-Jammer!' and....it will be a long long time until they actually appear within the comic. However, they are important for Walter's flashback (you know, the whole reason why he ended up in the garbage dump). So I essentially had to already write and design them and...I love drawing May so much, it's kinda a pain in the butt because nobody really knows who she is so...it's kinda weird to show her off -_-

Either way, I don't want to give away too much about these two and their relationship to Walter. Although you can probably guess that it seems to be a rather friendly one for most of the time ;)

Maybelle is a painter who lives with her older brother in small all cat community somewhere hidden in the desert. Although Dallas looks rather small and petite, he's indeed the older one of them. May loves and cares for him deeply. But unlike his bubbly sister Dallas often comes across as cranky and cold, which mostly stems from him feeling like a burden to his sister. deep down he loves her as much as she loves him. But on the outside he fails to express it properly. However, May knows him well enough to not hold his moods agains him.

Originally I thought of them as actual siblings. But after thinking about it for awhile I decided that Dallas actually adopted May as his baby-sister. In a nutshell, due to being a bit sickly Dallas was abandoned by his actual family and stumbled over a way too young May, who was just as lost as he was. He named her Maybelle (as in lily of the valley-which in the flower language means 'return of happiness') and together they went from shelter to shelter, unable to ever get properly adopted due to people not wanting to take siblings (especially if one of them appeared to be fragile and ill). This was btw the root that Dallas always felt like he's holding Maybelle down. She's bubbly, cute and healthy, therefore could've had a safe home fairly easily. But since she refuse to leave him behind that never panned out for her. (Keep in mind, I am still basing the backstories of my characters on tales of actual cats. so a little disbelief needs to be suspended ^^")

So, what has Walter to do with them....well, as you see, Dallas is a Calico. And Walter had a run in with a particular group of Calicos...and that's where are the threads meet. But more about that some other time ^^

Despite that Dallas an Maybelle won't be in the comic themselves for a long time, there is actually a lot of foreshadowing already in the comic or upcoming. For once. Walter referred to a 'murder woman' (which is poorly phrase and just meant a 'killer woman' as in an 'amazing woman') in chapter1 of 'Katzen'. I know, that's a bit vague. But he was referring to Maybelle since he's especially fond of her.

Also in 'Kitten' he referred to Dallas in one sentence as his 'could've been brother in law', once again implying his fondness of May and that he actually had more serious plans with her. Sadly, in the same episode another line dropped that indicated that...things didn't go well at all...

and finally, a very specific  reference to May...one of Walter's bracelets is actually her's (I think so far only one person on Twitter notice that ;))

There will be more references to these two, more in 'Katzen' than in 'Kitten', tho. But the fact that Walter is playing around with other ladies, and his dislike for Calicos...I think it can already give you a good idea of the nature of his and her story...

Sorry for the wall of text. there is a lot in my mind about these two characters. As I said, I like to draw them and they are pretty important for Walter's story. I'm not sure if everything in my mind translates properly to you, who have no idea about the characters as of yet...but I hope you enjoy seeing some designs and that I can at least spark a bit of your interest ^^
