[Have some music while you read!]

The history of Japan is a repeating cycle of new gods rising up, said gods becoming corrupted, and being overthrown as false, old gods. This is, essentially, how its even taught in Japanese schools!

The next video is going to be a very deep-dive into just this topic, to explain the trope of god-slaying in JRPGs.

You, my kind patrons, get an interesting sneak peak. Did you know that Mitsubishi, the car manufacturer, is also the largest corporate entity in Japan?

The heart of Mitsubishi isn't it's car manufacturing though... Mitsubishi is the world's 6th largest bank by total assets. The top four banks are Chinese state owned banks; number 5 is JPMorgan Chase. This means, Mitsubishi is a larger bank than HSBC, or Citigroup, or Bank of America.

Mitsubishi also has its own chemical company: Mitsubishi chemical. And it's own power company: Mitsubishi Power. And it's own Space Division: Mitsubishi Electric Space Systems. And it's own nuclear power company: Mitsubishi Atomic Industry.

The photo above is one of Mitsubishi's many industrial plants. If you're a JRPG fan... does this all remind you of anything?

The meaning of the name "Shinra," the company in FFVII I've been alluding to in this post, requires a good understanding of Japanese business practices.

The Kanji are as follows: "神" Shin. It means, god, or almighty, or divine. "羅" Ra. It means, literally, net -- but, here, it is more of an abbreviation that signifies "all-encompassing" or "conglomerate." In other words, its a keiretsu -- not dissimilar... to Mitsubishi.

The God Conglomerate -- a false god, building a false heaven: the entire story of FFVII, isn't it? A story told time and time again in Japanese history.

I think this video is shaping up to be my favorite one yet! I hope you will also find it compelling!

Hello Moon! Just started donating, and thank you for making these videos! Quick question: I have noticed a lot of others themes in Japanese Media related to "Alien" creatures that suck away resources and leave the planet to die. Two big examples that come to mind are Chrono Trigger and Kill La Kill. Is this something you plan to also touch on in this topic for your video?

Thank you for your support, Joel! The alien take on this trope is also quite interesting, and it will be covered in the video! Consider not just Crono Trigger or Kill La Kill (which I admit, I am unfamilar with), but also Giygas in the Mother series, or Jenova in FFVII!

Japanese media also often features explorations of its history and discussions of its future, but in a way that allows for plausible deniability! It is not characteristic of Japanese culture to confront these kinds of social issues loudly, and publicly, but to do so subtly, and through implication. The alien sub-trope within the trope is, I think, a reference, sometimes even subliminally, to the somewhat alien, or more specifically, Western, concept of individualism/consumption that arrived with the "invasion"/forced opening of Japan by Commodore Perry. Is this the "root" of Japan's current woes? Is Western culture the current "false god?" Or is it capitalism/unchecked growth? Or is it an egotistical ruling class, born with the DNA of both of the above? Is the "false god" and the current suffering of Japan the fault of Jenova, of Shinra, or of Sephiroth? The answer isn't necessarily clear, but the discussion is loud, if one knows where, and how, to listen!
