Hey everyone,

I've been rereading the last 20 chapters and making lots of notes for the debrief scene in chapter 178. I wrote some of those chapters 2 years ago now, so I really needed the memory refresh!

I made a good start on the next chapter, which will include the return to Genthalas, and once everything is wrapped up there, it's time for a guided tour around the StarForge with Niskera.

I've written about 5k words so far, but I'll just wait and publish it all in one go as soon as the chapter is finished.

While it is true that you owe us twenty chapters and put out less than one per month, I want to see where this story goes. That’s why I’m your patron. When you first had trouble working, I increased your subscription because I was worried about how you would survive in a state to finish this. I would prefer whole chapters over half chapters simply because it’s a more efficient use of my time. I was thinking of rereading from the beginning. Is there a link to an index of the final editions of the whole story?

What was exciting about finishing ‘early’ was that the ubiquitous all nighter at the end of the month would have produced another 1/3 to 1/2 chapter. Waiting another 31 days for that half chapter is so disappointing. Or 30 days… we do have a one month streak of finishing a day early. For once can you please finish a chapter by the 15th.

Took you 2 months to write one chapter. Precharged 2 chapters during that time. Tell me again how you plan to get caught up. He literally can't skip the placeholders because it would mean you going over half a year without pay. At this point I've lost interest in your half assed story.

I understand that some people like constant communications for social reasons, but what does 1-3x updates per month that basically say ‘I haven’t written anything because [fill in the blank excuse]’ do for anyone? I’d rather have him write words in the story instead of to us. Pretty clear he’s not going to do either until the last day of the month.

I think I am as well, lost interest. I just could not get into the last chapter with chapters being split it loses the continuity of the storyline I don’t want to go back and read 10, 15,20. Chapters to get back into it. I also am not sure if I want to cancel just yet, I know he will never catch up, he is way to far behind to give us the great story he did in the start. I am very unimpressed with him at this time if he burnt out stop writing get a job take some time off see if you want to still write if not take to money we have given you and try to live with it.

It would be nice Tefler to publish a chapter mid month and at least a partial or full chapter at end of month. Would do a lot for your credibility and shows effort that would be appreciated and applauded.

Tefler. You are getting lots of advice. Not sure if you read it or just ignore your Patreon's. I have read lots of the comments, mostly 'please post more' 'quicker' and 'more often'. Many have tried to look at it from your position, not that I or they probably know your circumstance. I would like you to consider some of the circumstance of some of your Patreon's. I imagine I am not unique as one of your readers. So I am retired and getting on in years, having followed your story for some years now. Beginning to worder if it is worth hanging on, as it seams unlikely that you will finish this story in my lifetime. That demoralises me and makes it likely I will give up, as never getting any resolution of the story. I believe I read in some of your comments (from some time ago) that you no longer work, as you thought you could get sufficient income from writing. From that we all believe you need an income stream, which petreon can provide, and it has done so in the past. So some suggestions for you to consider - not that most have not been told to you before. You need to reduce the size of your chapters or you will never get back to having no placeholders. Being an ex accountant, numbers make it you will never recover if you stay at the size of chapter you are producing at the moment. Not unless you can re-vitalise yourself to producing at least 2 or 3 times what you are doing now. The other thing you need to do is increase your number of 'customers'. You are over 30 chapters ahead of what you have published on the free sites, add an occasional new chapter to them, with the petreon link in your pages it may well bring new readers (or even some of the ones who have left petreon in the past to return). It just costs you the time to update those free sites and will not impact otherwise, that will add additional income to you. You must surely stop any increase of placeholders. No new placeholders that do not match a competed chapter. If not I see the rest of your Patreon's continuing to leave one by one. Ideally you need 2 posted complete chapters per new placeholder. That will still take 18 months for the backlog to clear, but just a start to doing that will help bring your Patreon's back to you. When I was just 45 I was made redundant. I was with a large company and they employed an 'expert' to advise us on how to get a new job. The main advise was "You have a job, you are a salesman with one product to sell, yourself". So it as a re-statement of my own position that got me a new job. You need to do something similar. You need to tell yourself you have a job to do and you need to follow through with what needs to get that job done. You have a talent for writing this story. Do you have more stories to tell? If you do not finish this one, most people will not consider starting a new story of yours. But finish this and the future is then down to you to forge.

I'm really sorry to break it to you but " the Tefler" you all came to know died 1 and 1/2 years ago. His grand nephew found all the passwords and is stringing the already finished chapters along. As the pre finished ones are diminishing now, after almost 2 years, he will start an attempt to finish the story by writing it himself. This will be awkward at least. So all in all John did die in one of the battles with a progenitor. So sorry guys.

...Wow, Johnboy lives / reads in another AU than I do, .... interesting, ... -- And speaking of Alternare Universes. there are a number of pretty good AU fanfiction stories (incomplete of course), ... written by DuncanIdaho2014, ... This Fanfiction Author wrote most of his versions of TSM back when Tef stopped publishing any chapters for a large number of months, ... Enjoy, ... ;-) ttfn

Looking back since May we have been seeing a consistent 2 placeholders per chapter finished. The last 4 months seem to show 2 chapters with 4 placeholders vs the previous 1 chapter and 2 placeholders a month. Yes it's great the story is continuing, if only at a snails pace, but like another guy said, the placeholders need to stop. 22 chapters owed vs 8? last year is a very bad trend.

It took 9 months to get the chapters I had been charged for as place holders after I dropped my membership , it was only 5. I figure if Tefler continues at his current pace it will take 4 or 5 years to catch up to the place holder count of chapters owed that have been paid for by patrons and that does not include the monthly charges for place holders in those 5 years. Those of you who have stayed and kept paying for place holders will never get caught up. It will take a drastic change in Teflers pace of writing to do that, I don't think that will EVER happen.

Problem is most of us have been here for years when he posted regularly, and posted lots of epic chapters. These days he cant even finish a chapter in a month. Its more like he starts the chapter writing 2 days before the end of the month and ends up with a very mediocre chapter. He then posts up to 3 placeholders to milk the customer base. Thankfully he has dropped off of that and is only putting one placeholder out. He needs to go cold turkey on that and post more than half a chapter a month before he can win much good will out of people here. This last month he showed a glimmer of interest, so I am supporting him again in hopes he can find his muse and start getting back on the program again.

Hello Tefler. Here’s an idea (you’ve probably already thought of). How about destruction ruins on singularity shells (or the other ordinance weapons) to penetrate progenitor ships? Yes, it’s best to capture them. However, I’m thinking of the effect of a single hit causing major damage might create shock and fear in any progenitor on the receiving end of such a weapon. Or perhaps imbuing them with Helen’s positive psychic energy? Hmmm. I guess I need to get some sleep. I might have mentioned this before.

Sorta. We’ll need Tef to clarify. Remember, the first time John used it in a nearly unmodified form the result wasn’t black. Also, it’s implied draining psychic energy IS life force beyond a certain point. Or a difference could be giving (positive) versus taking (turning it negative). When thralls were used, it took their energy (psychic life force). John gave psychic energy. Perhaps that’s the defining point?

Gubment Cheez is more right on this. Imagine if you order something online and shipping was offered for only $1, but when the item arrived the delivery guy says he won’t hand you your package unless you pre-pay for the next two $1 deliveries. So you pay the guy an additional $2 at the door and he hands you your package. And you don’t feel too bad because while you actually paid $3 for shipping you at least get your next two orders delivered and won’t have to pay an additional penny for them. Except on the next order, which uses one of the prepaid deliveries, the guy at the door demands another pre-payment for an additional two delivery fees. So you hand the guy another $2 because you have no choice if you want your package… and so on. If you always must pay $2 for every $1 delivery at what point do you realize the cost of shipping is $2 and the shipper is false advertising $1 shipping. Tefler’s scheme is even more extreme. He delivers an average of 1/2 chapter a month but only delivers it if you pre-pay for 2 full chapters. So you pay 4x more than the asking price and hold IOUs that can only be cashed in if you keep paying 4x more than you agreed to pay. This will continue until Tefler stops writing. At that point you will be the guy shouting from the mountain tops that Tefler will never receive an additional penny for those IOU chapters. While technically true, it’s the most hollow of truths since those IOUs are worthless and you have been taken for whatever you paid for them. A honest assessment would be to decide if each chapter Tefler delivers is worth $4. By itself it’s not a lot of money. As a 20 chapter book though… I wouldn’t pay $80 for a space fantasy book even if was hard cover, leather bound, gold gilded, and in a slip case. Definitely not if it wasn’t any of those things because it’s a digital book. But a little at a time, for good writing and a story I like? I guess I’m willing to massively overpay.

Hey Telf, TSM is the best series I have ever read. I as well as others would appreciate half chapters over waiting for finished material. It is difficult to wait and the promises are not reliable. Please just do the work and update often. I pray for your family for health going forward.
