The aftermath of the Battle of Regulus!

As we discussed in the recent poll, this is the nearly finished version, and I'll just make a few minor tweaks before posting it to the free sites.

I hope you enjoy it!

Well there goes my earlyish night.

69 ayyyyyy lmao

Same problem as last time, it's not coming up on iOS as a .txt or .docx file.

Axi

Woo something to finish my shift with =D

Tefler

Sorry I haven't been that active in replying to feedback for the last week, I was busy finishing off this chapter. There were loads of really interesting discussions after the last one, and it was hard work to stay focused on writing instead of chatting on the comments! I'll spend some time tomorrow going through and addressing the questions you guys have raised.

temepeach

hi, well done again, buggered the night up but so what. I thought the sex at the beginning was more sexy so well done. That uebarfast healing bugged me a bit, I wondered whether the burns would have healed so well even in a tub full of progenitor cum ('just lie in the brine for an hour and take little sips every 5 minutes'). But as it's the first time this story had some unbelievalbe parts to it...

Morningfrost

Thoroughly enjoyed this chapter, Tefler. Interesting tidbit about how Federation troops would likely refuse to attack the Lion to try and seize his tech. That's something that I think we had overlooked a bit in previous discussions. If the Admiralty wanted to do something underhanded to get a hold of the Invictus, they'd likely have to employ civilians, because the military itself knows good and well who has saved their asses, both from the Kintark and also from Nexus. And now, the excruciating wait for chapter 70 begins lol. ~Morningfrost

Brad D

The Terrans won't quit trying to get that ship and the people. Even if 99% of the military refuse, they can find someone. The military is full of people who will obey orders blindly or believe any bullshit they are feed.

Donovan

Sadly, the people who might take on a mission like that, are the special forces. As long as the teams believe that it is what is best for the Terran federation. And since they are normally a lot more loyal than the standard troop, they aren't as hard to convince sometimes. Especially since one of two of the commanders might hold a grudge that some retired alien upstart could jump through ranks that quickly... Or mercs... credits do go a long way sometimes. 750mil to capture alive, 500mil just the ship... lol. Make it a billion and I'm sure the entire underworld would be hunting for his head.

Donovan

Becides that rant, throughly enjoyed it. ...now the excruciating wait begins... withdrawals!!!!

Z McCrocklin

I'm just a bit disappointed that we didn't get more action. At least the Dragon March has been resolved & we're on on our way to the Unclaimed Wastes! Can't wait to see what Dana cooks up, along with Sakura's development!

Muledrvr

Pardon me Tefler... But they seem to have left the Raptor behind at Port Medera. Since all the extra injured were in the hanger bay, the Raptor had to fly separate and land nearby at the dock. Behinds the scenes collection probably, but "in story" it got left behind.....

CJ Mora

A really good read! I think there's another factor that will give the admiralty pause...the realization that John has tech from the alien nations surrounding the Federation must make them realize that if the alien nations banded together they could replicate John's kill power by combining forces. (We know that Dana's brilliance made this possible, but THEY don't know that.) The admirals have to consider that these other species might take affront at stealing the technology John promised not to share...the Admirals need John to cooperate so it becones the act of a single rogue entity, and not a nation.

Mateo laughed, and said, "He's dating my sister!" LMAO: Mateo is getting laid! Just knowing "THE LION" on a personal basis is enough to get all the hot women he can handle....lol.

Cody Strong

A lot of loose ends tied up. I'll reread it after lunch but all in all I would have to say a very good chapter.

Terra_Lupis

Really good chapter. Love that some of the 'political ideas' that were discussed in the comments of chapter 68 were incorporated. Couldn't help by laugh at how John acts like a bigger brother to Mateo by cockblocking him on the Damocles and in front of Jack as well. Am anxious to see if Jehanna or the service girl from the emporium on Gravitus or become the PR girl/team for the Invictus. Lastly, nice way of finishing chaper 69 off with not one but two simultaneous 69s.

David Sohlstrom

Tefler Thank you for great chapter that did NOT end in a cliff hanger. Now the wait for chapter 70

Very nice. Certainly was an easygoing chapter, especially compared to the last one, but that's what we needed, a nice quiet chapter to take the edge off the adrenaline rush. I'm looking forward to what happens next, especially with Tashana, the R&D by Dana and Rachel (Rachel still has Kindralax's blood to look at), Sakura's development, the next round of upgrades for the Invictus, the "interview" with Jehenna, the return to Ashanath space, etc.. Yeah, there's a lot to look forward to. Interesting tease with Clara failing the DNA scan on the Raptor, and with Sakura seeing the psychic link. I can only imagine what sort of implications those tidbits will have. I don't suppose Sakura is going to become something like a sub-Matriarch, with a mixed race squad of gorgeous super commandos under her? I'm sure more than a few Maliri commandos would be happy to volunteer. Also, I just had a thought. Are we sure that humans don't have some kind of behavioral mod in their DNA that makes them more susceptible to Progenitor influence? It doesn't seem to be nearly as potent as the Maliri mod, but still, it seems like people are bending to John's (and the BSP with regards to Lynton) will rather easily. I did notice one little thing: just before John took Alyssa and Sakura into the Ready Room early in the chapter, you referenced Sakura as being a brunette, then a few lines later said she had black hair.

Jedi Khan

I'm wondering...what happened to Norwood? Will we see him again, or did he vanish into the wind like Commander Rupert Grant did? Also, does High Prelate Zorlin get to meet the man who ruined his perfect plan so spectacularly? I'm guessing if he does, it's going to be at least a month or two down the line, since John's already moved on.

GrandPaM

Having read all but the last few pages, I think you missed a few things, Tefler. For example, the personnel they rescued, these are military people, and Military sorts do require a certain degree of ceremony. The rescued people themselves would have not left Invictus informally and piecemail, they would certainly have construed, amongst themselves, at least, a formal departure ceremony involving standing in formation and a formal salute to their rescuers, the Lion and his Lionesses. They may have awaited arrival at Port to do so, but they are departing from an Admiral, and military/Navy sorts DO have their required formalities for what is effectively a change in their Command. As soon as they were aboard Invictus as rescuees, they were effectively in and at John's Command, formally, and at the port, he is relinquishing that Command. At such an occasion, official military formalities are required. John would doubtlessly be aware of this as well (as would the base commander and the medical Commodore). Also, using Invictus as the fastest means of ferrying the medical casualties from the scene of the battle to the rear support areas was great, there would have been some formal requests - or at least official communications - on the subject. Also was there not a hospital/medical ship amongst the reserves attached to the invasion fleet? One would expect so for a massive invasion fleet. Another opportunity for Rachael to help there would have arisen - or Invictus would have needed to dock with that ship(/those ships) or multiple shuttles to transfer the casualties. The other point of the formal communications regarding the transfer of the medical cases is that it would have taken some time and it would have been known amongst the assembled fleet's ship commanders. ..and they would have by then formed some sort of local ship traffic control network (a standard fleet control thing - especially given the security concerns governing the captured/surrendered Kintark fleet) and requested navigational information on the planned departure vector of Invictus from the system - and out of respect for The Lion and what he'd just done to save their collective assses, would very likely have maneuvered several of the more intact ships (possibly both Terran and Kintark) into an honor corridor (think men at arms with raised swords here) along Invictus' departure vector. Again these are military types, and they think about things like this. Were John as respected as we think, something like this would certainly have occurred. It would have been no secret, except perhaps from John/Invictus (for obvious reasons). It also would probably have happened regardless of Admiral Buckingham's (or the other Admirals') feelings on the matter.

Donovan

From the COB(Chief of the Boat)- Sir, we need to render honors, this man just saved our lives. CO - he's a threat! Why would I do that? COB - Sir, he saved our collective asses, the ship knows, he is also medevacing our wounded. We need to render honors so the crew can thank them for saving our lives. CO- your right, thank you Chief. (XO, coordinate with other ships, see if we can make something happen) (think a conversation between Mom and Dad) (wow I hate autocorrect that happens with IOS)

Donovan

The salute would be the flashing of the running lights, timed to either flash as the inviticus was flying past, or the fleet flashing in time with each other.

Roy Lewis

Ok tefler another great chapter. But I am really excited because I think I cought something. In the exchange between Rachel and the doc Larson? But here is a thought if the trancarans"not sure the spelling" are made of rock well metal is a form of rock, yes. Just a thought.

weird song

John is going to have to consider what he wants known about Sakura to the public because the admiralty might blackmail him to give over his technology in exchange for not prosecuting Sakura for her past crimes even though she did them unwillingly.

Donovan

They don't have to officially know about Sakura, or it could be they found a cryogenic pod with her in it, (they did) and she wanted to join. Or she was a slave (which she was) and wanted to join. Half truths work wonders, and you then don't need to remember the lie. Or they can implant a completely valid history for her, as a new identity, by hacking and implanting a virus. Just fly by any comm beacon.

weird song

A idea you might consider would be to have the invictus crew to discover some spying gear left behind by some injured special force personal that were transferred to the invictus in a few chapters

xd

Two questions : 1. Will they reach Tashanas location in the next chapter ? 2. Is Tashana in Unclaimed Wastes ? Cus I found a fragment with Edraele saying she spend 10 years there but now is at the location known as ‘The Underworld’, is that still in Unclaimed Wastes ?

David Sohlstrom

The universe may not even know who Sakura is. She was in her former life as an assassin very good at it and I believe did not leave witnesses. When her transformation is complete she will not even look like her former self so I don't think John has anything to worry about.

Grimlakin

Not to mention she will be different on a genetic level as well thanks to his genome splicing spermitizoa.

xd

Unclaimed Wastes from what I hear don't have border with Terran Space, so there's a pretty good chance of seeing some pirates and other scum that are not Terrans, maybe even some new species. I don't know what others think but for me it would be fun too see some Drakkar pirates, although I don't know how would they interact with other species there. Still they could be one of the factions of Unclaimed Wastes.

Grimlakin

I really want to see Sakura step into a room with a group of tuff as nails hard asses and mop the floor river style. I hope she doesn't turn into a busty bombshell but a sexy small Asian is still fine. Just fine tuned to beyond her cybernetic abilities before.

Jedi Khan

I just realized something...we're slowly seeing Faye get cleared to control just about every aspect of the Invictus. We've seen her operate the Pulse Cannons, then she used the Beam Lasers to support the fleet against the Kintark. Now we've seen her fly not only the Raptor, but the Invictus too. And this is all on top of her previous role of Watch Commander, and de facto guard of the cyber realm. Is she working towards being able to operate her own ship? Perhaps a fleet of ships, each with their own server hosting a copy of her so they can operate independently, yet still linked back to her as the central server? She'd be in sole command and control of those ships until John recruits enough people to fill the crew allotments.

Tom Turner

Ahhhhh! Just finished the second read thru. Couldn't believe that the story was up for two whole hours before I found it! This was another stellar job Tef, thanks again! Also, many thanks to all the contributors to this chat, I know that misery loves company and your thoughts add greatly to me (and I am sure quite a few others) being able to endure the next six to ten days till our next fix.

xd

Another thought, are alien women on board BSP Gabrielle Lynton mentioned by any chance Maliri ?

Grimlakin

Powerful anti progenitor weapon systems... All we need is alyssium discarding sabot rounds that are highly charged explosive. Laser fire to disable the shields. 5 to 10 times shaped alyssium rounds to punch through the hardest armor. They could have a traditional core still and the shell would. Protect them and be designed to be part of the fragmentation round. Also it seems that John is the son or. First successful clone of this progenitor and its very strange there are not others. I think he is being molded into a new leader/overlord and its possible the other progenitor sees him as a son or future host of his own psychy. Will be interesting to see if he can breed. Also another note... Based on known history... Alyssa is the very first female progenitor. Odd to me that nobody has brought that up in the crew.

"Irillith, now we're back in Maliri Space, can't you just get a new hacking deck to replace the one powering Faye?" Shaking her head, Irillith replied with regret, "I'm afraid not. It was unique; a gift from Tashana, who found it during an excavation of an old Progenitor facility." I am just curious that there has not been much/any discussion between the crew regarding the hacking deck seemingly coming from the Progenitoer, and the implications of having more AI's like faye but maybe even more powerful in the galaxy. Or is this something that is going to be brought up when/if they find Tashana? Might need to upgrade their anti cyber hacking suite even more robustly?

Tefler, I almost never comment on these sites. I have read a lot of different types of amateur writing and this is top notch stuff. I wouldn't ever have though to find it in erotica lol. As the ship becomes invincible you're going to have a fun time coming up with "realistic" situations that actually put them in danger so I look forward to what you're going to do. I will echo the sentiments of someone earlier that I wouldn't want Sakura to turn into a busty bombshell. I am really looking forward to seeing a top notch kickass bodyguard and her ability to see psychic connections would be quite useful against certain enemies...

Well, one thing I see is Rachel is about to get her recognition. The medical community AND those who were saved by her two medical breakthroughs will push hard for her to be recognized for her efforts. And T-Fed can make quadrillions through the pharm companies giving them the rights to manufacture and distribute the Voss line of cell regenerative creams, ointments, and beauty products....don't sell that last one short folks. Aging is a breaking down of cell structure.

PLRus--Founding member of the TSM F5 club.

Okay: the mass drivers. Because of the massive recoil, Dana may have to create another, dedicated, inertia negation device to protect the (relatively) light Invictus core framing from damage. Incorporating it into the hard points for the new and improved singularity drivers perhaps?

PLRus--Founding member of the TSM F5 club.

I like the idea of crystal alysium being used as a penetrative outer coating. I know that there are ceramics out now that allow a bullet to be pre scored to fragment upon some initial penetration. Perhaps one of the new elements Dana discovers will be some type of very stable but highly explosive (say with a smaller explosion as a detonator like what is necessary for a hydrogen bomb). Shards of crystal allysium shattering into dart like particles and moving at near light speeds through the bowels of a spaceship would be terrifying indeed.

Don's Projects

Faye doesn't need a fleet of ships, she can borrow one or more from the enemy any time.

Brad D

One problem they have right now is numbers.  If you get enough of an enemy to swarm them they are in danger.  I proposed another assault shuttle or some drones to help with that.  But without disposable troops they are limited in their response.  They will need minions for Faye that they can leave behind.  Rig them with termite to melt down, acid capsules over the control boards, something to limit the loss of tech when they are recovered. They are also exposed when they are out of the ship.  Sneak attacks are also a problem.   They could be walking by a crate and it explode and they are dead or seriously injured.  A grenade thrown into their party would certainly suck.  Someone could open fire with am automatic weapon at then.  They are at an award ceremony and a sniper ruins their day. There are many more situations that would seem possible to the admirals, the assassin or their enemies in general.  I expect them to be subject to random attacks in the future.  Today as people gain popularity and money they become subject to similar things.  It could be a women claiming John is her child's father.  They could force him to appear in a known location or get DNA off him with this. It could be nuisance lawsuits.  Or it could be someone wanting to impress someone else or make a name for themselves.  Ronald Reagan was shot in an attempt to impress an actress; crazy people will act crazy. So even if most of these are not real threats in of themselves together and coordinated they can cause real harm.

Brad D

Calara's DNA changed again.  Did she get a third helix?  She was with them the second longest.  Looks like she leveled up. What new abilities would help Calara?  Precognition?  Predicting multiple actions and seeing likelihoods?  Seeing / predicting motives behind others actions?

Paladin

Calara 's possible DNA change would be an interesting plot twist. Perhaps John is pumping all the girls up to progenitor level as he did with Alyssa. The collective power would be awesome. Another little twist that may not have been intentional was the fear after the mention of the action against the Armored Cobras. It was basically just a search and destroy operation, that should not put fear in the Admirals. Yes there was a kick-ass fleet action, Jade shot down 12 Rapier fighters and took out 11 tanks, the team did a pretty good job on the base. It got me thinking, then I remembered PJ took over for a bit and went into the barracks and took out the guard towers. There was that thing where the guy they captured puked after seeing the carnage in the barracks and then remarked that he didn't want to die like that. They threw him in one of the cells that they got the kidnapped victims from so he may have been the only survivor of the base. What did PJ do in the barracks? Spell out "fuck with me you die" in body parts or better yet, intestines. Did he hack all the tower guards up? I can imagine the Admirals, with their interest in John, getting a full report after the TF forces mopped it up with officers reporting the carnage in the barracks and then backed up by the survivor's interrogation. I bet that the sole survivor pisses himself at the mention of John's name. It is one thing to use a missile or even shoot someone, but when you use a sword, knife, or your bare hands that is a up-close and personal encounter.

Grimlakin

Evan, don't forget we have learned time and time again that John is some kind of rogue creation or rogue agent compared to every other advanced progenitor. John is the first we've come.across that fully. Empowers his crew. Even to the extent of actually making them progenitor s. As of yet there is no evidence that this other has ever done that. Further there is no evidence he's even considered that. Also note that there is another big bad in the psychic world that may have a hate on for all progenitors. We don't know if it's just John or not. Could make an interesting twist to say progenitor s are actually the caretakers of the old ones here to keep them locked away for eternity. Then does John dare kill one of them on the chance of the horrors that might be unleashed?

PLRus--Founding member of the TSM F5 club.

Another thought: What if, when they return for the interview with TFNN and the Admiralty and the parades...they come with a Maliri battlegroup as an escort to Irilith Valaden, who is the daughter next in line to rule house Valaden? As such a political figure, she is entitled to her retenue when visiting a foriegn power, no? Oh, and I almost forgot, she is a valued member of my crew. ;-)

PLRus--Founding member of the TSM F5 club.

Asking for suggestions for the title to 70 (no Tefler didn't ask) I am thinking "The rise of the Phoenix". Speaking both of Sakura's coming of age and Dana's upcoming reset.

Evan

What technology - if any - will John & his crew share with the Maliri Regency (and again, who is the Regency for and who will end their 'caretaker' status and thus, the Regency? John?)? What technology - if any - will John & his crew share with the Terran Federation? Tefler has had them talk about (and actually share) some technologies, already. Rachel's cures are the most recent, but what about the Air Purification system Dana came up with that they talked about marketing and donating the proceeds for? True, there hasn't been much time for that, yet... but... why not put it on the table to let people know that it's coming? Or has that been already done, yet? Other possibilities...?

Grimlakin

If people at large in the Terran federation understood that John and many of his crew are psychic that the federations leadership would consider him vastly different. He would be a huge liability with his relationship with the press and the people.

xd

Damn I started reading comments on Lit and some of the ideas there are pretty cool. One downside is potential spoiler alerts :(

Donovan

possible idea for the invictus, when they get back to the shipyard in Malari space and doing the upgrades. there are plenty of stories where a ship is split top to bottom, to increase the length. increase the number of hard points, increase the length, increase the cargo, increase... yea. you get the idea. it could be possible to increase the length by 100m-200m, add more retro thrusters, possibly increase the size of 2 of the main engines, and not loose much with max speed or max maneuverability. and with alyssa's ability to manipulate the metal physhically, you wouldn't have to worry about structural instability. as a matter of fact the structure's strength could be increased significantly. as well as the weight of the ship probably wouldn't increase too much if they used another material. the biggest impact this would have is the ability to mount almost the full cannon length for the singularity drivers. upgraded of course. it would also possibly allow for more hard points to be added for weapons, so heavy cannons/gauss cannons could be added, while maintaining the energy compliment of the ship. and, my cat has sharp claws (OUCH!) (he just jumped into my lap and missed.) also means they could use potentially larger shield generators, so the energy defense would be improved along with the size of the target.  could put a couple of modular mounts, so the other races weapons could be tested. fusion, plasma, tetryon, ...whatever... give them the chance to fully experiment with battleship/battle cruiser sized weapons. or even mounting a miniaturized star lance on a turreted hard point... talk about OP.

Donovan

a way that faye could get a body, if they were to visit the ashanath and get the basics of their telepathic computer. Dana and Rachael could research a way to create a biological component for telepathy. then potentially grow faye a host body, rather gestate faye a body, the telepathy being limited to the computer connection... but it's own personality that's in constant contact with the host server for a shared experience.

Evan

Tefler? Is this the final Chapter 69, or have you not yet posted that? I can't tell from the title. Also, were there any changes from what you had previously posted?
