This is mostly just going to be me blabbing on for ages about nothing terribly important, so if you don't care the tl;dr is not much but I'll try to get back to making stuff now. ---You might have noticed that aside from the monthly Patreon based painting/animation, I've been a little quiet for the last little while. As my supporters I feel like y'all deserve to know what I've been up to. As usual, I have no idea how to just fucking stop so a long period of silence is a good indication I've been working on something that's taking a while- unfortunately, it doesn't always mean I'm working on somethings successfully. I can get a little hyper focused on ideas sometimes and it can make it just about impossible to think about anything else. The latest culprit that I've been obsessing about is trying to find some way of making mesh based, stylized fur work well and look good. Currently I use particle based fur; if you don't know what that means it doesn't really matter, but the basic idea is that you actually render a bajillion little hairs just like real fur and that's what gives you the fluffy look. This can look pretty good, but it also causes a ton of limitations and problems that something more stylized like mesh-based fur (where the fur is literally built into the mesh of the character, like the way videogames do it typically) wouldn't have to deal with. I feel like it were done just right there's a lot of potential for mesh-based fur to look amazing, I can see it in my head, I've just... uh, never seen it done that well for real. It's so, so, so much harder to do mesh based fur well that I'm not sure I've ever seen an example I like. But I guess some little part of my brain thought hey, maybe I'm special, maybe I can make something work that nobody else has figured out yet. Turns out no, I am not special and I can not figure it out, lol. I sadly don't have much to show for all the time I've spent plucking away at it, most of the time my efforts resulted in going so nowhere so hard that I just didn't even get far enough to have anything to save. I seriously spent like two weeks just trying to find any technique for sculpting fur that I didn't absolutely hate and not making any headwind. However, after a lot of looking at references and experimenting around, I did get one example where I kinda thought, at least for a first attempt it might be worth trying to turn it into a thing to see how it looks finished, but I made it this far before throwing in the towel:

What are we looking at here? This is the retopology of a sculpt. Sculpting is a process that makes it relatively easy to get a mesh into whatever shape you want, but the underlying structure, the topology that sculpting creates, is a disaster.

All those little dots and lines, those are the topology of the mesh, and you simply cannot work with that. It has to be retopologized into something with the same shape but much more reasonable topology, and that's what we're seeing in the first picture. And y'know, I don't actually hate it, I think with some more practice it maybe could look pretty good, but I simply did not want to continue. It took me like two days of work to retopologize all those little tufts of fur, and that's just the face- I saw all the fur of the neck upcoming and just kinda... nope. Nope this is not tenable. Trying to do things this way would make every model I make take like a month or two to make. And it's not just the retopology, it's going to make every step of the process- unwrapping, texture painting, rigging (oh god the rigging) take so much longer... I just can't. And even if I could, there are parts of the body I have no idea how to make look good in this style. The shoulders for example, I don't think would look very good even retopologized, and yet I don't think they can just be left bare either. So, I dunno. Someone better than me could maybe pull it off but I don't think I can. The retopology was proving unreasonable, so I next thought about maybe doing it the other way around. Starting with a completed model and just kinda extruding some fur out of the existing mesh. This has the benefit of being massively faster, and not requiring me to remake all my existing models from the ground up. The downside is I have way less control over what I can do with the fur, and as a result can't make it look as good.

And yeah, I'm just not feeling it. With some better texture painting and other effects on top of it it could maybe look kinda okay, but I'm just not feeling it. I'm clearly spinning my wheels and getting nowhere, so I really need to set this to bed for now. That's honestly half of why I'm making this post- partially I feel y'all deserve to know what I'm doing, but partially because I think by officially making a post about it and calling it quits it'll help me snap out of my autistic hyperfixation and get back to actually doing something useful. SO. All that is a very long way of me saying, for the last little while I've been fucking around in blender trying to find a nice looking new style to play with, but I failed miserably and don't have anything to show for it. That's okay, failing is part of the process and maybe someday I'll work something out, but for now I just need to get back to doing productive things so I'm moving on. So with that in mind, who wants to see Vivian cream her cage again? It's been a while and I'm in a mood. That's the plan for tomorrow. :P

Creaming a cage is a good way to make up for the drain that is the art process... I do understand the banging your head against the wall though, I too am taking a break from art to try and figure out my process more and learning to really enjoy it more :))

Ruaidri

I agree. I'm tired of draining my own mental energy so I'ma drain Viv instead. This seems like a much better use of my time! In my case this is less fun at this point, and more... obsessive compulsive maybe? This post is my equivalent to someone telling everyone that they're quitting smoking so they'll be held accountable because they can't manage to just do it on their own, haha.

Kassler

No I completely understand what you mean. I’ve been stuck in a rut of drawing myself. It’s not that I’m not improving, I very well am, I’m just finding it draining, I haven’t really found how drawing makes me happy yet. More like I was doing it because I felt like I needed to get good rather than enjoying the process.

Ruaidri

Maybe we both just need a damn break. I'll let you know if I ever figure out how to stop. x3

Kassler

Just make sure you're still taking care of yourself <33 (I do need a break too Dxxx)

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's understandable to want to feel productive. Documenting failed attempts is really good work though, a lot of people don't know to do that~ Also, you're an incredible artist in the furry world that posts for free. You've also been keeping up regular content so I don't think anyone is complaining~ It's amazing that you default back to awesome furry smut in order to recover from burn-out lol. What a time to be alive~

Awww, thank you for the kind words! I just like to keep the folks here updated. They support me to help me make things, so I wanted to show everyone that I've at least been trying, even if it didn't end up going anywhere this time. :P But yes, I'm looking forward to setting this aside and getting back to some fun easy drawing I think!

BobPBX

Gotta admit, I've never had a hyper-fixation I can fully break free of, especially if my intuition is telling me it can be done. If I were to guess, you'll come back to this with a clever solution after sleeping on it for a few days... or a year. Just try your best to break free for now! Regardless, I hope you learned something other than defeat during the process, and I think we can all say that we're eager to see Viv cage creaming ;)

Cats n' Cameras

Hey , you gotta try new things. Just cause this one didn’t work out doesn’t mean the next won’t. Love your work. Here for the long haul. Thanks for a ton of entertaining and enjoyable art!

Juan Valdez

Thank you for your effort, even if it doesn't always pan out the way you intended! For what it's worth, I still think your animations are, by a wide margin, still the best animated porn I've ever seen! You have an amazing command of expressions and movement, and it's always inspiring to me, seeing what you come out with. And yes, I think I can speak for everybody when I say we're all eager to see more of Vivian!

Nhiel

i love the look of your current fur. but if you dont try new stuff.. you never grow. so yay for trying stuff out? <3

Max Homing Fox

I think if you are limited by what you can create and branch off to something that still looks good and gives you an advantage in art/animation that's a win in the books your animations are so good

Alright, I've been pretty inactive on patreon for a bit (honestly just happy to throw money at you so you keep doing what you do), but you got me to logon. So here's the thing. I LOVE it when you experiment. Not only do some of your more interesting ideas come out of experimenting, but we also tend to get really unique art or projects out of it. That being said, I do understand the "I can just figure this out if I had 10 more minutes of the right autistic juice in my brain" deal. I spent 5 weeks trying to figure out a UI element in Unreal, to make it so that when multiple players are selecting characters at the same time, that Unreal would record who selected what, and that way you could load in your characters. Turns out, there isn't a way to stop the UI from consuming the input and letting you record which player controller did the action at the same time. You can do one, or you can do the other, and it is pain incarnate. Keep doing what you do Ru. Maybe come back to this idea down the road. Maybe someone, somewhere, will make a tool that helps shortcut all the little hair rigging and all that. Or maybe someone will see you had this problem and make it specifically for you. In the meantime, just know that it's alright to struggle at something, it's how you learn and grow.

Ruaidri

Aw, well thank you! Both for the support and for brushing the dust off to come let me know your thoughts! :P Yeah, it can definitely be difficult to turn off the gas when your head is really spinning with ideas... I can even relate to that specific example somewhat, I've lost very large chunks of time to gamedev myself, just trying to get some stupid thing to work how I want. Grr. I'll definitely be coming back to this idea, for sure. I still have ideas! Just... gotta get some actual work done for a while first, hah! But this is not the last we've seen of this idea, I'm sure of it.

Ruaidri

Hey, thanks! Yeah, I agree- the tricky part is just finding that other something to branch off into. Going to take some more work I think!

Ruaidri

This same drive is what got me to learn 3D in the first place, so yeah, I'd say that's a yay for trying stuff out overall. :P Thanks!

Ruaidri

It's not easy, for sure... that's why I'm using this post to help me shift gears. I said I was gonna draw some cage creaming so now I -have- to! :P

Ruaidri

Hey, thanks! That's very kind. :3 Yeah, even though it didn't exactly work out yet, I still learned some stuff along the way, and already have ideas for next time!

Ruaidri

Aww, thank you! As always, I just do my best to make fun stuff for everyone and so I'm thrilled to hear that they're being enjoyed. :P

j-r

Damn, this is really why I stopped drawing completely. My drive was always to get better so I could eventually draw/animate for video games or movies as a career. That didn't pan out, and then there was no more drive, even though I still love it. It just takes so much time and effort, and now my only drive would be to draw furry porn because that's a lot of fun lol. Buuuuuut, I can't do that because I have a family and that's just weird lol.

Kassler

As someone who still lives with family, I never found it too weird personally. You do you ofc, but I find that just having some privacy does wonders to ease that kind of anxiety :)

I feel like you’re being too strict with yourself. You‘ve been creating beautiful stuff. When I think of quality yiff, your creations are some of the first that come to mind. If you struggle with using a 3D modeling technique, I would struggle ten –No! thousand-fold doing the same. But I can get that perfectionism. I got that in me too. What helps me the most with not straying too far from realistic expectations, is getting regular feedback on my work, not just the finished project. There‘s this thing, like creator syndrome or something: No matter how good you make something, as its creator you‘ll always find a way to make it look bad, because you know exactly all the little „flaws“ it has. Meanwhile most others don’t even begin to notice. They just see all the beauty you‘ve created. Anyways, maybe you could start sharing WIPs of your work ^^ Doesn’t need to be here, could also just be showing a friend what you’re working on. Getting regular external feedback helps me incredibly with managing my expectations and not loosing myself too much in barely noticeable details. Whatever you do, I‘ll just be patiently be looking forward to what you create next ^^
