I've been a lil' quiet lately, which as per usual means I'm working on stuff in the background. As my supporters I figured it was about time I gave a lil' update to you all! TL:DR; Skip to the bottom for wolf lady (all the way to the bottom. There's an ugly wolf lady in the middle somewhere)

I've been tinkering around with more NPR stuff (if you're not familiar with NPR rendering, think... more stylized, basically) in blender, mostly. I have a comic rolling around in my head, and I'd kind of like to make it into a reality but a: I don't wanna draw it manually, any future comics from me are probably going to be blender'd, and b: my typical model style just doesn't work well for comics. Just kinda looks bad in comic form. So, I've been messing around with stuff to see if I can get a style that would work a little bit better for that format. I spent some time experimenting with mesh-based methods of rendering fur. My typical method uses particle based fur, and while this can look nice, it's a pain in the ass to work with in every way. It makes rendering slow, it causes lots of clipping problems, it just sucks a lot. Unfortunately, the alternative is somehow worse lol. After a lot of experimenting and struggling to find a method of making mesh-based fur in a stylized fashion that I both didn't hate and wouldn't want to off myself having to make and rig, this was the best I could come up with.

Now, this is a very early WIP experimental stage so it's never going to look amazing, but even accounting for that, it just... doesn't look great. The biggest issue is that you can't easily put fur in all the places you need it in this method without it causing more problems than it solves. The mesh-based fur "spikes" look really unappealing from off-angles so the best solution is to just leave most of the body fur-less, but then it looks weird only having fur tufts in a few areas. On top of all that, it would be an absolute nightmare to rig properly. So after much, much experimenting and time spent, I threw in the towel and started experimenting with my usual fur methods. I'll spare the details for they are many and boring, but after much experimenting with shader stuff, rigging stuff, and even throwing in some compositor magic, I was able to come up with this:

And if I may say so: I think I'm kinda cookin' with this. Most of the style isn't miles different from my usual work, but it's cleaned up just enough to I think work decently in a comic format, and the face is where the real magic happened. I found some sneaky ways to add linework on top of the fur in-model so I don't have to rely on adding it in manually or using unreliable post processing methods, they're literally a rigged part of the model so I can animate them just like any other part. And it adds SO much expressiveness to the facial expressions. I used a similar trick for the eyebrows to keep them nice and sharp, and paired with some other rigging shenanigans to give me more control over the face shape... suffice it to say, I think I'm on to something here that could actually work in comic form. Also, hot wolf lady! Always fun. There's still much, much more to do, both on this model and on the other models I'd need to make the comic in my head... this is a marathon project and there's still no guarantee it'll make to completion. But I'm very excited about this initial experiment! And, worse case scenario, I have a model I can use as an updated version of Aurora. I've never been quite satisfied with her model, and with a bit of repainting this should make a very nice improvement for her. Lucky Jessie's getting an upgrade, lol. Anyway, that's what I've been up to. Do lemme know your thoughts!

Hmmmmm…. Wondering if this means that 3D models with long hair may be a possibility in the future? 👉👈 Asking for a friend…

AviatorDH

Fun fact: I was literally writing a comment about how much I love the fluff and how it adds a lot of expression to the model when I then saw you made that exact comment in the post. lol

Ruaidri

No, I unfortunately still haven't cracked that nut. Maaaaybe in a model that's only planned to be used in comic form? When it only has to be posed and doesn't actually have to move realistically, that might be doable. But for animations, no idea. It's an extremely difficult problem to solve. However, the blender devs are actively working on hair simulation stuff with the goal of making it easier to work with, so there may yet be a light at the end of this tunnel. :P

Kassler

Daw rats Well either way blender devs seem pretty hopeful about it. Might have to throw some money at you some day should that ever work itself out xD

Ruaidri

Just can't live without the fluff. It adds too much, even if it is a massive pain in my butt. x3

Bloudin Ruo

She's come out SO, so fun! The style is great and unique and immediately communicates the aesthetic of the character. She's got an awesome feel to the design, fur, shape and everything, and feels like a great next-gen/upgrade of Aurora! Wonderful work, Ru!

Ruaidri

Thaaanks! I am quite pleased. I put a lot of time into trying to improve the expressiveness of the character and rigging and I think it's paid off. Will have to wait until I actually try to make something comicy with her to really tell, but it's a solid start anyway I think!

NaturallyChimera

I love the expression and personality that she's projecting and the model looks absolutely gorgeous! Hoping to get to see more of her as this process develops or you use her for more experiments!

FrFoxy

It looks really good, looking forward to whatever comic comes from this.

Overcast

A fascinating read and a very lovely lady. I always love when you nerd talk about things I don't understand. :3 I'm very excited to see you continue to refine this process. I'm VERY EXCITED for a Ru comic. I'd sell...shit, I dunno, cage time, for more info. 🥺

Roarschach

I like the look! I also like the idea of models that are.. tactically fluffy? Where there are a lot of regions that are nearly smooth, and only a few regions that are shaggy. Sometimes less is more, even with fur

Lagos

Goddamn that looks so cool. The face does look drawn on.

Ruaidri

Thanks! :3 The only problem with tactically fluffy is that, at least in my opinion, there's no single set of places you can put fluff that looks good from every camera angle. Typically speaking you want the fluff to be most visible around the silhouette of the character, this is what you typically see in more cartoony/stylized 2D as well, and the only sure-fire way to guarantee the fur is always on the silhouette is to just have fur everywhere, lol. I do try to approach tactically-fluffy though, by adjusting the length and clumpiness of the fur in various areas, and I think that helps a bit!

Ruaidri

Thanks! It does kinda have a draw-over vibe, which.... I don't hate, tbh. It kinda works for what I'm imagining!

Ruaidri

How much cage time we talkin'? >:3

Pojodan

Well, with a face like that, I can't imagine anything but tremendously marvelous times ahead. Hopefully she likes cheetahs :9

Lagos

Yeah it looks 2D in the right places while still having texture on other angles. By particle fur do you mean your geonodes curves approach or actual particle systems?

pentafan

Looking good! What is said comic gonna be about?

Horseguy

looking forward! Can't wait she needs the knot :3

Cupcake Crusader

She looks great, can't wait to see her in action! Would love to see her a little more full figured but I know that's not your type.

Overcast

Start the bidding, my friend! What do you think is fair for a peak behind the scenes?

Shiro Sama

Are there any new fun facts about this this wolf lady or its just random wolf lady #1 ??

Cascadian

Give yourself more credit.

Ruaidri

Currently just random wolf lady, but more will be revealed as I work on her!

Ruaidri

The geonodes curves approach, but that's similar enough to the actual particle system based fur that I sometimes use the terms interchangeably. I think "particle system" is a bit more commonly understood than "curves" when speaking to non-blenderers. :P

Shiro Sama

Could you draw her in a way she likes sea food ? Like prawns and shrimps?

Ruaidri

What I want to say is something like lock up for a month and I'll tell you more about it at the end of it, but I'm concerned what I'm planning will be a lot more obvious by then so it won't be worth it. But you could do it anyway just for the kicks of it. :P

Ruaidri

Stay tuned! Don't want to get hopes up too high in case it never ends up materializing, so I'm gonna not say too many details just yet.

dadrobit

Hey, Just wanted to say thank you for your tutorial work! Studying them and the models you sold a while back have absolutely been stellar for improving my own efforts. The rigging tutorial especially is mindbogglingly insightful stuff!

Ruaidri

I'm sensing that you wish to see some more Ash. :P I have comic ideas for him too so hopefully we'll see him pop up in some form at some point in the not too distant future...

Ruaidri

Oh excellent, I'm super happy to hear they've been helpful! That's awesome, thank you! :3

T987-A5256-B85-ZRR

Maybe... What's the tell? :P Seriously though, her design just seems primely complimentary to his. I think that the best matches for her would probably be Ash, Runolfur and BFCT, in that order. But, who I do personally enjoy seeing the most of, happens to be Adhina, Ash, Isaac, and Kyle. But all of your stuff, across the board, is absolutely amazing!

dadrobit

Any chance there are gonna be more in the future? Totally understand if not, they clearly take a ton of time.

Ruaidri

That's a very specific request, I'm very curious what brings that on? :P

Ruaidri

I don't have any immediate plans, but I do have some ideas for things I wouldn't mind showing more folk how to do. So no promises, but maybe probably maybe? :P

dadrobit

All good! I definitely probably maybe look forward to anything that might happen! :D

Shiro Sama

Well nothing extra . I just thought that it would be nice to see wolf girl eat shrimps . Normaly wolfs dont eat them.

Frigate Ace

I'd love to see a tutorial for this once you figure it out! I know I'm curious about "how the soup is made", and I'm sure others are too.

Ruaidri

If I ever figure out something I actually like, you can be almost certain I'll probably at least blab about it a bunch, if not a formal tutorial! Though so far I'm still strugglin', hah.
