Skip to the TL;DR below if you don't feel like reading.I've been thinking about this for a while, and after seeing the "do whatever you want" option win the monthly vote twice in a row, I'm taking that as a sign that it might be time to jump on it and shake things up here a bit. I haven't been super satisfied with the way my Patreon is set up for quite some time now. I have had multiple people on multiple occasions tell me about how it kinda sucks putting forth suggestions only to see them not get voted for. A few people have even been quite negatively mentally affected by it. This is literally the opposite of the effect I want my presence on the internet to have, so it hasn't sat well with me for some time, but I've never quite had an idea for what to do about it that worked for me either. But it's also more than that... I've had this place for many years at this point and in all that time, to my recollection, I've never once skipped out on a monthly painting (nor animation, though they didn't start 'till a little later on if I remember right). Even when I had surgery I still got that month's work done. And to be honest, I'm gettin' kinda tired, lol. It's not the workload, setting aside a few days a month to get them done isn't at all unreasonable, it's more the interruption. I am a creature that is fueled by ADHD; if I'm working with it I can spend hours and hours working on a project and barely notice it, I frequently put in 14 hour days when I'm letting inspiration take the wheel where it wants to go, but if I'm trying to fight against it it's like pulling teeth trying to work at all. I've lost entire days struggling to pull myself away from what I want to be working on so I can get started on the monthly patreon stuff I should be doing, only resulting in me not getting anything done on either. Don't get me wrong, I haven't been hating it- some very cool ideas have come as a result of these, some of them have resulted in some of my best work or pushed me in ways I might not have otherwise, which is neat. But they're starting to grind away at me a bit now, and pair that with the negative effect they have on the people making the suggestions, and it makes me feel like they should go. So, I think that's what I'm gonna do!TL;DR: We'll go through one more month to give everyone time to react however they're going to react, and then that'll be the end of the monthly suggestions/voting/painting/animation. So, what am I gonna do in their place? Well... I think I'd like to try just feeding the ADHD monster for a while. No specific schedule or anything, I'm just gonna work on stuff. Wherever my brain wants to take me at the time. If you like the stuff and feel I'm putting out enough stuff to continue being worthy of your support then it will of course be highly appreciated (and of course my 6 dollar tier will continue to offer high-res content whenever possible!), but I understand that I'm changing the way things work around here pretty dramatically so if you wanna dip you have my blessing, not that I could or would stop you anyway... To give you some idea what I've been feeding the ADHD monster lately, I'm still working on wolf woman! Her outfit may also give you some clues as to what I'm thinking of doing with her...

She has been eating a tremendous amount of my time lately. It's not just simply making a model which is time consuming enough, but I'm also trying to come up with a rendering style that I feel will be enjoyable in comic form which is proving quite difficult. I don't think it needs to look 2D exactly, but fully 3D looking comics just don't work well for me for some reason, so it's got to at least have a 2D "flavor" about it which is what I'm trying to capture. Also trying to design an outfit that fits all the limitations I have for the setting, while also being something I can feasibly rig (rigging clothing is kind of a nightmare), it's been tricky tricky tricky. But I do think I'm headed in a good direction here. Clothes still need some work... still fiddling with the exact style... something about the spear head kinda bugs me, like it's a little too detailed maybe? Fingers kinda disappear into a blob but I can fix that with a bit of a gradient on the fingers I think. But overall I could see this style looking alright for a comic, right? What you y'all think? I have other comic ideas too. I've got at least two involving Rasa that have been bouncing around my head for years, one of which being the origin story. Maybe we could go back and see how Blue and Gale met! A comic would also be the perfect medium for the two of them to finally get married which know a few of you have been pestering me about lol. The museum's definitely got a few stories to tell...It's not just comics though, I have lots of ideas floating around that seem like prime fodder for the ADHD monster. I'd love to build more high-quality sets so my characters have more cool places to hang out in animations, kinda like I did for Isaac's bar (The museum? Cinnamon's Bakery? Blue and Gale's apartment?). Got a few tutorials in mind that might like to see the light of day. Wanna start experimenting with voice acting in animations more, start making my characters a bit more alive. I have SO many more characters floating around in my head that want to exist , and some that exist that still need models (lookin' at you marten girl). Will all that happen? I dunno, that's up to the ADHD monster, but even if it's not that specific stuff I guarantee you it's gonna be eating something, so stick around if you wanna help me keep feeding it and see what it chooses next. :P

Cool! Looking forward to what's to come ^^

wildtamaskan

This works for me imo. Id rather see you work on what you're passionate about and im curious to see what you'll come up with :D

Taki Kuroi

I've always preferred when Patreon works like old school patronage. You put money in and the artist, with their monetary concerns at least lessened, produces more art. Maybe it's what you expected, maybe it's something baffling. It's cool no matter what.

Kassler

OH MY GOD PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BLUE AND GALE ORIGIN STORYYYYY A bit of a writer myself, so I have headcannoned a little origin story myself hehehe, they’re just too cute together! AND VOICE ACTING TOO OMG HOW EXCITING ^^

TacticalATKGoose

in my own personal experience, simply doing *stuff* is the most efficient way for doing creative things when you have ADHD, doubly so when you don't want to burn yourself out on things you love

Daddy Bearcat

Works for me. I think it's fairly clear when an artist truly cares about their subject matter and has fun with it. Go nuts!

Ruaidri

Maybe I'm a bit biased as the artist in question, but it's hard to argue with the simplicity of that setup. "I like what you do; here, have some money so you can do more". Even I don't know exactly what's gonna happen but I hope it'll be interesting at least!

Ruaidri

Fighting it is so hard. I just wanna go with the flow for a bit and see if I make cooler stuff that way! :P

Ruaidri

Yeah I had a feeling that one would intrigue you. :P

Ratatosky

I don't mind switching to more of whatever you wanna make :3 The spear might feel off because it looks like the blade is resting on the end of the shaft, instead of seated in a notch on the like stone blades usually are. Also, I dont think stone spear tips were usually much wider than the shaft, so the whole joint area could be tightly wrapped and reinforced with cord or leather. In general its proportions and design seem more in line with a medieval era spear, especially with the butt spike/counterweight. It still looks cool tho. Kinda has an rpg mid game weapon vibe to it :p

Kassler

I would happily audition to be a Ru voice actor xP Where’s the harm in giving it the ol’ college try hehe

Rusovich

You know what I think? Go for it! What I most enjoy about your art it's that you put passion behind everything you do, and I want to see what fueling the ADHD monster with pure passion would look like!

Overcast

Unleashing the ADHD monster? This is gonna be *good.*

Un

You're very sweet to be so concerned about those distressed by the polls. As an unwilling host to a pretty bad case of ADHD, I sympathize, man. I'm no artist, but in other things, it starts out hard enough to get into a flow, but then the hyperfocus locks in hard, and it's maddening to put it down or get pulled out. Even leaving the ADHD monster out of the equation, it's a good thing, focusing on the projects that drive and excite you. Will I miss the patron submissions? Sure, a little. Compared to your well-being and getting to pursue your passions, however, it's of infinitesimal significance. I also get to look forward to the other cool stuff you'll be doing. I'll have to join the pile-on if you ever put out a call for VAs. You might even have my reel from a previous one lurking in a digital junk drawer somewhere. XD

Cupcake Crusader

I'm gonna have to go ahead and agree with the other comments on this one. I've been enjoying your art for 18 goddamn years, so yeah, fuck it. Do whatever. Follow the faeries. If the guilt starts bothering you, you can always throw out a poll for suggestions/ideas and add it to the in progress pile with the understanding that it will be done when the ADHD allows it. But you're just going to have to accept that fact that we're here because we enjoy your art and want to support you.

As someone who's been here for a while, I'm really happy you are not only noticing the opportunity for a change, but also that you're not afraid of it! I know of many creators who get stuck in their benefits, and become fearful of change - Even when they need to do so for their own health and growth. It's not an easy thing, and I'm proud of you for stepping up and doing it! The monthly art/animations have been an amazing tool and benefit for you and for us over the years; so much has come from them and you've grown so much by making them every month! Your dedication to getting them done is nothing short of admirable, and you're closing this chapter of your work with pride. Nothing stays the same forever, and both our interests and our careers change. Recognizing that and moving with it rather than fighting against it is exactly what needs to happen--Just like how you said things are with your motivation! I'm honestly looking forward to what your unbound creativity comes up with, and I enthusiastically welcome this new chapter of your work! As for wolf woman, she's looking amazing! I think she's definitely going in the right direction for comic work. Interesting how trying to get a pleasing 'non-3D' look is hard, even though visually things are simpler, eh? I think it's the same balance media like the Borderlands games did very well, but it's a style that has to sit on a very fine line. I'm confident you're going to nail it though, and remember that your worst critic is yourself! Finally, I'm super excited to see what comic ideas you bring forward! Lots of scenery and worldbuilding, lots of character exposition, lots of backstories and unique ideas. I'm always partial to seeing more of Rasa, so I'm extra extra excited for that! Thanks so much for doing all you've done over the years Ru, I've been grateful to be here to see it and be a part of it. I look forward to wherever the road takes you, and I'll be here for it!

R Bay C

I think this is great! Honestly I think most people (including me) aren't here for the polls and are just here because we love your work and want to support it. If the polls are making it harder rather than easier to do the work then definitely get rid of 'em

Lone Wolf Survivor

Rather your ideas than to hit a wall. You haven't hit burnout yet, so rather hear your ideas than the charred remains of my own mind. In other words. Looking forward to YOUR ideas, not Our ideas.

KeeWolf / Dharu 💜

Yes, please work on the stuff you‘re passionate about! ^^ I know the feeling of trying to do something, your ADHD doesn’t want to. Can be soooooo stressful. So please, you’re an incredibly skilled and creative artisr. Whatever you produce, I think it will be worth my money :)

Harry_Hirsch

I feel like people complaining that their suggestions don't get voted on kinda fail to realize that you have a fairly large audience and while they might be totally into their idea, it might not be it for everyone and since it's a majority vote, their suggestions will fall short all the time. I have voted "do what you like" every time there is a chance, because to be frank: while your style and drawings are always hot, the 5th image in a row of a caged girly furry being chucked while their friend gets railed by a feral dragon etc. gets a bit stale. It might tickle the majority of patrons and the majority wants it, but idk. And you have in my opinion always found a good mix to give everyone a bit of everything, so I am kinda looking forward to you being unleashed. And while you can do your thing, every one in a while you can throw out a poll or two if you feel like it or if you lack imagination of what to draw next.

Growlph Ibex

This sounds like a healthy change! I look forward to seeing you get more time to follow your passion. The monthly suggestion/vote format was fun, but my votes never seemed to line up with the crowd's, so I've just been stepping back and enjoying the show anyway.

Jykinturah

I don’t mind putting money in for the ADHD monster. For this Patreon I see it as me providing passive support cause I generally like what you make. For a more specific idea I’d probably just float the idea to you and see if you are interested, and pay you directly for the work.

Icefox

I think you should do what makes you happy and satisfied with what you're doing. I personally hope that includes more Failed Hunt now and then, but I'm happy to support whatever you decide you want to make.

Ruaidri

First of all, thank you that's super kind! :3 Secondly, I think you're potentially going to be very excited for what I have planned with the wolf lady. :P

Ruaidri

I think that's a common story, a lot of people tried a few times and then just stopped bothering. Probably a sign it's time to ditch it either way! Hopefully the stuff that falls out of my own brain is still interesting to people.

Ruaidri

Not gonna lie I'm a little nervous, patreon has become a not insignificant fraction of my income so messing around with it is always a lil' scary, but hopefully people like the things I do henceforth enough to stick around. The comments are certainly encouraging. :P Comics are interesting to me because there are things they can do better than still pictures or animations... they have an interesting niche that I'd like to explore, but I just hate drawing them manually so so much, so hopefully I can put together a blender style that works for them. I do think I'm heading in a decent direction, time will tell I suppose! Thanks for stickin' around all this time! Hopefully the things I make going forward continue to be enjoyable for you!

Ruaidri

I dunno if I'll go back to doing strict polls like before, but I could definitely see tossing up posts just looking for general conversation or opinions from the folks here, because there are definitely no shortage of creative folk with interesting ideas around here to help me come up with neat stuff!

laserpointer4

I'll be honest I didn't like voting I can never remember anyones names and looking up people was really hard. down with voting up with cool stuff

Abys5

I would LOVE to see some new tutorials and all the stuff that the monster is hiding

Bloudin Ruo

There might be some blending of come'ers and go'ers as things settle down--You'll be offering new things to attract new patrons, but also I'm sure some people are here primarily because of the suggestions/votes. But I think overall you're certainly going in the right direction by moving on from something that has served its purpose, and is now a drag on your time and creativity. I think your efforts on finding a way to do comics better and faster and with more enjoyment for you is a real worthwhile endeavor! The medium can explore so much and, like you said, tell a story in a different way than an animation or a single piece. I'm all for it, and I think the best thing to do is to just give it a whirl--Even if it isn't perfect right now. Start making progress by learning on a topic/idea you're interested in! We're all rooting for ya, Ru. And we want you to enjoy what you're doing here, too!

Asp & EDEN

I also struggle with the ADHD monster. Some of my best creations have happened in a fever rush right before an event on a whim. Some of my worst work was paid for up front causing me to struggle through it just to get it done. Honestly, I only vote in your polls when there's something that really draws my attention. Otherwise I let things just happen or pick the 'you choose' option because I joined to support, not to control. I'm not going to miss the polls, but if you really want them, maybe change them to a narrower decision like... Does this look better red or blue? The polls should help you, not control you.

MiloMesmer

Love the idea of your moreso following your gut and your pen for what you wanna do! I initially joined for the Rasa/hypnolizard content, but you have *SO* many good characters and ideas that I'm never disappointed or let down by what you've been putting out, past, present, and *absolutely* into the future. Hope that this change is mentally freeing for you~

Ruaidri

D'aww, well thank yas! That's super kind and I'm very happy to hear you've been enjoying what I do. I definitely need to do some more Rasa soon, I've been feeling the urge lately and it's been a while. :P

MiloMesmer

I'll be excited for her, and anything else you'll have in the works. If you're happy with what you're putting out, I know myself and *so* many others will be too~

Thowan

This is something that I've been thinking about since you originally posted this, but is the patreon still going to be an open forum where we can toss ideas at you, and if they catch your fancy they might get ADHD'd into existance? I was never big on making the actual suggestions, but I enjoyed voting, but at the same time that was always one of things I liked about the patreon, being able to see some content that I preferred being made by my favorite artist. I totally understand going the route of "I'll work on what I want to" though at the same time, as my attention is frequently caught by whatever fancies me as well. Thought I'd pose the question none-the-less.

Ruaidri

I probably won't be holding official "suggestions" posts in the traditional form, but if I post a picture or something and it inspires an idea, those are always welcome in the comments! You never know what's going to inspire something from me, it's not rare at all that I do something from a comment just on a whim. :P

Thowan

That's fair! I just wanted to know what the general vibe was. I figured it was along the lines of "Oh I'll still take inspiration from you guys when it peaks my interest" kind of deal, but I also didn't want to assume either.
