Verstappen Beats Hamilton in F1’s Wild Down Under

Max Verstappen finally got his first Australian Grand Prix victory in the round three of the 2023 F1 World Championship, a race that saw three red flags, three restarts and three safety car periods caused mayhem.

Started poorly and dropped from pole to third in just three corners, Verstappen showed great patience before executing a 2.5-second quicker lap on the 12th tour to regain the lead from Lewis Hamilton, and never looked back.

The Dutchman has won two out of three races and is leading the championship by 15 points, as Red Bull remains undefeated.

Mercedes saw mixed results with George Russell retiring with an engine fire, the first non-finish of the Brackley team in 2023, but with Lewis Hamilton finishing runner-up, the factory’s best result to date.

Hamilton, who has complained that he feels disconnected with the car, told the track interview: “We are clearly down on straight [line] pace compared to the Red Bulls, for us to be up here fighting with Aston is just amazing at this point in the season.”

Fernando Alonso completed the top three with yet another sublime performance in his Aston Martin. The grid’s eldest driver made it three podiums out of three, and is enjoying his best start to a F1 season since 2006.

The 41-year-old Spaniard said post-race: “We had a rollercoaster of emotions today. I think Mercedes was very fast…

“I tried to force a mistake from Lewis all race long, tried to get close, but he drove fantastically well, as the champion he is, and no mistakes.”

The race was red-flagged three times despite minimal mistakes by the top three, with the true big chaos happened on lap 57 following the second standing restart, bringing out the last red flag.

On that second last lap, three separate clashes took place almost simultaneously at the Turn 1-2 complex in Melbourne as Logan Sargent took out Nyck de Vries altogether at the back, while at the front Carlos Sainz Jr. tapped his compatriot Fernando Alonso into a spin.

Seconds earlier, a front-locking and wide-running Pierre Gasly then came back to the tight midfield to collect his Alpine teammate Esteban Ocon so both were out.

An Alex Albon shunt on lap seven brought out the first red flag, and the second was caused by Kevin Magnussen’s Haas running wide out of Turn 2 to hit the wall on lap 54.

There was also a brief virtual safety car due to the engine fire on Russell’s W14 earlier on lap 18.

Powertrain rivals would pay attention to it, as this was the third straight engine-related DNF in three races across three different Mercedes-powered teams. The first was with McLaren in Bahrain, and the second with Aston in Saudi Arabia.

Sources have indicated the expired engine arrived back at base in Brixworth mid-week post-Melbourne, and that a full investigation will be carried out to identify the root cause to the failure.

F1 track actions resume in Azerbaijan at the end of April in three weeks’ time.
