The Vazier is close to the empress originally if I’m remembering correctly, so do the emperor and Wythela get close to the Vazier and her family (not just for the benefits) to keep the empress in check since the Vazier is pretty popular ?

It's honestly a matter of "This isn't personal, this is politics". Have to remember that unlike now, lots of people in power back then knew each other very well and were often even family/relatives through blood or marriage.
