Komamura's shikai works the same as his bankai except it only summons a single piece of the armor. So if he swings his arm with his sword, a giant phantom arm from the bankai form will appear and swing as well. He used his shikai against Aizen, though Aizen blocked it easily. It's said that Komamura strength is actually kinda nuts - he's usually able to OHKO most of his opponents with his bankai, so he's never actually needed to do much in fights. It's just unfortunate the first time we see him fight, he's fighting one of the most ridiculous captains in the series.

What doesn't make sense about Ikakku worrying about people hounding him to be captain is that there are 3 vacant spots since Aizen, Gin, and Kaname left. You would think they'd have more sense of urgency to fill a void of 3, but nobody is even asking the one lieutenant they are aware of who knows bankai to be captain, which is Renji.

Renji even asked Ikkaku to become a captain - I think Renji doesn't feel he's good enough yet, so he doesn't volunteer himself.
