I always wondered why Orihime didn’t protect him from the start and why she seemed so nervous when she did it because she already said she wasn’t scared of Ulquiorra and he stated he wouldn’t harm her, and I just recently realized it’s because she was nervous about how Ichigo would respond since she knew he wouldn’t want her to help him and she ended up being right since he told her to stand back instead of inviting her to help. Ironically she ended up being in more danger standing back than she would be if they fought together. Moral of the story is let her cook I guess (don't open replies spoiler inside)

The manga did a better job explaining her backstory, she and her older brother were abuse victims in their household, hence why they were on their own in the beginning. So her reactions to someone being bullied is very "biased" in a way.
