Sorenman1

I took it, that when he saw Orihime not being afraid of him and reached out to him; he felt a warm emotion for the first time.

Jay rellim

beautiful ending!! him saying "in the palm of my hand was the heart" is a call back to his earlier words that the heart isn't something that can be held in the palm of your hands or seen, and therefore isn't real. so now, Ulquiorra is saying that "The Heart", the bonds formed between people which give life meaning, is real.

If you guys want more ulquiorra, there's a short backstory that was never adapted in the anime, called unmasked, I'll post the link in case you wanna check it out. https://imgur.com/a/9F6bv

Also this is my reading of Ichigo's words (spoiler free ofc): I don’t think Ichigo is simply seeking a fight, as Grimmjow suggested. His reaction comes from a savior complex that has haunted him since his mother died protecting him. From that moment, protecting the people he cares about has become his reason to live. However, in this situation, not only was he unable to protect his friends on his own, but he also lost control to the point of attacking Ishida. This obviously shocks him, leading him to say things he never would have said if he was in his right mind. When he asks to cut off his arm and leg to make things even, it’s not about fighting fairly, but about atonement. If Ichigo truly wanted to fight on equal terms, he could have simply asked Orihime to heal Ulquiorra, as she did with Grimmjow earlier. What he really wants is to punish himself for failing to protect his loved ones once again.

ALL the spadas has a thing that define they urukiora IS nihilis, he doenst understand feelings or faith or nothing that he can see of feel with his body

Luiz

There's a phrase of his that says, "If my eyes don't reflect, then it doesn't exist."

Luiz

Read a short Bleach manga that tells his story called "Unmasked," it's a databook. The anime doesn't show his past.

Volt

Like Kaien said in the flashback, the heart is something invisible formed between people, so when they reached out toward each other even though they didn't touch a heart was formed and Ulquiorra finally understood what a heart was. Remember hollow holes are what the mask is made out of in the first place the hole appears and what was there originally goes to form the mask, so naturally when Ichigos mask breaks it goes back and fills the hole which is what was shown in the episode. Also Ichigo was dying but he was never dead, he could still hear Inoue when he was slumped. Poor Ishida his experience in the last like 5 minutes get even worse if you subscribe to the theory he has a one-sided crush on Inoue. He gets beat up, stabbed by his best friend, then sat in the cuck chair while they check on each other, not to mention he gets the sword ripped out of him I would have regretted taking her up there too lmao.

F12Berlinetta

The symbolism in this fight is so well done by Kubo. Ichigo was becoming more of a hollow while Ulquiorra was becoming more human.

Volt

I agree 100% Ichigo has been terrified of his hollow side taking over and it happened, except he can't even blame it on White because it was just him with no consciousness using Whites power. Ichigo is also a competitor he doesn't want to accept just managing to survive, like he said against Kenpachi to Zangetsu he wants to win any other outcome is meaningless to him. It is also because he is distressed like you said but Ichigo does desire victory even as he fights for others because winning means he was able to protect them completely, this outcome is like him being saved by Whites power while also endangering his friends and we know Ichigo doesn't like being protected/saved by others to begin with because of his complex. It's a more extreme version of the ending to the Byakuya fight he's only able to scream, "I won!" because he ended up defeating Byakuya with his own power/will in the end

Meliodas Sama

I really have seen Ichigo putting the fight ahead of the mission, he even refused to put on his hollow mask and fought Ulquiorra without for a while in the tower.

Soulrebel0902

Ulquiorra is one of the best written characters of the series.

Franina

A lot of Ichigo’s character was set up during the very beginning of the series with his training with Urahara and his time spent in the space with hallow Ichigo and zangetsu. If you don’t really remember that or take that into account then Ichigo’s actions and powers won’t really make sense to you. That was very crucial information

Vino

Ichigo crashed out because he chucked a sword into Uryu. It wasn't because he was invested in the fight necessarily though it was a small part of it. It's because he lost control over the very thing he's spent a TON of time worrying about and finding a solution for. The win isn't just a "win" because of the consequences associated with it. If you look at his eyes after he makes the "cut off my arm and leg then", it's almost manic. I really don't think pursuing a fight is what he was after. Uryu just having a sword in him/stabbed is fucking hilarious like he was a random ass arrancar instead of their friend. I'm glad you guys are questioning hollow Ichigo's motivations a bit more. Ulquiorra is implied to have joined Aizen BECAUSE he doesn't have answers to those questions and Aizen + the other espadas might have one but it ironically came from Orihime.

Pandrix

Woah I didn’t even catch that, and I’ve been a fan for years. The mask represents the heart and when he broke it filled the hole in his chest representing a heart. That’s insane

Volt

That's the Bleach experience in a nutshell pretty much, it took me years of brain rot + video essays to realize a lot of stuff

Pandrix

It’s crazy how you can catch new things on rewatch/ reread. Hopefully you’re also on Rice and Ginger’s channel they’re about to enter this fight and I’m scared they’ll miss the poetic writing and nuances since you have good comments and understanding

Volt

Yeah I am I’ll go on my yap session over there, probably will have to go on Inoue defense too

ShepardCommander

there is a very famous ship between ulqi x orihime a very very long time ago, not sure if that thing still exist today and thats because of this and some chapters in the manga

Hielo Kasama

Ichigo hates hollows so much he refuses to accept one being in him. Mom dying to one only solidifies it even further, monsters. Ulquiorra dies in the end because his torso was blown off, as seen in the manga.

Pandrix

Welp you were right about the Inoue defense lol

Volt

Yup could have seen that coming a mile away lol

Timothy Ahn

Ulquiorra quite possibly my top favorite character, not only in his design, but his personality and the way he was written.
