In fairness, Benioff and Weiss have always had a really weird (and imo not great) relationship with the magic in the world of ice and fire. It always felt like they were embarrassed by or didn't know what to do with the magical elements of the story, so those moments can feel pretty random when they do suddenly become very important in the plot.
