yeah this show purposely made you hate him and did a twist at the end. Personally not a fan of that kind of writing as it feels like a cheap shock factor but i still enjoyed it nonetheless

So everything that happened to MaoMao is because a baby in the rear palace got poisoned with honey. Also I think Lakan misrepresented himself as a villain probably because he had regrets on what happened.

I think Lakan blames himself for everything that happened. Her value was gone once she got pregnant, then she suffered due to him not realizing it and not taking responsibility. So in his story, he sees himself as the villain. But of course the show did want to make us suspicious of Lakan since the beginning with their portrayal of him.

True, if you think about it the only really horrible things we heard about Lakan were the ones Lakan was saying about himself. I respect that he’s not trying to justify his actions but his self-image makes the whole situation even sadder

I think a good way to put it; he is putting a self imposed punishment on himself. He wishes he can turn back time, but knows he cant and so he hates himself for it. So that punishment/villian character over the years (All of Maomao's life) has just turned into a natural habit for him.
