Something i find interesting about Unohana's Zanpakuto is that both her Shikai and her Bankai are called the same : Minazuki. The difference is that this name can be read in different ways and can be written with different kanjis, changing the whole meaning of the name Minazuki. The name from the Shikai can be read then translated to something like "Flesh-Drops' Gorge", the form where it resemble a huge manta ray that swallows people whole to heal them inside of itself, we see this form way back in the Soul Society Invasion Arc. The name of the Bankai form can be read then translated to "All Things' End", which is kind of a poetic name considering the moment when it's used.

It's not really clear in the anime, but in the manga Kenpachi and Unohana fought for 3 days straight presumably, it starts and ends pretty much simultaneously as Ichigo and Renji's training with the Asauchi. Unohana kept killing and healing Kenpachi and herself for 3 days. At the end she didn't have enough spiritual energy left to heal herself and died.

Imagine having Unohana as your favorite female character because she got hyped between 2007-2013, and then when 2013 happened, she got one fight and was killed off the same chapter she used Bankai. Her Shikai is Minazuki (肉雫唼), and her Bankai is Minazuki (皆尽). Asauchi (浅打) were first mentioned when Ichigo trained with Zangetsu in his inner world, when Ichigo was fighting Zaraki. The fact that Asauchi's are brought up again in an episode that also features Zaraki is poetic. Especially since Zaraki finally learned the name of his Zanpakuto. And this, Ichigo is rejected by the Asauchi.

if unleashed base kenpachi could beat unohana then kenpachi learning shikai and potentially bankai would be worth 2-3 unohanas (strength wise), but agreed losing her healing is a BIG BLOW. Shunsui probs realized there were some quincies stronger than both Unohana and pre-unleashed kenpachi, so they needed kenpachi to become a juggernaut or else everyone would die (in which case whats the point of healing)

actually nvm i saw the comment below saying she healed him for 3+ days. i had no idea it was that long. she must have been super weak by the time she activated her bankai so idk how strong unohana would be if she werent constantly healing the enemy

Cute little piece of trivia - Unohana is the only shinigami we've met so far whose shikai and bankai are homonyms - the kanji is written differently but both her shikai and bankai are pronounced "Minazuki". I understand the "lore" reason for Unohana dying but given the situation against the Quincies I think it was a dumb fucking decision by Kubo to sacrifice such a powerhouse. If she must die to keep one Kenpachi then let her die after killing Quincy.

One key thing to remember is that even Unohana isn't actually a rival to Kenpachi in the present day. He literally killed her while she was in bankai, and he was using a plain sword. She obviously means a lot to him, but that's why she points out that he has new rivals. Ichigo and the others are achieving new heights of power. The fact that Kenpachi was winning as a child proves that she wouldn't really be able to keep up with him. She never could. You guys are awesome at analyzing all of this!
