I'm loving your reactions to this show, so what I'm going to say isn't at all directed at you. I grew up with a dub of the show and I absolutely hate the way they did mine and the English one as well. No one is taking it seriously, they keep making little jokes here and there, it just sound more like a jokey abridged version than an official dub. I feel like this is one of the reasons people don't take this show seriously, and prefer Z.

dragon ball started out as a comedy manga, it is by far funnier in the english dub if you are a english speaker

I know it's a "gag" manga originally. But the point of translation and localization is to convey the "vibe" of the original. Even if it's comedy, the work is still to be taken seriously, in my opinion. Some of the jokes are language-based and don't translate well, of course, but what I find from this dub, and again, the one I grew up with, is that it just became amateur stand-up hour for the writers/actors. There was a time where anime was seen as kid stuff and people didn't take it seriously, and it was very much reflected in the quality of the work that was being done by translators and localizers. This dub, and my local one, is non-stop quips, which isn't the case with the original(I read the manga and watched the sub). It's okay if you enjoy it, I understand that it's nostalgic for a lot of people, but I just get frustrated when I feel like they didn't take their work seriously.

i just disagree with you blatantly about the first part of dragon ball, toriyama wanted it to be goofy, he had just finished dr slump and wanted dragon ball to be in the same vein, it wasnt until the next arc that it starts to get a bit serious and even then its still more funny than serious, its the following arc where it actually turns from a gag adventure manga into a serious manga with a bit of gag

Personally having a great time and enjoying it. The comedy is refreshing. I think we take the show seriously when applicable. We really appreciate the message in some of the upcoming episodes and it made me fall in love with the show 🥰 I think it really depends on the person and what they make out of it ♥
