I had to decline a few requests. They just weren’t possible or practical for me to do, or they’d cause serious harm to the patient. Giving someone the ability to eat grass. Give someone wings - that was a full-body set of modifications, on top of large, heavy structures. Extra arms required so much work and arcanite I couldn’t even begin the attempt. Replacing lungs with gills would just flat-out kill the person asking for them. Someone asked me to remove their refractory period, and while that modification was in theory small enough for me to change, it involved serious messing with their brain, and I was not going there.

Some of the declines burned me deep inside.

I couldn’t fix someone who was seeing hallucinations and hearing voices. I could only refer them to an apothecary, who might, might be able to brew up a potion to stop the voices. Temporarily.

I couldn’t split apart conjoined twins, not at the age they were at and level of fusing. Fascinatingly, they had two Systems, one each, but their physical stat adjustments to their body was the sum of the two stats. There was no line in the middle, nor did the stats multiply each other. The stats also summed with each other before getting refactored into the multiplier.

I did escort them to the main School hospital though. The people working there would love a project of that size, and I foresaw dozens and dozens of levels for numerous people in the future.

I swung by Marcelle’s office on the way back.

“Hey Marcelle!” I knocked on her door. “Got a minute?”

She put down a paper she was grading.

“A quick one, yes. Found something you can’t handle?”

I nodded.

“Yeah, conjoined twins. I sent them to the hospital, that’s why I’m up here. Anyways, noticed their System was additive on their body, which was a bit of a surprise.”

Marcelle gave me a tired look, and broke out a bottle of wine. I scurried forward and grabbed a seat, slightly disappointed as she only poured one glass.

“I am not sending an even slightly tipsy biomancer to work. Not in a thousand years.” She glared at me.

“Ah, fair enough.” I wasn’t about to say “Hey, I can purge it out of my system, I’m totally not a lush, can I have some free booze please?” I was bad at social stuff, I wasn’t a complete idiot.

“Anyways, quick version. Congratulations, you’ve stumbled upon one of the slightly darker biomancy secrets. You might’ve noticed that conjoined twins weren’t covered in any of your classes, and that’s on purpose.”

I thought about it, the puzzle immediately clicking. I pulled a face.

“Ooooohhh… because anyone inclined towards power, regardless of the price, is going to start grafting heads to themselves.”

“Exactly. Usually takes the form of a cabal or a cult, where the people whose heads get removed and attached to the greater whole are voluntarily joining.”

I shuddered at the image.

“Since they’re willing, they’ve got all the skills available.”

“Quick study. You’re correct. The Exterreri Empire has a standing bounty on them, along with most other nations. They technically don’t violate a divine decree.”

Marcelle shuddered, and tipped the entire glass back, immediately refilling it.

“Right. I need to work, and you’ve brought back a number of terrible memories. Please don’t spread it to other biomancers. The fewer people that figure it out, the fewer monstrosities are made.”

I left, fully onboard with Marcelle’s suggestion. I could imagine it now. A vast flesh-blob, a huge mouth in the middle, and dozens upon dozens of heads grafted onto it, each one with their own skillset.

Interesting that it didn’t apply to hydras. Maybe that was a case of “one being, many heads”, as opposed to “many heads, many beings.”

=======================

I made it back down to my tent on the fairgrounds, waving to Auri as she continued working her half-dozen baking stations, luring in customers with the delicious scent of baking food.

Which, ironically, seemed to be frustrating Auri somewhat as her rival-in-baking was also making brisk sales off of her delicious smells wafting through the air.

I grabbed her attention as I dodged the line filled with students and tourists.

“Hey Auri!”

“Brrrpt!” A pair of mage hands flew over with a delicious smelling pie. My stomach rumbled, reminding me that I’d gotten a little too deep in the zone, and I’d been neglecting food.

Again.

“Thanks!”

With that I went back to work.

As with every single invention, people used it for weird sex things. SO MANY weird sex things. Every third client of mine wanted modifications for sexual gratification. Bigger penis. Smaller penis. Hooked penis. Extra penis. Larger breasts. Smaller breasts. Perky breasts. More breasts. Extra nerves. Extra sensitivity.

Tentacles.

Dear gods and goddess, why. Why would anyone want to graft tentacles onto their body just for sex?

Enlarged prostate. More accessible prostate. Extra lubrication.

No levels in [Smooth as a Baby’s Bottom]. I was hitting areas that the System seemed to think I knew perfectly.

Requests to render people sterile, both male and female. Those were both easy, and incredibly hard. Easy in the sense that I just needed to snip exactly the right place, hard because I needed to do a deep dive and investigation to make sure they knew what they were getting into, and more importantly, that they weren’t getting coerced.

Vibrating… everything.

Split, longer, ridged, bumpy tongues.

Fluid… manipulations…

The less said on that topic the better.

Rewiring nerve clusters in unusual positions to trigger massive responses. I was judging some of these people, a few of them quite a lot, but I did quietly file that one away for Iona. I bet she’d love something like that, and the ethics of it were fine.

There were a few more ideas that I quietly filed away in my mental filing cabinet.

The entire thing wanted me to pour bleach into my ears so I’d never have to hear the weird requests again. If I had to explain to one more overly cocky teenager that nobody wanted a 20 inch by 4 inch penis anywhere near their parts, I was going to scream.

====================================================

I raised my eyebrows when a scrawny teenage girl came in. Not my usual demographic, but hey, practice was practice. Plus I could do my little part to help people.

I was not going to fast-forward puberty though. I checked her level.

[Laborer - 32]. Probably waiting for the right circumstances for their next class. If they were an [Apprentice] right now, and they got promoted at their job to [Journeywoman], then their next class up would offer a stronger [Journeywoman] class.

The more things changed, the more they stayed the same. Kids, almost the world around, still started working at 8 when they unlocked the System.

“I can see the future!” I proclaimed once again. “You need… BIOMANCY!”

She flinched at my pronouncement, and I immediately felt bad. She looked around, like she was going to bolt.

“Come on in, sit, sit.” I gestured to the chair in front of me. “Tell me what’s going on?”

Like a skittish colt, she sat down in the chair across from me.

“I, well, you’re a biomancer, right?”

I was no good with small talk, but I could see gigantic flashing mirage signs and everything.

“Yes.”

“Ok, well, um, I…” She trailed off, clenching her fists and looking down.

I let her be, my mana rapidly ticking up from my last patient. Finally, she found her courage.

“I don’t think I’m in the right body.” She whispered, eyes darting back to the tent flap.

“Can you tell me more about that?” I asked her.

“I’m a boy.” He whispered. “I feel like I’m a boy. I should’ve been a boy. But I’m stuck in a girl’s body.”

Oh fuck this wasn’t going to be an easy one. Not by a long shot.

“Alright, what else can you tell me?”

Encouraged, he started to get some steam.

“Everyone around me says I’m a girl. They say I should act like one. Dress like one. But I don’t want to! I’m a boy. Can you fix me?”

“How long have you felt like this?” The only thing saving my inexperienced butt were all the classes I’d taken, and more than a few checklists I’d read. I was mixing and matching hard here.

“All my life!” He brightened up. “I’ve always known. Now my body’s changing, and it’s becoming even more icky, and I just can’t stand it!” He practically burst into tears at the end.

I tapped the table with all my fingers, thinking.

He was definitely transgendered, no question about it. The question was, what did I do about that?

A proper transition was mana-intensive, among other things. It wasn’t quite a full-bodied transformation, but it was close. I’d need to impact nearly every part of his body, although…

Hmmmm…

I could cheat on a large number of changes. Benefit of working with kids.

Okay, time to work through a few more questions.

“Do your parents know you’re here?”

He looked terribly guilty for a moment, then nodded.

I gave him my best incredulous look.

“Really?”

He shook his head.

“Please?” He begged.

It wasn’t changing my decision, but I still gave him a hard look.

“Alright. Things you need to know. First off, I don’t want to get your hopes up too high. You’re a lightweight, but any changes I need to do are going to be massive. It’s entirely possible that your weight and your vitality combined are going to be too much for me.” I said.

“If I had less vitality, it’d be easier for you?” He said.

I nodded.

“Yes, but-”

A cold flash of horror went over me as the classic classing-up lights started dancing around his head, and he smashed his head onto the table.

“No no no oh no don’t do this to me.” I scrambled out of my chair, healing him and readjusting his body to be more comfortable.

“FUCK!” I swore, confident that my privacy runes would stop the noise from escaping the tent.

There was no way in hell I wasn’t going to give it my best efforts now. Not after watching him torpedo his entire class just for a chance.

I popped my head out of my tent, catching Auri’s eye.

“Brrrpt?” She asked.

“I need, like, two of everything. Stat.”

“Brrrpt!” She gave me a little salute, and I got dirty, dirty looks from the people in line.

I shot them the finger as I retreated back into my tent, feeling much better.

Significant calories were going to be applied to this problem. Half stress eating from me, half the sheer amount of work I was about to do was going to be hungry, half making sure the kid had a solid meal in him before I did major work, half the kid looked poor in the first place and needed a meal.

If I ended up with as many people halves as I did food halves, I’d be in trouble.

Hands flew into the tent, loading the table up with pies, breads, scones, biscuits and more.

It didn’t take long before he jerked and gasped in his chair, looking suspiciously at the food once he reoriented himself.

“Okay. A few things. First, don’t do stupid shit like that without talking with me first.”

He meekly nodded his head.

“Second, let me finish everything I wanted to say!”

I debated throwing the rest of the biscuit I was nibbling on at him, but that would be overly mean. Kid was jumpy enough.

“Now, what’s your name?”

His mouth twisted in a grimace.

“Desi. I hate it.” He was looking at the food longingly.

“Right, ok. I’ma call you kiddo.” Oh gods kiddo was a terrible nickname. What was I doing? Where was Iona when I needed her to bail me out of awkward social situations? I did know if I tried to defuse the awkward I’d probably just make it worse, so instead I aimed for professionally solving his problems as quickly as possible.

“Kiddo, you should eat up. Grab a bunch. It’s free, don’t worry. Let me give you the rest of the speech.”

I took a deep breath.

“If - IF - I mess with your body, it’s practically irreversible,” I mentally cursed as his eyes started shining, and I just knew almost everything I was about to say was going to go in one ear, and out the other. “Technically, another, stronger biomancer could come along and reverse the changes I’m going to perform, but we’re a rare breed, and usually cost an arm and a leg. Permanent. Forever. Unless something happens that I’m not expecting, you’re likely going to never have kids. System might come along and offer you a skill that solves that problem, but expect no kids.”

The kid nodded, and I started to doubt myself. I’d met him all of fifteen minutes ago, and I was about to perform life-changing magic on him.

“I have no idea what your parents will say,” I did know I wasn’t afraid of them trying to absolutely murder me, but that was only because of my levels. “But there will be people out there who’ll be unhappy. Because life is filled with idiots, and there’s no pleasing everyone. Someone will always find an excuse to dislike someone else. Heck, I got grief once because my hair is brown! What a dumb thing to complain to someone about.” I was rambling, and I shut up.

“Yeah.” He quietly agreed.

“Right, also…” I went over every aspect I could think of. He seemed to follow, and without ceremony, I found myself touching his hand, using [Elvenoid Visualization] to start flickering through a dozen different views of his current body.

Early puberty meant hormones had started to ramp up, but not necessarily make huge, sweeping changes yet. The hormone production and their effects was one of the biggest ways I was cheating. Instead of going through and reversing every single change that had been made so far, then making the changes that should’ve happened, I was going to adjust the hormonal balance and let that do most of the talking. Right now, the body wanted to produce more estrogen and progesterone than testosterone, and I needed to make tiny, subtle adjustments so it’d produce more testosterone, and less estrogen and progesterone.

Kids were easy in many ways, but one tricky part was I needed the body to still give off the ‘we’re done with puberty’ signal. Otherwise, kiddo would never stop going through puberty, and down that path lay a quick heart attack after a short life as a giant.

It was one of the most well-studied biomancy phenomena. After all, most biomancy was done on young teens, exactly like kiddo. It was tricky, but the answer was a well-worn groove in my memory.

There might be some tiny traces of the earlier hormonal balance, but I was able to impact things early enough that it wasn’t a huge deal. Add in a bit of vitality, almost any general appearance skill, and everything would come right out in the wash.

No, the tricky, mana-intense part were the parts. He had female reproductive organs, and I needed to turn them into male reproductive organs, even if they were semi-decorative. As a fetus developed, they made proto-organs, which quickly developed into the male or female equivalent. For example, the proto-organs which turned into ovaries on a girl, would turn into testes on a boy. It was ‘easier’ to change the organ into what it ‘could have been’, than to simply force everything into a correct position. ‘Easier’ meant ‘a better image that saves mana’, and I wanted all the mana I could manage.

The clitoris needed to expand, and combine with the urethral opening, which I needed to elongate. The labia minora and majora would turn into the scrotum, and the entire pelvis needed serious rearrangement.

The sacrum was going to be widened along with the coccyx, effectively closing off the former birth canal. The Iliac crest needed to lose its flare, while the ischium went from a boxy shape to a smooth shape. The pubic bone was going to get filed away from a fat bone to a skinny bone, which all in all made the pubic arch go from wide to narrow.

The fallopian tubes were turning into the vas deferens, and the list went on and on.

I wasn’t touching head size or height. I was going to let puberty handle those. The worst case of leaving it alone was he’d end up shorter. Oh no. I was going to play around with the thorax, torso ratios, femur thickness, and spinal angles, along with the hundreds of thousands of tiny other extra changes I needed to make.

I started flicking through the different views I had of his body, making adjustments to my rapidly expanding mental model each time I noted a different place that needed an adjustment. I felt him occasionally moving under my hand. I ignored the distraction. My other hand was on my arcanite ball, ready to pull in extra mana.

View after view, system after system went through my mind as I continued to check and double check my work. I mentally laid over my new system over the old system, and realized I’d neglected a few minor veins, mentally unhooking them from old places and reattaching them to new ones.

Only after I’d exhaustively checked every system, from sweat glands to nervous three times without making a single change did I pull the trigger.

The kid screamed. His face contorted as he writhed under my hands, and I immediately recast [Elvenoid Visualization], furiously checking what was wrong.

I also wrapped him in [Mantle of the Stars], not letting him move while I looked into things. Last thing I needed was for him to run away screaming in agony. That’d cause problems, problems that would stop me from fixing what happened.

I immediately sprinted to the nerves, using the pathways of what had lit up to trace where the problem was.

Everything I touched was on fire.

I made a snap decision.

I was fully confident in my abilities as a biomancer, and as a healer. I was fully confident nothing I’d done was lethal, or would kill him.

[Permanence] flashed through him, making what I’d done stick, then I blasted him with healing. The screaming immediately stopped.

I opened my eyes, kiddo squirming uncomfortably in the chair.

“It itches.” He complained, scratching furiously.

I shrugged.

“Eh, it’s the new nerves. They’re complaining that everything’s new. You ok? Everything good?”

He checked in his pants - crude kid - and looked up at me, eyes shining.

“I’m a boy now.” He gasped.

I snorted at him.

“You always were.”

The little shit tried to strangle me with hugs.

ayyy good for ya kiddo! getting to live with the right body is a joy to see. great chap!

Chloe Root

Love love love this so much.

hmDrake

That was very sweet.

elijah pickett

Not cool, dude trying to strangle Elaine. After she helped him and everything. Being serious, a very cool chapter.

Sesharan

The “weird sex things” section gave me some serious flashbacks to Corruption of Champions.

rizen

I think I need to send the past few chapters and this one to a friend. Massive catharsis for him after the struggles he went through with his transition.

Clarence Bassanini

No way in hell she just ditch biomancy after that day. It just resonate too much with her as a healer.

Todor

Will that work? 1. Find conjoined twins. 2. Separate them with sword. 3. Heal both halves separately. 4. Have two identical pairs of conjoined twins.

Viria

Damn, that was unexpectedly wholesome

Mike G.

Very well done, thanks for the chapters!

Malchome

The other thing that she forgot to ask or was not brought up was if he was a he in a past life and was reincarnated in as a she unlike Elaine being the same in both worlds.

Not sure I like the ethics of performing life altering surgery on a child currently going through puberty who you have known for a total of 15 minutes. Especially while knowingly ignoring parental consent. There is a very good reason why you have to go through psychological evaluations sometimes for months before initiating this type of surgery. And having the parents on board and aware is genuinely important because the child NEEDS an emotional support system.

Zero

I was interested in the biology aspect of it (studying medicine hehe) all but the ethics of doing anything permanent to a child or a teenager and without any guardian around isn’t what I would call responsible. I get this is a fantasy world where kids grow up much faster then our modern standards but still irks me that she as a health care professional that somewhat uses the modern day code of ethics decides “fuck it the kid really wants this” and does something that the kid might never be able to change without paying impossible amounts to a rare breed of biomancers.

Daniel

Even if the dude can have kids it's unlikely Elaine can make X chromosomes. All the children are guaranteed girls. That seems quite ironic.

Han Pol

could the elephantkin not also do the I respect my classes fully to lower his vitality and then get biomanced to again take classes with vitality

Elaine

good wholesome chappie

OMG this chapter is amazing thank you thank you thank you.

Jonathan Timm

It was a good chapter but I hope she gets punished for it because Holy shit thats unethical as. Im not being funny but she just changed that kids life forever with no though if what would happen if the child changes there mind. Let alone not using a nerve block to stop the pain of new nerves growing ,should trigger her oath

Kevin Nilsson

She should definatly get oath struck due to this. Even if you were able to change everything perfectly since its a once and done deal YOU NEED A LOTTTTTTTTT OF talks.and then some more. Its possible that they'll regret the change when they get older. Changing ur sex aint no magic bullet

RavenInMay

Every trans person ever: “Wow I would walk through helllfire for treatment like this. Especially someone who ignored my abusive bigoted parents.” Random cis people: “bUt iS ThiS rEAllY EtHICaL??”

Well that seemed a bit... hasty

Hopefully this will be a single chapter in the book release?

You realize that even in the most totally pro-transgender clinic in the world this would be considered massively unethically fast, with basically zero due diligence, to do this. But, whatever, I don’t come here for substantive comments on medical ethics (though you’ve taken it more seriously in the past). I would strongly advise against using your story as a platform for cultural commentary, though. Reads pretty pedantic.

Green Steve

Wow there are some weird comments... Imagine not being able to take a story for what it is... Anyways, great chapter and keep up the amazing work!

GeneralTusk

I don't have a problem with the kid being transitioned but I still think Elaine should of checked all the boxes and consulted a therapist first to verify the patients mental state. With truth skills Elaine could of been 100% sure the patient was sure and had always felt that she was boy or she just didn't like being treated like a girl. She basically treated a person without verifying the diagnosis. In all honesty a truth skill would be very useful for Elaine since everyone lies. An evolution of her passionate learning skill could maybe do it. After this she should be called in by her advisor and given a talking to about following proper procedures.

What

Ooof, since large scale biomancy changes become practically impossible with more vitality, and healing wipes away any changes other than permanent biomancy, it is likely impossible for adults in this setting to transition through any means without completely resetting all their classes at the same time or getting a dedicated transformation class themselves for the purpose. That certainly adds a bit of immediacy to the issue, especially with the kiddo already having reset their classes.

When Elaine finally does a body mod of Iona, will she sign her work with a tattoo in an inconspicuous place? "Elaine's, <3 <3 <3".

Hurray~ Elane is cool~

I absolutely loved the chapter Selkie! I loved the chapter for its content but also exploring a controversial subject and sticking to following Elaine's view instead of making her act out of character to fulfill someone morally correct answer. As to what would have been the moral right thing to do... depends on the person and culture. To further expand upon Elaine's view, Elaine is someone who ran away as a child in direct opposition of what her parents and everyone else from her village wanted for her. This is from her loving parents who were working towards what they thought was the best outcome for her. Elaine meanwhile wanted something else out of life and wanted to defy the odds and her very society and paid the hefty cost that others did not believe she could. Note this is not me stating what is right and wrong, the costs Elaine has paid throughout her life to do what she thought was best is far too much for many people, even if many think they are ready. And I feel that Elaine witnessing another kid of a young age risk everything family, friends and even his own class which he may never be able to change to follow his own path would resonate a lot with that kid that ran from her village and everyone she knew to try and catch up to band of rangers. Forget the tiny chance of being one of the like 5 women to make it as a ranger, but the even smaller chance of catching up to them and surviving in the wilderness full of bandits and animals. I see a bit of that wild child in Elaine smiling a toothy grin at the kid who changed her class without the slightest hesitation.

Alex Matheny

Great chapter. I truly appreciate your exploration of topics relevant in today's world in this story through the lens on this world.

SHADOUX9

Ok so I have a question. It is shown throughout btdem that classes can be tailored towards an individuals desires. So in the case of the kid with dysmorphia, wouldn't their spirit guide show them the best path towards changing their sex? Also since Elaine's oath has no issues with modding transgendersd individuals, how would it deal with a transabled person?

Athena Alexandria

I’m going to put myself out here a bit, at the risk of the bigots coming for me. I’m a trans woman. I was born male but I’ve known I was a girl for my entire life. I told my mom I wanted to be a girl when I was 3. I cried when my voice dropped in high school. I used to hate taking showers because I would look down to a flat chest and a penis. I would have given ANYTHING to have what kiddo had in this chapter. And it also likely would have been done without parental consent, because my parents are not understanding on the best of days, and… worse on other days. The ONLY THING I regret about my transition is that I didn’t get to start sooner. I’m 25 now and I’ve had to go through incredibly painful processes to remove facial hair, voice training to make my voice feminine, pay hundreds of dollars every year for hormones, with more in the future that I won’t get into. I missed key childhood experiences that most little girls get, was forced to be naked around men, denied the chance to do anything considered feminine, and I honestly mourn for my younger self. I now pass relatively well in most settings, everyone identifies me as a woman. Everywhere I go, people call me ma’am, or miss. Yet if I wanted a breast augmentation, or plastic surgery for my face, I need letters from a mental health professional. I’m lucky I live where I do, otherwise it would potentially be multiple letters from multiple people. Cis people don’t need letters for the exact same surgeries. Nobody trusts trans people to make decisions about their own body. Everyone kept telling me I’d regret it because I couldn’t have kids. People mocked me for wanting to experience a period or pregnancy. The people in my life who knew me pre transition take every opportunity to tell me how I’m still a man and everything I’m doing is just “ruining my body”. This world is inherently against trans people because people still see us as sick and incapable weirdos who can’t be trusted to know what’s best with them. All of that to say, the ONLY unethical thing that happened in this chapter is Elaine did not do her due diligence to make sure kiddo had a support network, that he wanted all parts of the medical transition (some people want bottom surgery some don’t as an example), and that he would be ok after the transition. Kiddo said he was trans, and she believed him. That was the most important and ethical thing she could do in that moment. Trust trans people to know what’s best for them. Believe people when they say they are trans. They know better than you do or some doctor does. And Selkie, thank you for this chapter. It made me cry. I’m so happy for kiddo, and also so jealous of him. You handled this incredibly well, and I appreciate it.

Squirtle

I feel bad for the Kiddo, he made the wrong decision... Should've asked to become a male Elf!

AntiClimax she her

Not sure how i like this or the chapter ahead of this one. For this one, I am uncomfortable with the transition of the child. From what I saw, I think that Elaine probably made the best decision she could (at least without being able to invest time into it). A kid who immediately resets their class for the chance to transition, without being asked? If that kid isn't suicidal yet, it was coming. Elaine probably saved his life (assuming parents/community doesn't kill them). I'm so glad that she listened to and believed him. So many people discount what kids say about themselves just because they're kids. And it SUCKS telling someone who you really are and them telling you that they know better. That said, it was unethical, and irresponsible of Elaine to do without at least knowing more about the kid's situation. Additionally, this is currently a wedge issue IRL, with people using trans kids, and claiming that people are trying to transition kids too young with surgeries and hormones. Scaring people in order to take away trans health care and enact more restrictive laws against us. People will see trans and trans affirming people like myself believe that Elaine did what was more right in this specific situation and think that we want to trans all the kids, irresponsibly. And, like, no! IRL Elaine should lose her license to practice medicine and likely be jailed for such an egregious ethics violation. Steps do need to be taken to ensure that what is best for the patient is done, whether it's to transition them or not, and IRL we shouldn't be doing surgeries on kids, and we don't. There's better things that can be done (puberty blockers, etc), but if surgery was necessary for the best outcome, that would change the calculus. But this isn't IRL, and this was probably this kid's one chance to have a life. And it wasn't surgery, it was literally fixing his body. I wish so hard that I would have had that opportunity before puberty broke my body worse.

Beelzy

I second what AntiClimax said, it's 'transgender' not 'transgendered'. Also so many idiots here who don't have dysphoria commenting where they have no place making criticism. So here is the thing, If this was real there could be a small chance the kid changes their mind, but there is a much larger change of them being correct. So you have two choices, by giving them the means to transition they have a lesser likelyhood of growing up with a body of the wrong gender, a statistically significant chance. Less than 1/100 people detrans, it is unethical to deny their request. Probably should have had a longer discussion with them though before doing the thing, but I'm just putting that to this being a story where that much detail would be a bit of a bore.

fbt

Indep of other topics, I was a little surprised she was limited in ways oddly similar to our current tech, when working on the last person. Btwn biomancy & healing idk why (mana sufficiency allowing) she wasn't able to do working "parts" ("semi decorative" was the term used) or roughly normal fertility after the redo.

Karma Baris

thank you so much for this chapter, as a transwoman myself this means a lot thank you so much, so much fantasy just ignores this, and seeing it acknowledge and addressed is such a powerful thing

Cirvante

Rather than start another debate on medical ethics, I'd like to talk about elephant dude from last chapter and high-vitality biomancy patients in general. I believe a somewhat easy solution to this problem can be found in wizardry. Elaine's wizardry teacher has claimed that nearly every skill can be replicated through wizardry runes. Origen used his archaic runes to enchant his team's gear to give them higher stats. Elaine has only recently mentioned again how buffs can be used to bypass defenses and debuff classers. The most prominent example for this was the Guardsman Buff, which boosted the target's Vitality at the cost of Mana Regeneration. So my idea was to use a runic spell array to create a buff that boosts for example Dexterity at the cost of Vitality. As a buff it bypasses Vitality and can be used to temporarily lower the stat to below 100. A patient that is sitting still should have low risk of injuring themselves and any self-inflicted damage can be quickly healed by Elaine with a touch. So basically, artificially lower Vitality with a wizardry buff, perform biomancy at significantly reduced cost, make the changes permanent and remove buff. Might be too late for elephant dude, but something worth exploring for herself, Iona, and her friends. If her wizardry knowledge is too limited to invent the runes, ask for help from her teacher or other students. Hell, the biomancy department might even sponsor the development of such a runic spell, since it would literally revolutionize their profession.

Heedless

I am not sure how I feel about this chapter. It felt less like it was advancing Elaine‘s character or immersing us in the wonderful weirdness of the world, and more like a political screed aimed directly at the reader. A screed I largely agree with, but still jarring in a series of books that have dealt with their world’s internal politics but never before gone in for the “very special episode“. More immediately, this was a case that Elaine should have kicked up to more senior biomancers. Just as in our world, gender reassignment should not be performed by a doctor who has never even seen it done before, and the patient is going to need significant assistance navigating his family and community in his new body. Elaine fails to deliver on both counts, and given how much of a stickler she usually is for the best interest of her patients, it feels forced.

Jarloway

I'm kinda hoping her teacher takes her to task for this kind of thing. This is way too close to a moral grey area to risk with her oath. If she gets half way through treating her patient and makes a mistake or begins doubting or second guessing herself and gets slapped down by an oath violation, it will kill her patient as she will be in too much pain to help or get help, violating her oath again. This whole branch of magic just seems like a rough way for her to kill/cripple herself and not worth the risk. Also I wish you had saved this for a double chapter with the next one so we could see your thought process born out instead of sitting in the comments after the cutoff.

Heedless

I had a comment vanish. I don’t think I said anything objectionable. Was this a glitch, or did I get flagged?

Thomas Bell

Man I hate it when a creator decides to jump feet first on a politically divisive issue. Technically it is different from the current situation as it actually is possible to "transition" someone but doing so to a child without the parents being informed is a MASSIVE red flag. Maybe make the patient 18/21, a reset from 128 is far more impactful and you avoid the whole child conundrum.

Political landmine goes boom.

Healing on the battlefield where there is fighting and risk gives more xp correct? How does one abuse the system with biomancy to gain levels or system achievements? Always doing what the client asks is not... Impressive. Certainly elaine doesn't plan to do a classup on biomency currently so gaining and doing difficult things under pressure is not on her to so list... But idk? Client feeling distress? The kid feeling what? He didn't feel endangered. Or life at risk. Only the diabetes one was endangered... So how does one abuse biomency? In a battlefield risky situation i mean? Healers were not expected to be on the battlefield and sentinel dawn was the first. And she gained a lot from the system from that. Biomency should have some possibility of using it no? Or is it completely passive? I would expect a potioneer who is say... Poisoned and brewing a solution would get better xp than brewing a solution to sell to an adventurer. But biomency is close to healing and healing is better under pressure so who knows?

Cirvante

Okay, I'll give you one. Step 1: Become a Biomancer. Step 2: Get a Channel skill. Step 3: Channel a biomancy spell to wreck all the blood vessels in the target's brain. Step 4: Get close to target and cast the channeled spell. Step 5: ????? Step 6: Profit! You could have a secondary Mirage/Mist class to sneak up on your target and hit them with your Stroke spell. Mind you, killing things with biomancy gives you achievements for better classes that kill things with biomancy. There should still be some carry-over though.

Political landmine goes boom, the only real problem here is the age of the child when Elaine makes the modifications. It would be different if she promised to do it at a later time or if the age was changed from young to young adult. If you view this from in story perspective, Elaine takes a huge risk, she doesn't know about the legality of making changes to someone underage without permission, nor does she know of the repercussions for when the parents complain. Second problem comes when you again take into account the young age of the patient, they were fine after leaving the tent but what about afterwards? There are issues of whether their parents would accept them or not, and then issues of identification which would contain the previous sex of the patient. Regardless of what position someone has on this politically, this was poorly executed by Elaine, she lacked too much information and committed her actions recklessly.

Brock Schlachter

Elaine is a woman of action at her core. This fits very well with her character, and didn't seem misplaced at all. as soon as he came into the clinic I knew what she was going to do, possible legality/political repercussions aside.

SelkieMyth

I agree that Elaine acted a little impulsively and a bit recklessly. Doing this properly would've required her to spend quite a bit more time on background investigations before pulling the trigger.

Cirvante

It's definitely in-character for her. The real question is whether she'll get away with it without any negative consequences. Even if it's just a lecture from someone.

evyatar

Inefficient as fuck but ok, wasn't what i meant. A biomancer who wants levels and doesn't care for morality would engineer self reproduction plants that grow fast reproduce fight and got poisoned roots that say make the water poison. The rivers. The rain that falls..may touch the root and sink.. later this poison kill. Another route is engineer disease. Should be possible using biomency on bacteria. Or spores.use it like toxic but worse in every way possible

Sable

Made the kid seem too young. Should've had a 19 year old or something. Someone old enough to make a decision, especially in a world where the dad is in control. Just my opinion tho.

What

The culture with the dads in total control died over 10000 years ago.

Quentin Long

"The culture with the dad's in total control died over 10000 years ago." You sure about that? Yes, Reman law got changed to grant women full equality in the eyes of the law. How much do you want to bet that assholes like the one whose children Elaine gave a more-loving home were still being exactly as assholey to women even after the laws changed? If you want a RealWorld example of cultural change failing to match legal change, you might want to look into the past few centuries of race relations in the USA.

Cirvante

Eh, that sort of stuff gets people sent after you who can disintegrate you with a thought. The thing about battlefield healing is that it was already a thing before Elaine. The army had power healers who would stabilize patients until the control healers could heal them properly. Elaine's Oath just allowed her to do both in one class, with superior healing knowledge. Technically anyone can level faster when they are in danger. Combat classers just have an easier time doing it, since fighting is inherently dangerous and they can work their craft in battle. Healing is actually needed on a battlefield as opposed to biomancy. The latter could still be used offensively by deliberately messing up vital parts of the target's physiology, but it's really inefficient. It generally requires touch and a lot of power to overcome someone's Vitality. Channel can help with that. People always think of Destruction's build when they hear Channel, all Mana Regeneration with very little power, but you could have decent power on a Channel build. Enough to channel for 30 seconds, drain your mana pool and arcanite and unleash a spell that can completely overwhelm your target's defenses. It would allow you to punch up in battle and outperform even power mages. You could even do silly, inefficient stuff like teleport someone's heart into your hand as a Spatial mage. Or fling them into orbit as a Gravity mage.

evyatar

Yep a rogue biomancer who tinker in diseases would get hunted. The problem is a dead-man-switch. Kill me and the disease get free and killing millions possibly. On the other hand. Create a tree with sap that heals.or graft a healer's head that was about to die due to old age on a tree. If the healer had an healing aura... Weirwood tree that heals lol Talking about that. The tree can reproduce. Does the skills the healer has get inherited? Cloning with grafting plants is fucking easy

MrGaujail

Male dominance should still be present in most countrys of the world but only specifically and in mortal contrys. The reasons why I think that is the existence of the Valkyries and the chapters of the childhood of Iona. Women should be equals to men in this world, but only among hight leveled peoples. And that not what influence the problem of consent because in our society a doctor accepting this kind of decision from a 12 year old in less than 15 min is absurd. But in Pallos that should be ok, only because of how we know the Valkyries recruiting works (more or less abducting 8 year old rebel girls, with official approvement) once again.

Cirvante

Your dead-man-switch would matter little to the Wardens or Inquisitors that would hunt you down. A disease can always be eradicated by a specialized disease healer. And since it's not really a magical disease like a Miasma mage would create, they'd do it easily, especially with a level advantage. And once you start grafting heads around, you'll also have the Exterreri vampires and a dozen other nations come after you. As a biomancer you really only have a few options for faster leveling that won't get you hunted down and executed. First option, offer your services for a pittance and biomance dozens of children every day. Most biomancers will offer their services at a premium and thereby maximize their revenue at the cost of experience gain. Second option, use Channel with biomancy to overpower the Vitality of adults. Higher-level target, more mana, more experience. Third option, use biomancy for useful things like healing trees, super crops, enhanced farm animals, it should get you a steady stream of experience. Fourth option, create a build that is part biomancer part shapeshifter and use that in combat. Claws, venom, tentacles, spikes. Fight like those aliens from Edge of Tomorrow, basically. Fifth option, use biomancy offensively in combat with a specialized Stroke skill and Channel. There might be more options, but that's all I could think off right now.

Cirvante

There's also the fact that, at least for humans, sexual dimorphism gives men an incredible advantage in terms of physical baseline capabilities. Stats and skills only multiply what is already there. Without the early-childhood biomancy, Iona would have had a rough time as a Warrior. Of course, Magic is the great equalizer, but how many peasants are running around with Mage classes? Especially since those are limited to level 256 in mortal lands. From what we've seen so far, we have a lot of feudal societies in Iona's time and they don't exactly have a great track record with equality, neither between social classes nor the sexes. And the trend used to always be that older, well-established men would marry younger, fertile women. That would translate to significant differences in levels and stats. I'd still expect most mortal countries to be somewhat patriarchal, though not nearly as bad as Remus was.

PatronTurtle

Honestly, the only reason I don't see Elaine's actions here completely violating her [Oath] (ignoring the ethics of consent of a minor) is because the transition is magic. No irreparable damage and potentially reversible if they regret the change later

Quentin Long

"Honestly, the only reason I don't see Elaine's actions here completely violating her [Oath]…" Hmm. The kid was clearly very distraught about their condition. They were instantly willing to do themselves bodily harm (you know, beating their head against a table?) the instant they realized that doing so might make transition easier, more possible, for the biomancer. And you think that Elaine doing the transition comes anywhere within bazooka range of violating her Oath? Huh. What a peculiar position you have.

What

That's actually why I said 10k rather than 15k, as I was alluding to the fall of Remus and subsequent death of it's culture rather than the initial legislative change that we saw that probably had lots of hangups. It's been so long since Remus fell that any of the newer civilizations family power dynamics are effectively a blank slate to us.

Nobody

Beyond the consent of a minor it's also (pretty easily) arguable that someone in a mental state where they won't even hesitate to self harm if it means getting the treatment they want isn't capable of informed consent... at the very least a psychiatrist should have probably been involved.

Taylor

Thanks for the chapter. It's nice.

Taylor

Thanks for the chapter. It was nice.

Joe

:/ hmmmm kid cant give consent...its prolly in character though

buca117

*Sigh* Once again, Selkie jumps head first into a topic without giving it the proper gravitas. Just... Please don't have her open a sex change clinic. I really enjoy Elaine as a character, and her adventures on the whole, but I've dropped this series for swerving into oncoming traffic thinking it would survive fine before. My two cents: the reason the US has a drinking age of 21 instead of the more common 18 is because scientific literature indicates that the brain isn't done developing in most people until that age. Rather than argue about whether to get the chef's opinion, can we please agree to wait till the cake is finished baking before cutting it up?

Drake_Azathoth

I'm just a bit bemused by people jumping on the sex change thing and brushing over the many, many alterations that Elaine made to people's biology for the purposes of sex without any criticism. I mean hello, in the real world, we would not offer to give somebody tentacles or an extended split tongue for sex as a surgical procedure without a shitload of psychological counseling and warnings as well, and it's a much less advisable and psychologically healthy procedure, but for some reason the TRANSITION is the controversial topic.

Anonymous

Although I somewhat agree about them being a kid and it possibly being a hasty decision, it's pretty well known that a majority of trans peeps do know when they're young. We don't let them start hormones and other irreversible changes until they're of an old enough age, precisely because we cannot rewind that. Magical society. It is reversible. Therefore the whole reason to not help kids out is basically a mute point.

bradyman50

It's because a minor cant consent. The rest is about adults doing things to their own bodies. The sex change was way more complicated than what she had been doing and done to an emotionally distraught child.

Drake_Azathoth

You have a lot more faith in the judgement of adults versus teenagers than I do, or more respect for laws that don't really apply in this setting. A lot of the protections in place for that kind of thing are meant to protect the medical practitioner from lawsuits as opposed to the teenager or whatever. Like, yeah, this is a teen, but it's not like a six year old asking to be turned into a tentacle person. If he regrets it later, so might the tentacle person, such is life.

bcdp

Just a try to clear up a few misunderstandings I read here: He didn't beat his head on the table to cause self-harm. His head was dropping on the table because he initiated a class change (in order to drop level). The fact that he instantely knew what to do to drop vitatlity and that Elaine wondered about him being stuck on class change, suggests that he already learned about and prepared for that possibility. So while it is still an action taken in dispair, it doesn't seem to be an ad-hoc or uninformed decision by the boy.
