This one might require a little bit of context

My plan for this month was to spend most of it focused on re-editing WARHOUND through RESCUE HOUND and getting them formatted appropriately for both e-book and physical releases. That's still the plan and it's under way, but earlier this week I woke up in the middle of the night and, in a strange state of mind, wrote a piece of flash fiction which (with the immense help of my friend Esme) I've edited into something readable. It uses elements from WARHOUND but doesn't directly fit in with any other parts of the story, and instead deals with some psychological elements that are a little close to home for me. It's quite rough and a bit personal, but I hope some of you will enjoy it all the same. Besides, it's not like it doesn't have mechs, a Handler, and a certain fixation on leather boots :)

Enjoy! And my thanks again to Esme. Content warning for derealization

Amazing work. So many bits that resonated in only 8 pages! My favorite is: “Pretense is a muscle. It only has so much strength to give.” You’ve got such a way with words 🤩

This might be one of the best meta discussions on why Mechsploitation exists and what we get from it that I've ever seen. I can't even explain what this made me feel without going to a deeply personal place. Suffice to say this rocked me. Thank you for sharing this. <3

AlwaysSunnyIGetItNow.gif Well actually not quite. And this genre definitely still isn’t for me. I require at least a crumb of optimism with long form stories and this is…not the genre for that. But I do get why people like it a bit more now. And as always the quality of prose is fantastic!

Woah, that's personal. Thanks for sharing... And shit, I can relate with some of it, being trans and all, they brutal way you talk about it really got to me. 🫨 Happy Pride Month btw 🏳️‍🌈💜🏳️‍⚧️

The 'People Like You' line is going to haunt me for a while... this feels like such a succinct deconstruction of the whole series. It's whittled down to its beating allegorical heart. Just... ugh

There was more than a few lines in this that hit it especially hard, the last few paragraphs are just so perfectly relatable too

I love these kind of short stories 🩷 I love the imagery you're so fantastic at writing, I love how you make it all so solid in the eyes of the protagonist, fully convinced of what they're saying. Shorts like these feel they they encapsulate the feelings of the genre so well. thank you thank you thank you 💜

Oh this is distilled mechsploitation ambrosia, I adore it! The pilot's acknowledgement of the immorality of the handler's actions while also enjoying this reality that's been constructed for her? Good shit!!

Soofy

this is so painfully relatable, i adore it. thank you for bringing this into the world !!! love your work :D

Noelle

Just reread this, and I adore the extremely personal, subjective writing voice you’re using here. It feels so much more intimate than other third-person stories, which I think makes it hit that much harder. Fucking stunning as always, can’t wait to read what you put out next!

Will this story ever be released publicly? I want to share it with people.

Oh. I didn't expect to be so thoroughly seen. I don't really have the words, but this. It makes me feel not alone in ways I wasn't really aware I needed to feel. Thank you for writing this.
