I need more imposter movies in my life!! haha

The practical effects for this film are out of this world! (pun intended)

I am so impressed by this film. John Carpenter knows how to make a good film, there's no doubt about that.

It's so smart to have the movie start that way, yet there's always something suspicious about it. The Swedish team were not going to stray from their goal at all!

Let me know what other movies have amazing practical effects, please!

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much for being here and watching along with me!!

FULL LENGTH REACTION | The Thing (1982) [2025]

You need your own copy of the show to watch along with me though since this is solely my reaction. The video is there so you can have an idea when the scene changes in case you need to sync up, but it is HEAVILY blurred so I don't have any copyright issues. Enjoy!!

Will be watching later on today. Just wanted to give my initial view about the movie. Terrific. One of my very favorites. The one flaw Carpenter made, in my opinion, is the UFO in the beginning, before the "The Thing" splash page. If he didn't show that, then the lead up to finding the ship would have been even more intense and people wouldn't jump immediately to "Alien". I think the not knowing would have heightened the suspense / terror / paranoia.

Gonna watch right now, but to answer one of your questions, practical effects in this ballpark come in Hellraiser (Clive Barker) and lots of Cronenberg films like The Fly and Videodrome (my favorite of his). Edit after watching: Glad you really enjoyed this one. John's great with claustrophobic suspense so this was the perfect story for his style. As for "imposter films," you might want to check out Identity (2003) some time... I think that's the kind of thing you'd be into.

Thanks, Véro! 😱 Since you mentioned the artwork in which light emanates from the head of a silhouette... that was done by Drew Struzan who passed away two days ago of Alzheimer's (but it was only announced yesterday). Google him... he did some of the most well-loved posters and ancillary art of all-time... including for STAR WARS as early as 1978... but most notably in 1997 for the special edition re-releases of the original trilogy. 🎨🖌️🖼️

Looking forward to this reaction later today. The thumbnail for the video is hilarious;

"They're not Swedish, Wak. They're Norwegian." 😁

This is why practical effects are almost sexy to me. They don’t age - this movie’s effects will never not look good. Those wet, bloody tentacles along with creatures emerging out of creatures are peak special effects. They’re objectively there and your brain knows it. I also love the story - the thing isn’t a classic alien, but parasitic imposter which is totally unique to other alien flicks.

Watch 1951’s “The Thing from Another World” which is adapted from the same source material and predates it. This movie is really a remake, more precisely it is more accurate to the novella source material “Who Goes There?”

I really hope you continue watching Carpenter's filmography, he's got some real classics and some real cheese but I'm always entertained with his stuff. It'd be very cool to see what a reactor thinks about a director's body of work as they go through it.

for another movie with "practical effects" I'd say try Mad Max Fury Road if you haven't seen it yet. Groundbreaking epic movie in previous decade or two? 🙂 How do I say it... Fury Road walks in and astonishes the room.

Yes, I also like the 1951 version The Thing From Another World, a great film. Original black and white sci-fi. It's mostly a different movie but you can see certain things will remind you... of the other. But mostly the callbacks to the older version are minor like the written notes... which is barely anything.

Fun fact: even the title reveal at the start is a practical effect involving a fish tank, black paint, and fire!

Bubba Fett

While its mostly considered horror I like to think of this one more of a mystery, horror is almost always a comedy of errors but the truly great ones like this, are a battle of wits where several technical and capable individuals employing problem solving and overcoming their own fears to defeat the creature. Russell can manage a diverse type of roles, my 4 favorites are all very distinct but very fun characters. The thing. Big trouble little china that you mentioned, also statgate and Captain Ron.

Yes!! Miles (editor) sent me a video explaining how he did it 🤩 That is insanely cool

The mystery aspect is so nice!! The whole movie is planned so nicely to keep up suspense and keep us guessing who is human and who has been assimilated.
