The one we've all been waiting for!

I actually watched it twice because of all the negativity surrounding the episode. Things become a lot clearer to me upon rewatch 😅

There are some good moments, there are some... not great moments.

Overall definitely the weakest episode of the series so far 🤣

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much everyone for your support, you are the best!!

FULL LENGTH - Stargate SG-1 Season 1 Episode 3 - Emancipation

You need your own copy of the media to watch along with me though since this is solely my reaction. The video is there so you can have an idea when the scene changes in case you need to sync up, but it is HEAVILY blurred so I don't have any copyright issues. Enjoy!!

Yea, it's a typical Hollywood thing to forcibly insert social ideas when they don't work, luckily they only try this once more and that's it.

It had potential to be great from the concept but failed in the writing and execution. It didn't feel like earned liberation in its conclusion. There's also no way Captain Carter should have been so easily kidnapped given her obvious skills in the fight at the end.

Oh boy, this episode... It definitely has its issues. There's a lot to discuss and unpack here. The straight up bad: I agree with a lot of what you said. It was poorly written, makes our characters look incompetent and stereotypically chauvinistic, and is very on the nose to the point of insulting the audience. I would say it's partly a product of the time it was written but the show does so well in the other episodes and handling other topics it really does raise the question of why was this particular one so terrible? The just disappointing: That said, I try and find the good so I attempt to look at what they were trying to do and evaluate that from a position of huuuuge benefit of the doubt. I do think it touches on some very interesting ideas but it just handles it very poorly. To what extent are we just explorers and what level of interference should be bring? Carter actually says it very well when she brings up the special forces motto about liberating the oppressed. How do we balance our moral obligation to help people in places where they not only do not want our help, but will actively fight that ideal? For the people of this planet, it's implied that these laws came into effect to protect their people from the Goa'uld which is a very real fear, especially given that's how Apophis made himself known to our planet, by attacking and stealing people to use as hosts. How do we approach deprogramming that kind of fear? For the people of the planets we are exploring, these are not just stories passed down for generations they are active and ever present. They are clearly willing to fight and die for those ideas, and we cannot just go around gunning down entire planets worth of people to defend ourselves if they take it the wrong way. It's a fascinating idea and if done differently with better writers could have come across better. How do we weigh up our more modern liberal ideas against the practices of other worlds and historic cultures? Because unfortunately there are still areas of our world today where men want to control women and dictate what they can wear, what they can and can't do. I'll avoid going into specifics as I don't want to discuss any kind of politics, but I do like the idea of using other planets to challenge the mindsets some people might have here on Earth. Cultural stuff aside, I think this episode is also interesting to explore the dynamic of the team. We have a very clear chain of command with Colonel O'Neill and Captain Carter, but we have a civilian Dr Jackson and an alien Teal'c, neither of which are military. Earlier on in the episode we see an example of O'Neill giving an order that Carter doesn't like: play along. She does this - even at risk to herself and getting abducted - until finally she decides that its not an order she can follow anymore. O'Neill realises that this was a bad order to give when it becomes clear she's now in danger. Once reunited with the team she pushes back he listens to her and goes along with her plan. It's shitty writing yes, but it is showing character growth for them both. I think the thing that was most needed was an apology from Daniel and O'Neill that they messed up trying to get her to play along. It would help make them look like less like arseholes and gives the opportunity to bring a bit more diplomacy on how they want to run things on future adventures. On a much less serious note "here have a gun" turned out to be a very effective solution to the problem lol.

I always thought this episode suffered poor timing. A good episode 13, not episode 3. It seems like they tried, i get Daniel's point about archeologists, and even O'Neill's "you are today" but it was poorly handled and made everyone look bad rather than expressing the points of, they are going to experience cultures they dont always agree with, but executed in probabaly the worst way possible. Show needed to get some maturity before trying to get to this episode and it probabaly would have worked much better.

This is by far my least favorite episode of the whole Stargate Franchise. And I think it is also one of the worst rated ones.

FatLittleButterfly

i guess its not the strongest episode, but i enjoyed it. i feel they just had to showcase Carter badassery early on and introduce differences in cultural perspective

I feel no guilt for agreeing with the Fandom that this episode is potentially the worst episode. The silver lining for all the negativity around this episode, is that this episodes writer, well she would go on to write many of the shows more popular episodes. So dont feel too bad for her.
