This episode aired in August 2015, which means it went into production quite a bit before that, which resulted in numerous reviews noting that all the political satire was badly out of date, and of course just became more so over the following years. It now seems downright adorably naive for the show to portray Stan’s speeches as instantly turning everyone off. Luckily, the jokes are still well written enough that it’s a pretty fun experience regardless.

In the months before the season's second half, Alex Hirsch had been making a big deal that a Gravity Falls resident would die. And then it turned out to be the mayor. Unfortunately, he also found out in the same episode how this kind of trolling can backfire, as the fans became obsessed with how hiring the star of Welcome to Night Vale as a guy named Tad Strange had to be building up to some huge thing, and no matter how many times Hirsch insisted it was just a simple gag, they just assumed it was more of the trolling he'd become so known for.

YAY Can’t Wait To Watch Your Reaction Elijah 😁😁

Hilarious reaction as always! I was so psyched to see the notification! Fun fact: The title of the episode is a reference to politic thriller book The Manchurian Candidate, which was released in 1959, and it’s iconic movie adaptation from 1962. It’s about an ex-soldier who’s been brainwashed into becoming a sleeper agent. So the themes of mind control in this episode act as a shoutout just as much as it makes for a very cute pun on the title.

On the DVD commentary for this episode, they have to explain that back in 2014 when they wrote it, the idea of a politician whose entire candidacy is an endless series of gaffes was funny rather than depressing. Likewise for Irrational Treasure's plot based on an insane president. However, it wound up working out even better when in 2020, Alex Hirsch called into one of those "voter fraud hotlines" in character as Stan proudly reporting his own voter fraud.

Once you finish the series you should react to the Gravity Falls special “ Between the Pines” as well as the shorts!

According to some sources, in the first version of the episode, Preston Northwest was supposed to be Stan's opponent rather than Bud Gleeful, and I would have liked that version of events better, to be honest. Might have given Dipper and Pacifica another chance to interact. They changed it because they needed at least one Gideon episode in the season and were running out of options.

Ok. So the next episode is good, but the one right after is consistently viewed as one of the least-liked episodes. Mostly because it seems out of place story-wise and probably should have come out earlier in the season. It's not a - terrible - episode on it's own, though. So maybe if you go in knowing that, it'll make it less not great.
