Yeah you can tell by their outfits these are all set pre colour trailers.

Winter is in Mistral. Weiss was thinking of her sister (as in: having a flashback to Winter training her pre Volume 1) because she is currently on her way to find Winter in Mistral.

Weiss’ short is not just pre-Beacon it’s also pre-white trailer. She doesn’t have her scar from fighting the arma gigas (the suit of armor inhabited by a grimm called a geist that she can now summon) and more subtle she has her ponytail in the back instead of to the side Blake’s short has always been my favorite but Blake is my fav so that’s no surprise. The history between her and Ilia is so interesting and you’re right her VA Cherami Leigh does an amazing job. That’s now actually the second or third time Ilia has stopped herself from taking a shot at Blake. Also… Ilia: “Don’t be. I broke their teeth” Outro: 🎶SHOW THEM HOW YOU SMILE🎶 The song that plays in the outro is indeed ilia’s song it’s one of my favorites I wish it got featured elsewhere in v5 proper

LaviPastelQueen

God I love ilias va she does a really good job and I love another beloved character she plays Lucy from fairy tail 💝

EDHPlayer

It’s been implied that Illia’s parents were victims of that mining accident, hence her severe reaction to the news

I love that these shorts were also just a good excuse to get their V1-3 models into the Maya engine, and give us some little flashbacks to before they went to Beacon. Not an actual issue but the fact that you watched them out of order instead of the RWBY (or I guess WBY) order really messed with my brain. Again, it's not necessary, my brain just stuttered for a moment. Weiss Short: Path to Isolation (Mirror Mirror pt 0.5) is such a good song. Also, of the three I think this has my favorite fight choreography. It's very dance like. That one wide shot with her bouncing from Summon to Summon is masterful. Crwby were just flexing at this point. This seems to take place before even her initial color trailer where she fought the suit of armor (Arma Gigas), seeing as she doesn't even have her scar yet and she's still in her V1 outfit. Then there's just how she acts during the fight. She's stopping to admire her weapon, she's showing off a lot more than we've ever seen her do. Also, first time seeing Winter in the new engine. Yang Short: Showing off one of Yang's most fatal flaws, her willingness to throw herself in front of danger to protect her loved ones even if she gets hurt in the process. Taking the hits so others don't have to. Oh, my sweet girl. Her semblance is made for that, sure, but...even that has it's limits. Ignite is also just a banger of a song. A great Yang anthem. Blake Short: I've seen a lot of people comparing Ilia's story to that of a kid of two different ethnicities being raised as one or the other because they pass for one more than the other. I can't speak to this personally (I'm white as snow) but I enjoyed reading people's comments about this and how Ilia's story hit a chord with them back when this aired. Action wise this short isn't spectacular but this one really was just focused on giving us Ilia lore, and setting up the potential conflict for Blake. I, too, love Ilia's voice. Cherami does such a good job, and gives her this nice raspy quality. It's great. Alright, and with those lovely little slices of backstory out of the way, we're on to V5 proper. I'm very excited. So many moments I can't wait for you to see!

Blake: Why... why'd you join the White Fang? Ilia: Same reason as you. Blake: Butt? Ilia: Butt.

Also, the question of why Ilia fights when she could just pass as human reminds me of one of the X-Men movies, when Nightcrawler basically asks Mystique the same thing, and she answers "Because we shouldn't have to."

Also also, I love the contrast between Winter and Yang as older sisters: "I'm not always going to be around to save you" vs. "I've always got your back".

Glad you saw these, they really help you understand better the dynamics between characters going forward. Yang's probably had my favorite plot context, but Weiss's Has "The Path to Isolation" which is definitely one of my favorite tracks. Sounds like you enjoyed LVLUP! SO many people there. I was there with my friends from the RT community and it was crazy fun!

L Frances

Yeah, Ilia is definitely one of my favorite characters. Only really in play during the Menagerie arc, but you're starting to see why we love her so much. All the character shorts are good, but Blake's totally rules.

RetroBeastto

As you noticed in your reaction all of these shots takes place in the past. Weiss does have the scare over her eye, Yang still has her arm, and Blake is still apart of the White Fang. A fun detail to look into for Weiss’ trailer is that it takes place way before the white trailer in volume 1. You can tell cuz as mentioned she does not have the scare over her eye (as she gets that scare after proving her self and defeating the knight to leave home for Beacon) and her hair bun is perfectly centered rather than being lopsided. As always I love your reaction and I look forward to even more of them

Phoenix_mercury

It's *very* telling of the environments they grew up in, "save/be their for yourself" Vs "you have others you can trust/rely on"

RiekerVerse

A couple fun facts about Yang's short; the little thought bubble when Ruby mentions Crescent Rose was actually the RWBY Chibi model! Also, and perhaps more importantly- the reason using her semblance left her knocked out is because that was the first time Ruby had actually used her semblance (if i remember correctly!!)

Moonas

i will said it 31627847 time. RWBY music is copy right free just like in Helluva boss.

Gonna separate these based on short: - This short actually takes place before the White Trailer. If you look at her left eye, she doesn't have her signature scar. She also has her ponytail centered rather than off to the side, a change she later made in defiance (per the design notes in the art book). - Why do all of Weiss' songs go SO hard??? Path to Isolation draws on all the best parts of Mirror Mirror while being its own thing. - The animation hasn't truly met its peak but this is where you really start to see the team getting comfortable with Maya. The pacing is snappier and they go all out with effects. - Winter my beloved ----------------------------- - RWBY's little thought bubble with Crescent Rose is actually the model from RWBY Chibi - I can't see this little clearing without thinking of the JL movies. - Obligatory Goldilocks reference ----------------------------- - Blake's trailer is my favorite storywise. It's calmer than the other two for this volume but the beats are so much more visceral and Illia's VA absolutely sells them. - Seeing Blake's Beacon design in the new engine is still so jarring but I love seeing it with her ears out. We didn't get enough of it at Beacon. - I'm a Bumbleby bitch through and through but Blake and Illia's dynamic is so compelling (and reminds me a lot of Catra and Adora lmao).

No it’s definitely not copyright free?? I’m genuinely curious where you’re getting that information

LikeCat

It was when RT was still up, but now that VizMedia owns RWBY it is copyrighted.

these trailers are so good for adding those little bits to WBY as well as their relationships. like others said, it also shows off how the animation got better and better. as a huge Winter fan, I can only imagine the hype felt by those fans when the Weiss trailer dropped. seeing her again in the new model after her brief but iconic appearance at Beacon. (also need to go back and check again about the missing eye scar and ponytail...) another great nod to Yang and her Goldilocks allusion, as well as that contrast in sisterly dynamics. I have to recommend checking out RWBY Chibi some day because there's also a Chibi sketch that addresses those differences between the Schneesters and the Xiao Long-Rose sisters - ironically on similar terms XD yeah, Blake's flashback with Ilia is really crucial for what is to come in v5. it's also a nice layer to the Faunus subplot that gives a glimpse into what Atlas is like and a more personal example of the injustice that the Faunus faced. really excited to see later reactions to Ilia's storyline

Ray Knight

ILIA ILIA ILIA!!!!! ilia's VA, Cherami Leigh, did SUCH a great job with her character, and this little short is just the tip of the iceburg for the kinds of emotions and depths she gets to. can't wait for you to dive more into V5 and see more of her! she's my absolute favourite, and i LOVE that you picked up on the fact that ilia (once again) did not aim to shoot at/harm blake. this is for sure the second example we've gotten, and it just adds that much more complexity and makes the rest of the volume that much more rewarding since you've noticed that detail. can't wait for the continued journey into V5, probably one of my top three fave volumes!

Vivica the witch

Oh man a lot of rage for a man i whose name i will not say just boiled back up

Hollyhock

Ilia fan with rainbow pfp... checks out

Arashi

You mean Path to Weissolation. :P Though aside from backstory/character moments, the shorts were also used as an opportunity to animate their Beacon outfits in Maya. Mostly as Weiss and Blake's look weren't exact (off center pony tail and the bow) Really love the songs for this volume but Smile is just the best for it.

Tigerhawk

When's Mosco's reactions start?

Hi-Viz

Someone make sure she knows about the character short that comes before V6 when she's done with V5 as well

Ilia's theme being one of "passing" is, I think, one of my favorite examples in the show of demonstrating things through little details. She's not just an allegory for multi-ethnicity in a racist world, she's an allegory for being trans, closeted gay, or any other victim of an intolerant society. I keep coming back to this point, but she's the only member of the White Fang who wears a mask in Menagerie. Because if she took it off, people would mistake her for human and treat her worse. So, wherever she goes, she is either in human society wearing a metaphorical mask to pass as human, or in faunus society wearing a literal mask to pass as a faunus. She can't just be herself, wherever she is, because she will be judged and scorned by somebody. She is constantly under some form of stress, and it is starting to fray at the edges. If you recall, the thing that made her stab Sun was him saying "But she doesn't even look like a faunus." And she turned that shade of angry red she turned when she was talking about breaking the schoolgirls' teeth. He hit a sore spot, and she was compelled to lash out. To the Albain twins, she is a dedicated member of the cause, but she is clearly conflicted internally in what she is doing. As a result, she is a chameleon not just in her faunus lineage, but in her actions. in constantly adapting who she portrays herself as in different company in order to stay hidden. Some people thrive in that kind of environment, and become spies or celebrities, but others have it eat away at their soul little by little, as they can never be who they truly are.
