Great episode for the halfway point of season 6! It was hard to notice, but they revealed Astrid as trans in this episode. She is voiced by a trans woman named Boone Williams, just as Terry is voiced by a trans man Ben Callins. The representation in this show is so natural I love it. Expect some of the best content of the show in the next few episodes, looking forward to seeing what you think! ❤️🔥

This is in my top 10 fave TDP episodes (yay angst and Rayllum team-up!), so forgive me for the overly long Magefam comment I'm about to drop haha Viren and Soren’s scenes together in this episode are a very subtle arc all on their own! In their first scene, Viren immediately calls Soren “my son” – foolishly trying to appeal to a familial bond he has no right to claim (way to turn Soren off talking to you from the get-go lol). That conversation was never going to go anywhere because Viren was ignoring Soren’s pretty obvious cues that he /isn't/ ready for this chat Their second scene starts a little better since Viren focuses on /Soren’s/ reasons for being in the dungeon…but then he stumbles again by saying “your father” and Soren starts to shut down. What follows is a mixed-bag apology where Viren inserts Claudia into a speech that should really be JUST about Soren. It’s only when Viren genuinely compliments Soren’s growth and calls him “son” AGAIN that our boy breaks down. Because Soren doesn’t think Viren even LIKES him, and the other times Viren praised Soren (or quite frankly, anyone) was because he wanted something – so Soren sees the praise as confirmation that the ENTIRE apology is fake By their final scene, Viren has realised that grand and practiced speeches aren’t what Soren needs. When Viren tries to call him “son” again, Soren pulls into himself, and we get a closeup of Viren finally acknowledging that negative reaction. And then Viren says the only thing Soren actually needed to hear: that the years of mistreatment weren’t his fault. Even if Soren never speaks, visits, or acknowledges Viren’s existence ever again…at least he’ll have that verbal assurance that he wasn’t a failed son

As for the other half of the episode...love Kosmo and Astrid (more trans rep yay), love Callum conspiring to help Rayla's family, and love that Rayla told Esmeray what Ethari told her back in S3 when he gave her his pendant

Speaking of Viren, you should do plenty of vocal warm-ups before next episode. No reason... Not only is Astrid canonically trans, but Kosmo looks like he may have vitiligo. Subtle representation all around! One episode closer to the wedding... make sure you RSVP! What gift are you bringing for the queens to be?

The scroll in the end credits was the invitation to Amaya and Janai's wedding that they sent to Ezran, hence the very familiar flower on it.

"Still not caring for Viren though" honestly, same. He can crawl into the corner of his cell for all I care. The ending with him being like "you'll nevrr control me again" like he didn't WANT to interact with Aaravos was kinda awkward. I get they're trying to build a 'he was manipulated as well' but considering his past, I don't see much of that. Their relationship 100% started out mutual and not one being mind controlled. Unlike, you know, his kids who were emotionally manipulated into following him. Oh boy.

Nah my eyes were at the cusp of getting watery with the final Viren scene, if I were watching on my own, I definitely think a few tears would've come out. I wouldn't be surprised if they did when I first watched it, but that's so long ago I can't remember. I don't know, I get the criticism and I agree with some it, and I see how it's not good enough for everyone, but despite that I've always liked his character, from the very beginning as a villain, and now in his... not redemption... but realization arc, and the way they've portrayed him since he left Claudia just works for me. Like I feel the emotions and I see him as a changed man. Also I just really liked how Viren's approach evolved in each scene in this episode. I'm not sure if the writers are gonna manage to make you *like* Viren, but I think you might accept the way they're handling him post-Claudia. Honestly I hope so.

I read this in a comment on a previous episode, and damn, I never would've realized by myself lmao (just like with Lest from Arcane). Tbf it wasn't addressed directly and as clearly as with Terry... not that I realized that on my own either, wasn't very aware of trans and queer stuff back then.

Same. I remember watching it and just getting... Emotional? I don't say that I ,,liked" Viren's character that much (being a ,,generic villain" and all), but THIS scene in particullar got some pretty heavy emotions out of me... That I never thought I would feel for his character (at all). Nor did I thought they would SHOW how he is after leaveing Claudia (as much as they did - not a complaint btw)

SauceyRed

Yeah, the emotions were strong with Viren in this episode haha

What would it be like blindfolded my whole life and then the first things I see being the stars/Milky Way? I think I'd cry, probably, it's a beautiful moment after all. But then I'd be wayyy more invested in discovering what everything/one looks like (myself included) and taking note of details that I wouldn't have noticed with touch

So much grief could’ve been saved if Viren just got into community theatre instead of dark magic
