When lauren faust, creator and designer of the series, talked about mlp:fim she said that this wasnt a childs series, it was an "all public series", meaning the target audience wasnt children but rather anybody to enjoy. And she nail it since most of the fans were adults, and mostly men, and not in a bad way. A lot of adult men, me included, enjoyed the series. The topics, messages and humour it has make it very unique, and there will be at least a song every 2-3 episodes, so watch out for youtube

EEEE YIPPEEEEE IM SO HAPPY!!!! Okay so back in 2015 I was still in a toxic mindset of girly things are stupid and dumb. Then one day I was on youtube and I saw the thumbnail for the season 3 premiere, and I won't spoil obviously but it looked EPIC! And so I clicked on it out of pure curiosity and within the first minute, there appeared to be a very epic NOT GIRLY AT ALL set up for an exciting PLOT! So I watched it and I fell in love with it and then Pinkie Pie herself basically dropkicked that toxic mentality I had out of me right in the face. She became my favorite pony and I no longer hate the color pink thanks to her. All this is to say is that this show IS AMAZING!!! It IS girly at times but not so much that it's annoying and patronizing. These girls can kick ass and the writing is amazing for most episodes. Hope you stick along for the ride!!!

Glad you saw that Applejack and Rainbow, and also Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy, share the same respective VAs, but it actually goes deeper than that. For instance, Mayor Mare (the Mayor of Ponyville) has the same voice actress as Spike (who yes, is voiced by a woman), and also, Rarity's voice actress also voices Nightmare Moon/Princess Luna and Applejack's grandmother: Granny Smith. Also, fun fact: Ashleigh Ball, who voices both Applejack and Rainbow Dash, has gone on record saying that she ships the two characters she voices. And yes, people ship the main girls with each other a lot...with Rainbow Dash in particular by far being the most shipped character in this show. She has been shipped not only with all of the other main characters, but a lot of other characters as well, and it lead to the joke in the fandom that she's been shipped with "everything but the kitchen sink"...which of course lead someone to write a fanfic where Rainbow Dash literally fell in love with a kitchen sink...it was weird.

Hearing Elijah is a combo of Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie... this fills me with boy joy and dread, there is no middle ground, and this speaking as an Applejack-Fluttershy combo as I am both very practical but also suffer from crippling anxiety and shyness around new people

I’m glad Mosco told you to give it several episodes. The pilot episode really isn’t that representative of the series as a whole. They tend to be much more slice-of-life stories. But I think you’ll find that works in its favor. Also, it can be argued that there is more gay in this series than in She-ra. It’s a lot more implied than overt, but it’s there. 🏳️‍🌈

It seems to have died down a bit since the show ended, but while it was running, the fans had a level of devotion that honestly kind of scared me. For the biggest example, the party at the end of the first episode has a gray Pegasus in the background who was given crossed eyes just as a mistake in the animation, which took off into the fans giving this "character" who they named Derpy Hooves an entire personality and backstory and often treated her like she was just as important as the main cast. And you could count on any other background character with an eye-catching enough design to get similar treatment.

You know what's crazy about this show, this show was made and meant to be for little girls, but for some weird reason no one can explain, it was a big hit for young adult to regular adult men, and then there is a huge fanbase within the military, at least when I was in there was, we had a Sergeant in my Squadron that, you mention anything MLP he would just start talking all about the lore and everything, not sure if it's still like that now days or not, also there is a documentary on the bronie fan culture, check it out on your own time, it's very interesting.

Some have explained it, I will try to give a very short summary of those explanations. Basically: men, especially young men, feel deprived of friendship and intimacy and MLP helped them to unlearn a lot of toxic mindsets that were causing their feelings of isolation as well as teaching them to be more accepting. MLP gave them a connection where they felt safe to express their feelings in a way men, unfortunately, don't usually get to and taught them that flaws can be forgiven as long as you're actually trying your best. (It also provided many guys some really close friendships they may not have felt they could pursue before) Side note: a really sad, but cute, story I recently saw on TikTok was a single father went to a toy store to get MLP toys for his daughter and saw a little boy that was there being quiet, this grown man noticed this and spoke loudly to his daughter about the names and stories of the show and said that the little boy had asked if he liked it too, the boy almost started crying with joy that an adult man also liked his favorite show after hearing "yeah, Sunset Shimmer is my favorite". That man had grown up watching MLP and was rewatching it with his daughter, but he saw an insecure little boy and did what he could to make him feel safe, and I find that story so sweet😊

Welcome to the herd, as they say. I agree on the similarities you & Mosco mentioned, but I also think Mosco shares some of Twily's organization/paperwork skill set and her determinize to analyze & solve mysteries. There are a lot of layers to all our featured ponies that will come out as the series develops. And as episodic as the show is, there is growth and development in the characters (and the larger world) from one season to the next.

I do say your Elijah if this first two episodes were awesome to her? Then she is going to get an absolute kick out of the whole series. Coming from someone who was a fan of this show from start to finish. Owns merchendise and comics and a proud "Brony" as the male fans were called of this masterpiece Elijah is in for a great time that I cannot wait to see each episode :D

I, too, didn't think I'd be watching this show. After all, previous versions of MLP were practically the definition of "engineered cutesy-poo for single-digit-aged girls". But stuff started filtering across my feeds, and a friend got me to watch the Season 2 trailer. And afterward, my first thought was "Goddammit! I'm going to end up watching this thing, aren't I?" Eeyup, I ended up doing so, all 9 seasons. It got my old D&D "fictional world-building" juices flowing again.

This is a show that just gets better and better, especially as Hasbro let the team have more and more creative freedom over time. Not only do Rainbow Dash and Applejack share a voice actress, but so do Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy. Now that is some range. My headcanon is that Spike transcribes Twilight's letters as his writing practice since he doesn't attend school. edit: Also, the show doesn't keep the most accurate credits at the end of each episode, such as the VA for Nightmare Moon voicing multiple named characters.

I remember first watching this series ages ago. It is very wholesome, but it can be VERY SLOW sometimes. I mainly watched for Discord as well as the Equestria Girls series. Although I do recommend you keep watching, there are a lot of high quality episodes, movies, characters, and relationships to see later on.

/)*(\ Welcome to the herd!!! So, I checked and MLP came before RWBY by around 3 years (MLP FiM is 2010, RWBY is 2013). Then, when you mentioned your love of raspy-voiced women, you mentioned Buttercup, which I assume is the one from the Powerpuff Girls. Well, it might interest you to know that this iteration of MLP was created by Lauren Faust, the wife of Craig McCracken (the creator of the PPG) and she also joined the team working on that show in 1999. Additionally, the voice of Twilight (Tara Strong) was the voice of Bubbles (among many, many, MANY others, such as Raven (Teen Titans), Miss Minutes (Loki), Harley Quinn (a lot of the animated Batman series (and video games), Timmy Turner (My Fairly OddParents), and one of the Ember Island Players (specifically the actress playing Azula) in one episode of Avatar The Last Airbender, to name a few). The rest of the voice cast is also super talented, but this comment is already long enough!!

i played/mastered a whole 7 years campaign of d&d thansk to this show, and was ambient in 1000 years before the series since in the series they always say "1000 years ago blahblablah" so we played there, the 3 players from lv1 to lv20, full pony mode using lore of the series and from the fandom, including fallout equestria and some comics and even doctor whooves, we used dnd5e with custom races skins and custom logic, like ponys using crossbows and have to go on the fly with "hands" logic... a player played a griffin so was the only one with hands, funny stuff, the lv21 boss was bill cipher trying to enter their realm

I think MLP:FiM is an important landmark in both TV shows and fandoms. It's not the first show for little kids that has been enjoyed by adults. But it's one of the first that's been openly ACKNOWLEDGED at having a wider fan base than it's target demographic! And I also think it's individually important to accept that just because a show was made for "little girls," doesn't mean it can't have realy effort put into it!

I also added this comment on your girlfriend’s post, but my childhood friend and younger sibling and I all decided which pony we were as kids. My childhood friend was Pinkie Pie, my younger sibling was Fluttershy, and I was Applejack. Pinkie Pie was code for my childhood friend’s ADHD, (ironically, though, we all have ADHD lol) Fluttershy represented my younger sibling’s kindness and love for animals ig, (I personally feel like I fit both of those categories somewhat better, but I didn’t say I was Fluttershy because I’m definitely not shy. I just can’t always read social cues and hate small talk.) and Applejack’s honesty was code for my autism. We all turned out to be neurodivergent and queer after having grown up watching this show but no surprise there
