So, before we started using the word “gay” in Portuguese, the term used for homosexual men was “transviado” (meaning deviated/queer), eventually this was shortened to just “viado” (which used to be a slur but has been reclaimed like queer was in English). The thing is, viado sounds exactly like the word “veado” witch means “deer”. The second part of the story begins with a kind of (now) illegal lottery called “Jogo do Bicho” (animal/critter game). It’s basically a lottery, started at the Rio de Janeiro zoo to raise money for that institution, where you bet on one of 25 animals, all of them numbered. It happens to be that animal 24 is the deer. So the number 24 became associated with deer and with gay people by proxy.

Straight men here are weirdly reticent to use 24 in anything (fragile masculinity am I right?). For example it’s common for people to get 23+1 candles for their 24th birthday instead of 24 ones (I’m planning to get a 24+1 this year though hahahaha)
