That orb was the Eye of Sauron. Also, this episode is non canon, it's mostly just a fun anthology episode. So none of the stories actually happened canonically, not even that questionable thing at the end. But I know you'll absolutely love the next episode. Things start picking up again.

Oh yeah, this episode is definitely one of my least favorites of the entire series. I also never really liked the way they constantly have Dipper by himself with no friends and being constantly bullied by other characters. It actually drives me crazy
