I got a lot to say about this episode that ill put in multiple different comments but I'll start with saying that Koichi's VA killed it this episode love the knowing his place scene and the making up for with sheer force of will lines can't wait to hear how he does when the series gets more intense!

Mjw

these are some comments I saw on the Youtube channel Blindwave that I thought you should see @zaxzumu4605 said: So, I'm gonna give some manga context to the Enigma character since their introduction was apparently skipped in the anime. (No real spoilers apply unless you were going to read the manga AFTER watching the anime). In a .5 side chapter a little earlier into the series, a giant figure was seen appearing in the Narahuta neighborhood, and the Vigilantes sprung to action, attacking what they thought was another instant villain about to wreak havoc. As it turned out, Enigma was a new hire to team Idaten who is new to the area and was using her gigantification quirk to see over the buildings because she was lost and couldn't find the agency HQ. The Vigilantes apologized for the confusion, Enigma was chill and forgave them, and then she occasionally appears whenever Ingenium's team shows up from then on. @ROADRUNNER-fq1do said: It’s nice to finally acknowledge that the Ida brothers quirks run on fuel in the form of juice, grape juice for Tensei and orange juice for Tenya (the latter revealed in the School Briefs novels) @Bell-hj3zc said: In the manga Ingenium is confused as to why Koichi got sent as backup and the crew chief (the big guy koichi talked to before his mom hit him for interfering with the pros) tells ingenium that koichi seems to be faster than the rest of the sidekicks of their team and you can see said sidekicks being sad and sulking in the background as a gag @HaydrogenBomb said: So, once the cat bus hit the interstate, Ingenium's team told him he had five minutes till the bus went off the road. I timed it, and it actually did take that long in the episode for the bus to reach the end of gap on the road. That's already some great attention to detail, but the fact that the reason for the gap is the kaiju-type villain from last episode wrecking the interstate. @Bincone replied to him saying: Many many people who read both MHA and Vigilantes start to finish, say Vigilantes has the better writing and world developing of the two.

Mjw

So the cat...is it a human or an animal because I thought only humans could have quirks because they evolved to develop them or something, and I don't think we ever see an animal with a quirk in the main series and I feel like we would like a pro hero anime of some sort actually never mind I just remember Principal Nezu exist Lmao

Mjw

how do you think Koichi's new ability works is it like Iron man or more like how his quirk normally works where he kind of put some sort or accelerated force from his palms and feet?

Mjw

what you were saying about Ingenium recognizing Knuckle when he had the cat toy it was most likely just him being surprised to see the East Naruhata vigilante not him know her personally because then we probably would have gotten a reaction to Ingenium seeing him in the Ingenium episode

Mjw

I don't think Koichi was really underestimating himself I think he's just gotten that much better at using his quirk since it has been a few months since the start of the show I think.

Mjw

Now we finally have a reason on why stain attacked Ingenium...he littered. that villain! (this is my last comment...probably)

I lied one more I makes since what his mom did, not the way she when about it but having to watch you kid be able to fly before he walks and not being able to do anything is probably terrifying, like that might be one of the worst things you could have to go through as a normal parent who is not a pro and didn't expect their kid to have a powerful quirk, thinking about him flying an accidently turning off his quirk and hitting his head on the ground is a nightmare and would stress me out sooooo bad

I'm guessing it's the same thing he's doing on the ground but more refined to the point where it can work on particles in the air. It reminds me of Toph in ATLA with her power expansion

Yeah even without a quirk it's tough, like thinking about what Deku's poor mom has to go through for example, but for Koichi to be able to fly as a baby is extra bad from the beginning

Mjw

Enigma, along with Ingenium's other side kicks were fan designs.

I loved this part in the manga. If you can recall, Koichi talked about wanting to be able to fly or soar through the sky back in episode one when he was watching Pop's first show. But also, this adds another layer to the creative complexity of Koichi's quirk ability and application. He's able to slide and glide onto surfaces, which gives him great mobility options in general, alongside his maneuverability with better turning compared to Ingenium's extreme speed and poor turning ability from the Engine quirk. He can now float, which may come in handy later in the series. This is all just ONE quirk, btw. Koichi doesn't have multiple quirks like OfA like Deku does or Shoto's Half Hot/Half Cold being technically 1 quirk but 2 different powers. It's also worth noting that Koichi's quirk still isn't even combat oriented! I think that's one of the things I appreciate more about Vigilantes compared to MHA. It's a different way to tackle a problem than how the main cast would.

There's a nice supplement to one of the big messages of the original. Especially in recent seasons there's been the idea of "you can play your part no matter how 'big' that is and it's still heroism." That was previously often represented with non quirk elements of life like technical ability and business school stuff. But we could also keep it within the quirks themselves and make it a question of, well maybe your quirk is actually way better than you even thought if you actually just pushed it to its limits, in conjunction with your individuality. Or something like that. I have to think about it 😂

nezu was specifically stated in MHA that he was a normal mouse with a quirk that makes himm smarter than humans. so animals can have quirks.

They also mentioned it was a result of humans experimenting on him. And given that we know that All for One is involved with the Trigger stuff, I assume either he gave the cat a quirk, or if that didn’t work, then it was probably a result of the doctor he works with.

I keep noticing that the dub doesn’t translate text for some reason, like Knuckle’s business card this episode. If you’re ever curious about the translation, it should show up if you just switch it back to the sub for a moment.

Maybe this is a bit too personal but the Mom discussion here brought to mind how complicated but wonderful Mom’s are most of the time. I have a complicated relationship with mine as she wasn’t a great mother for most of her life but recognize she did her best with what she had. Since she died two years ago (doing something really heroic when an active shooter came to her work and saved a unknowable number of lives) it’s really made me rethink how often even some of their worst or most harmful actions come from this really powerful need to protect. I don’t know… as I get older (36 soon) I just appreciate them more and more…. and totally understand more how precarious of a line it is they walk as mothers.

The iida family using juice for fuel has been seen in the show as well. Tenya can often be seen drinking orange juice while his brother seems to drink grapefruit. Kinda funny how some quirks can be fueled through external means like momo eating more to use lipids for creation.

Wow, I don't know what to say! I'm very sorry to hear that. Parenthood definitely isn't easy and the more I think about it the more it sinks in. Imagining myself as a parent now, could I really do any better? Especially given that so many choices are either a tradeoff between things that could either be good or terrible depending on how the child interprets it? For example finding the right balance of fostering autonomy and being protective? It's not an enviable position to be in. And in a certain way of looking at it, your child's success means them leaving out into the world. I went from being very fixated on my parents mistakes when I was in adolescence to being in awe of what they managed to do right given their unique challenges.

Ik it's not that deep, but something about Koichi's mom pissed me the fuck OFF this episode 💀. Whether it's the constant belittling, the slapping, or the fact she didn't say a single even halfway positive thing about her son the entire time, she just came across very grimey. Idk maybe she'll be better later, but currently I see 0 positive traits in her 😭
