Suki

Fruits Basket was my childhood, and the first manga I had ever read! I watched all of the original 2001 anime, but I wanted to wait until the 2019 anime finished before I would watch it (which it just did!)

Janelle

God I’m so happy you’re starting this! Really excited to hear all your thoughts on show!!

Athena

This anime is ranked number one for most episodes to make me cry lol

Alyssa Callahan

Ohhhhh my god I'm so excited for this one! When I first read Fruits Basket, I wasn't expecting much, but it really captivated me. It can be silly, and it's definitely a product of its time, but it's heartwarming and sweet. I hope it surprises you too!

benj

Please Please Please watch this lmao. I promise, the pay off is truly incredible. It is rare for any romance anime, let alone one this underwatched, to get a full 63 episode adaptation. Similar in length to shows like ATLA and FMAB, this show is truly in the respective tiers of those giants when it comes to quality within the romance genre. You will absolutely relish in the deep character analysis, constant real life struggles, and refreshing new content that just hasn’t existed in the shows you have watched so far on the channel. I recommended this show for you to watch 6 months ago and truly did not believe you would ever watch any of it. Obviously this pilot is you just trying it out, but man would it be worth it to do the full series. I know it would be quite the dedication for the potential drop in views though.

Arnav B

Haha I haven't heard the dub of this before but why does the va of Yuki Souma sound like a supervillain lmao

benj
>>64413811

oh god he’s watching in dub? yeah definitely gonna have to say this is a must watch in sub like the majority of animes edit: oh god dub shigure is so far off its cursed

BotheredAsh

So Tohru Honda is played by the ever amazing Laura Bailey, who also played Lust in FMAB. And Yuki Soma is played by Eric Vale who you will know from MHA as Shigaraki.

Megan

I really hope you end up continuing with this series! Tohru is probably my favorite protagonist ever. She’s genuinely kind, optimistic, and hardworking yet has realistic flaws. All characters in this Fruits Basket have so much depth and nuisance. Season 1 is amazing on its own but the drama and plot really get taken up a notch in season 2 and 3, as show eventually touches on some heavier tropics. Every character you saw in the outro will get introduced eventually with their own arc, dynamics, and backstory. I know you’re not very in to romance but I have a feeling that if you continue, at least one of the many couples that develop in this show will catch your eye.

benj

11:55 Yes, dub Yuki is VERY creepy lmao. Real yuki is quite different.

Megan

Tohru, Yuki and Kyo are all first year high school students and 16 at this point. Shigure is 26.

To be honest, I personally prefer this adaption in sub. The content just sound a lot more genuine in Japanese than in English. The first anime was ok with the dub but this one is just a lot more in sub.

Nick

I really was expecting this to be pure slice of life, nothing crazy going on. And then the dude turned himself into a cat. Funniest shit I've ever seen

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

Okay Time to check this Show out with you, I really doubt it’s gonna be my thing but I’m excited to try it with you anyway!

>>64415626

Update: I Lovehate recognizing a voice actor and then trying to figure out who it is for the rest of the entire episode xD But it seems really chill so far! In a good way. I hope the Romance is gonna be good, I usually dislike stories focused on it.

Meili

Fun fact: The English VA for Tohru also voices the English VA for Lust in FMAB

ArmdVctr

Alex: "Tohru needs to reach out"

eli_lane

I'M SO EXCITED! I really hope you continue to watch this one, Furuba was one of my first animes and it has forever since been near and dear to my heart. I admit I'm partial to the sub like a few others, but honestly it'd be enough of a treat for you to pick it up at all I won't complain either way. The interactions and storytelling are super fulfilling, and I can assure you no other anime has ever made me sob so much, lmao.

Francesca White

wow as someone who's seen the whole series it's so weird seeing this very quaint and cutesy first episode, knowing how deep the series gets

ArmdVctr

Alex reviews Fruits Basket episode 1. I'm breaking down within the first few minutes.

ArmdVctr

Don't worry about the boy harem. Romance is not the focus of this show. This show is a masterpiece! I hope Alex continues it. So much philosophy!

MikeWest

Y'all trippin

Brimmy

AHHH WHAT I DIDN'T KNOW U WERE DROPPING THIS NOW HO MY GOD ITS 5 AM BUT I'MMA WATCH THIS NOW I'M SO EXCITED I'm grinning oh god i've not watched this dubbed at all the fucking nostalgia omg HANAJIMA (Hana a.k.a wave girl) IS MY FAVORITE I LOVE HER SO MUCH They kept Kyo and Yuki's original VA's AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH oops got Haru confused with Hatori that's a first XD also i know others will tell u but there's no harem here there's 1 person for her and that's it o.o

Kollie123

Hearing a lot of Va I like in this already lol, I’ll stick with the series if you watch it

FiioArt

March Comes in like a Lion is another really good show that is emotionally that is not something you'd traditionally watch that is along these lines emotionally. I think you should check it out too!

Gabriela Benavides

im happy ab this!!! eng dub isnt too bad but yea the sub is sm better

malikparah

A lot of the dub cast came back to reprise their roles from the 2001 version including our main trio although funnily enough you’ve all mainly heard them as villains. Tohru is lust, yuki is kimblee/shigaraki and kyo as Barry the chopper/principal nezu

DennisAnimeFan

Your commentary is great and valuable, as always. However, not being a fan of the original adaptation, this pilot didn't really manage to change my mind so far. Really not that much of a fan of this. If you do continue this, I'll be sure to give it a chance for a few more episodes, though!

as someone who loves this series, i totally get why you feel that way at first. This series is a lot like ATLA in that season 1 is very lighthearted and not as amazing as seasons 2 and 3. if i were you and i wanted to get into the series, i'd try and get to episode 7. that's really where you get the first somewhat glance at where the series can go. it's really hard to explain but seasons 2 and 3 get into such deep topics and aren't afraid to get dark, it's all about overcoming trauma/ptsd. the portrayal of mental health is just unlike any other series i've seen, and i think that's why the 3rd season is now the 4th highest ranked series of all time on MAL

Lysieblu

I'm glad you're watching this series. It has a lot of themes that I would love to hear your take on. It gets deep and you're kinda picking up on it already which is why I enjoy your reactions.

Derrick C. Shields

One of the all-time greatest dubs ever, full stop. This and Metal Gear Solid are what I credit for making me appreciate voice acting and why I bother to try to remember actor names, best I can. Well, the 2001 version, but it's a nearly identical cast. Oh, and I think the story and characters are pretty cool, too. Probably helped that I experienced the story at 15 (perhaps the *perfect* age for this story), but I really do think it's an amazing thing that only gets better the further you go.

Jafeth Díaz

I really hope you keep reacting to this show! I’m only halfway in the second season, but I can say that regardless the genre or demography, this is a really good story and cast of characters, and a must watch for sure.

Kiwee

I love this show and the themes it touches on, I’m happy your watching it! :)

benj
>>64431213

if this is one of the greatest dubs ever than...I guess to each their own but Yuki sounds like a serial killer in this episode (literally voiced acted by Shigaraki lmao) and Shigure is a totally different person giving off a totally different vibe. Also wouldnt the OG VA's grown like 15 years since the OG show? They prolly shouldnt be voice acting 16 year old characters anymore it doesnt really sound right imo

Katrina Vieira

I think Fruits Basket is just the right show you’ve been looking for. You said a while back that you wanted a show with romance/slice of life, but I know you’re not too big on heavy romance, so this one is perfect for you. It not only touches on romance, but it has rich character arcs that are well woven into the story (and don’t worry, there’s no harems!). It’s easy-going and relaxing, yet it captures your heart and makes you feel so many emotions. It feels like you’re there with everyone, getting to know them. And you’re only just getting started! I’m so excited to see you keep reacting to it.

Eddie

Lmao the dub is cursed.

benj
>>64440941

Seriously cursed dub. I was scared for Tohru the whole time watching being surrounded by all these creepy villianous men lol.

Jordan Runner

With a reaction series to an SoL/Drama like this my hopes for a Sangatsu no Lion reaction sometime down the road have been strengthened :D

Sage

I like this idea of reacting to first episodes. It's a good way to have a taste of knew shows without having to make a huge commitment. I never knew about this anime and might watch it myself now. And if you continue this I might find other things I like!

John Carrizales

Seriously You Sub Elites need to back off like ffs the Dud ain't bad at all. The Cliche of Subs always being better was probably true back in 2000 anime but the Dub Community hads Worked hard and has come ALONG way. This anime specifically was dub by Funimation and done very recently and they have a good set of VA's Employed like Christopher Sabat,Sonny Strait(Krillen from Dragon Ball Z,Maes Hughes from Full metal). Just because this is an interpretation you don't like of a character or show doesn't mean its wrong. You could even argue the original Sub version of the show isn't even the original interpretation of the show and that belongs to the Manga Ms.Natsuki Takaya own drawings and writing is what is the orignal. So please for the love of god just let Goodwin watch the show how he feels comfortable watching the show. And not just him but to all the other Dub watchers out there. I don't mean to bring drama about this but seriously guys we are all adults we should all be more respectful.

benj
>>64448266

Admitting that it is an interpretation and not the actual show or character is pretty much what anybody, myself included, is complaining about when critizing this interpretation (This dub). Why should interpretations/parody's be exempt from criticism? I don't really see how its disrespectful, at least not on the first episode when there's still a lot of time to change versions.

Sweetbun

So excited you decided to react to this show, Tohru is one of my favorite anime characters (obvi she is also my profile pic!).. The series gets a lot better as you go along. Whether or not you decide to continue with it right away, I'm glad you seemed to enjoy the first episode ^^

oragami53

This is so cool to see! My girlfriend turned me on to this show and now I'm a die hard fan!

Sean Silence

I love this show solely for Laura Bailey (the voice of Tohru) lol

Jamie Morgan

Oh no...I said I was going to end my Patreon subscription since you finished Avatar...and now you've started my favourite anime...welp, good thing I've got a load of overtime booked!

BubbleTea

I also really admire people who can see the silver lining in life. But also me... REVELRY IN THE DARK

Aura Y
>>64518036

Just because finances come into consideration, I wanted to say: I think he's only testing out the first episode for now, so it isn't guaranteed to continue immediately.

Jordan

OMG I WANTED TO ASK YOU TO WATCH THIS 😭😭 I EVEN THOUGHT YOUD REALLY ENJOY IT WHEN I STARTED WATCHING IT!! I CANT WAIT to hear what you think of all the life lessons in this show 😭😭

Rachel Keys

You can just tell from the first episode theres so much to unpack lmao I'm so excited to see what your thoughts are on the lessons and subjects they cover which get pretty dark. Welcome to Trauma: The Anime lol
