Time to get United States of Smashed

Jo

The best attack name ever conceived, for the record

benj

All Might became so American in this episode that he nuked Japan

Nick

I have never felt more conflicted in feelings than I did when watching this episode. Happy for all might, terrified for all might, love all might, sad for all might, terrified for deku, happy for deku, love deku, sad for de-

Chill Potato

Ah. We have arrived at season 3.

Josh

I think you kinda understood, but something that took me a few watches to realize... "I sometimes dream of you charging at me with your entrails strewn about" is a realization that even after AFO put that hole into All-Might's stomach, he still went after him.

agoodwintv

It's a lot to take in. The most glorious and painful feelings at once. It's like finishing a great movie or show and realizing it's over. Except way more than that lol

Kamolak

I think there is a difference between faith and trust, one relies on evidence where the other is based on nothing or in spite of evidence to the contrary

agoodwintv

Personally I think if you look deep enough everyone has beliefs that operate on a similar level, no matter what the beliefs are. If it's about evidence, how are we to be sure the evidence we have is our own and not something inherited (for example)? Maybe a better way of phrasing it is not to mention faith at all but just to look at it as a question of "what do we believe in," and "how conscious are we of what we believe in and where those beliefs come from?"

I think this episode speaks for itself, but it shows how much All-Might means to this world. He is the foundation, the symbol that the public looks to, the role model that heroes-in-training strive to become! The OST is so perfect this episode! I could listen to the "United States of Smash" track for hours straight!

Ned

Words can't describe how much I love all for one's theme.

agoodwintv

I'm repeating someone else's comment here but ever since I read it I like to imagine that background opera music is one of his quirks.

Kollie123

I like how much you honed in on endeavor needing all might to be strong, although I think you misread it a bit. He doesn’t need all might to be as strong as he is because of their rivalry, he needs it because without it he has to face the facts that he destroyed his family chasing this twisted desire, which I think is why we see the flashes of the family members hurt by his actions. And overall incredible episode though, welcome to the official turning point of the series

"To want to be something so bad it hurts." This is why this show has always resonated with me so much from the very beginning. The second episode in particular, where All Might tells Midoriya he can be a hero. People often like to joke about early Midoriya crying too much, but that scene always hit me hard because I never really got that kind of encouragement in my pursuits. It's made it feel like an uphill battle. I always wanted to become something, career-wise, that I could be proud of and not have to dread doing every day for the rest of my life. I eventually landed on becoming an artist, but it felt like every step of the way people were steering me away from it. Directing me towards getting a job with a pension, or becoming an accountant because I was good at math, or literally anything else as long as I could make a lot of money from it. My family didn't understand that I wanted to do something more than just clock in and clock out every day. I wanted fulfillment. It made it hard to find the willpower to work on my skills because it felt like I couldn't do it. Eventually I got a bit lucky and landed a job that gave me valuable experience, and now, almost 4 years later, I'm a working CGI Artist making pretty solid money. I've finally gotten to a point, recently, where I feel like my skills have developed enough that I'm actually happy with the work I'm producing, even though I still sometimes having trouble acknowledging myself as an artist even as I'm doing it professionally. Anyway, just figured I'd share that! This show resonates with me on so many levels, haha.

Brimmy

why do i have nothing to say about this episode? yeah it feels like a season finale but there's 25 episodes XD why can't i remember what happens after this guess i'll find out o.o oh wait i remember a fight o.o (omg i'm so excited)

Etsch

I enjoyed the show before but it was these past three episodes that made me fall in love with it. Best episodes in the series.

agoodwintv

Thanks for sharing! Congratulations on your success and not being deterred. I can definitely relate to those mixed emotions of joy and pain in pursuit of goals. There's the pain that comes from the uncertainty, the self doubt (especially with so many voices acting as deterrents), watching others who are already established do their thing and wonder if it will ever be possible for you, etc. And then the joy of taking things on to your own shoulders, seeing progress, and the love of the thing itself.

BotheredAsh

Ugh I love this episode. Also, the voice actor for Nana Shimura is Stephanie Young, who also voiced Olivier Armstrong in FMAB.

Sean D

I just noticed Scar in the crowd at 12:44

Jacob Keyser

This is my second favorite fight in the anime. gives me chills every time

Nathan

By uncovering All Might's "weakness", in a way All For One actually revealed his true strength.

hays collins

UGHHHH I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BIG FIGHT. Everyone knows what I’m talking about. SO PUMPED. but we gotta get through a couple arcs before that unfortunately. Let’s just skip the next arc haha

agoodwintv

That's a nice way of putting it. It was interesting to watch and realize that the part of his strength that resonates the most with me isn't his physical abilities

Christo Badenhorst

this fight was amazing but still only in my opinion landing on the 3rd most epic fight. season finale is my second and then next season there is a fight I'm not spoiling who fights but I cant wait. I absolutely became that persons number 1 fan.

Aidan Pullen

If anyone else here has read the Stormlight Archive, All Might telling All for One that he can't take away his concept of himself and his inner flame has the same vibe as "You cannot have my pain" Total chills. Super inspiring. Love it.

Vinicius Colucci

I love this episode so freaking much. All Might using his last sparkle of OFA to embody his image as the symbol of peace one last time speaks so much about his character. As Gran Torino said, THAT was his last job as a hero - not just beating AFO, but prevailing as a role model for others to look up for. When Horikoshi nails the writing, the dude sure knows how to hit the audience.

Xylen

"STAND UP AND SHOW THEM WHY YOU'RE BETTER!" If forced to choose, I'd give the edge to the subbed version of this show in terms of quality. But good goddamn, that line in the dub will never not give me chills. It comes across much clunkier in the sub (even though the meaning is still there).

Skyler Anderson

One of my favorite episodes of any anime ever. United States of Smash baby, man hit him with all 50 states. Also just a clarification, the media and everyone doesn't know All for One said Deku has One for All. And just the symbolism of the symbol being gone and being left to deku at the end AHH. I literally cried when I first watched it and almost cry everytime. I even cried again while watching this reaction. Can't wait for the future of episodes.

Stephen

RIP Goodwin's expectations of the show with yall's comments XD. I can't hate though, its all born out of love for the show. <3 Oh, all for one's face looks like that cuz all might basically pummeled it to shreds and its the result of whatever healing he went through. Might still be healing

Vinicius Colucci

Just to let you know: post-credits scene next episode!

Jupiterninja

Are they really putting All For One in a prison???? I mean I oppose the death penalty but there's no way there's any prison that can hold him right? That's like trying to restrain an armed nuclear warhead

agoodwintv

Lol yeah have they never seen a super hero show? Do people not need super hero shows because they live in a super hero world? Maybe that's why

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

Yeah, this episode has giant ramifications. I can’t wait until the end of the season and my favorite episode ever.

Sarah

Your analysis about how society has gotten so used to this was quite interesting. It reminded me of this Michael Hopf quote: "Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.".

Ice

nooo the next arc has a very important Bakugo's development

SirLagginton

"We got a four for one"... May as well make it an All for One ey? ;)

Acesaw

Yess, a fellow Stormlight fan 😁 And the way that MHA hones in on certain aspects of trauma/mental health, both in the second season and future seasons/manga, also gives me mild stormlight chills

Deerman

You mean PIECK noooo lmaoo

Ardawen

I had that last hero pose of All Might as my desktop background for months, i love it!

ComicalSkate

This quote right here is something I think about often. It actually gives me a lot of hope for the future. The way I see it we are coming out of the good times which made the "weak men". We are in for some hard times in these coming decades, but out of it I can see there will be "strong men" who can make times good again. One can hope at least.

benj

27:40 Yo Pierre you wanna come out here?

Burk314

This is important to state! The media captured the video, but not the audio. In fact, even the heroes that had been helping were blasted far enough away that they did not hear All for One's declaration about Deku.

Gernol

"Stand up and show them why you're better!!" you've gotta love endeavor. We're going to get more on him going forward. After all, with all might losing his power, Endeavor has finally risen to number one.

Gernol

Couldn't agree more. The dub can be a bit goofy at the best of times, but THAT line is so powerful.

Jack Cas

Deku's pain here is less about the shoes he has to fill and more about his personal hero ending his career. Deku is the first to realize that the worlds symbol of peace can't be that anymore.

Kamolak

I also always thought All-Might was saying now it's your turn to the viewers or other heroes.

Derrick C. Shields

I won't say exactly how, but there's a somewhat similar message in Fruits Basket related to your comment on how you "have to prove yourself to yourself" before you can begin to believe in hope. As much as we like to say "you have to love yourself first and foremost", self confidence can't come from nowhere; it has to begin from somewhere "real" before you really begin to believe it's true.

Derrick C. Shields

He kind of seemed to talk himself into that one, since he started on the tangent just before Deku starts crying, and then maybe thought the scene was confirming his idea. While I think he's 100% right about Deku "wanting to be something so much it hurts", I don't think that was the point of the scene where Deku receives a personal retirement statement from All Might...

kingafreund

I've seen this so many times already, but I still get chills every time.

Duopierce

I can't be specific by any means, but it's amazing how well you are able to call out things that are going to take place later in the the series, thematically speaking.
