This episode is a massive gutpunch. We finally get Tohru’s confession and it literally couldn’t be met with a worse reaction…Kyo’s rejection and than Akito showing up like she’s Mikasa/Eren with that DAMN knife 🔪

Nick

I watched from episode 5 to 11 last night... feeling broken. I don't know HOW people watched this week to week Still behind on videos, I have 8 fruits basket and like 9 MHA, something crazy like that lol

Akito about to tatakae her way into Tohru's back just like Kureno bro god save us all

Francesca White

this is literally so random and not relevant but yeah Kyoko and Uotani both dye their hair, it's common for delinquents in Japan to dye their hair blonde or orange/red

Mackenzie

I've been waiting days for this.

Francesca White

the FEAR that is struck in everyone when Akito shows up with the knife at the end

Francesca White

i might be wrong but i believe this is the highest rated episode on IMDB, and it makes sense, it really is a masterpiece. amazing commentary from u as always!

They just keep raising the stakes with Akito, it's such a beautiful and terrifying build and it just keeps going

cosmotron

If you watch the first few episodes with this knowledge, you notice the fact that Kyo can barely stand to look at Tohru. Even if the specifics have been repressed for a while, it was still something that contributed to just how unsettled he felt around her in the beginning.

raesh

I love this episode so much....it was 80% kyo monologue and self hatred...and our sweet strong tohru standing her ground...❤❤❤❤

Francesca White

so fun fact, in the manga translation, instead of kyo saying "i won't be disappointed in you/ i'm disappointed in you", he says "i won't be disillusioned/ now i'm disillusioned", and while i like both lines, since they're almost exactly the same meaning, the disillusioned line always hits harder for me. cuz with "disillusioned", it's like he's saying to Tohru "I thought you were a better person, but it turns out I was wrong about you". we saw that Tohru was struggling SO HARD with feeling like she's a selfish, bad person, and Kyo was able to say that he doesn't think she's a bad person for that. but now he's basically hurt her the worst way he could've. also fun fact, the word "disillusioned" was a HUGE meme in the fandom before the anime adapted the scene, because it was just SO EMOTIONAL lol. we who read the manga would often just say the word "disillusioned" or "i'm disillusioned" and everyone would know the inside joke lol

Geneva The Weeba

Kyo: So, uh, Tohru. Ya know, we've got something in common. Tohru: What is it? Kyo: I killed BOTH of our moms! Crazy, huh?

Megan

This whole season is punch after punch. This is definitely one of my favorite episodes. Interestingly enough, I wasn’t huge fan of Kyo at the start of the show. His personality clashes with a lot my own personal traits and he reminds me of people in my life I have strained relationships with. That being said, throughout the series he has quickly become one of my favorite characters ever, not just in Fruits Basket. Even though I hate his reaction to Tohru’s confession because don’t want to see her hurt, it’s understandable. How can except love from someone as pure as Tohru when he hates himself so deeply. How can he possibly stomach the guilt of being responsible for the death of Kyoko when she was the most important person in Tohru’s life. This episode highlights his internal conflict so well. It’s just amazing writing.

Geneva The Weeba

Yuki continues his third-wheeling adventures, watching the love confession

benj

F U C K AKITO ALL MY HOMIES HATE AKITO sorry had to get that one off my chest, do not touch tohru or you will be severely dealt with

Megan

Tohru’s so strong because if I was in her position I would of fully fell apart.

Crystalrose

Yeah when you rewatch the show the first season will still be cute and fun but it will never be what you originally thought now that you've seen this episode lol

Ietseatapples

Im always interested in translation decisions. This may be small, but I always wondered how the anime would translate Kyos line this episode. The japanese dialogue (そんなん…幻滅だ…) translates literally to "I'm disillusioned." Genmetsu literally means disillusioned. I think funimations choice is easier to understand and makes the line far more straightforward, but loses some of the nuance. And I don't believe Kyo says "in you" at all in japanese. Hes more saying the situation as a whole is leaving him disillusioned. Idk, its interesting how such tiny language choices can change so much meaning.

Haha I like looking at it that way. Third wheel foreshadowing? And this is the third wheel climax?

Geneva The Weeba

Regarding what you said at the end, about Yuki chasing Kyo, my friends and I watched this episode together, and I was ugly sobbing almost from the outset. My best friend's solution (I love the guy, but he was nuts for saying this) was to narrate Yuki running after Kyo with "Kyo wait! You need to become a man worthy of being my step-dad!!"

Ietseatapples

I love how this episode reframes the bet between Kyo and Akito. When this bet is first shown in season 2, it seems earth shattering. But seeing the full picture, both characters are talking completely past each other. Akito wants Kyo to never defeat Yuki so she can prove to Ren that the zodiac curse and the bonds exist. And Kyo is looking for any reason to distract himself from Kyokos death, so hes kinda happy to find more reasons to hate Yuki. In that scene, neither Kyo nor Akito are thinking about each other at all

CRS

I love a late series ep that can recontextualize the whole show or a character in a way that has been well foreshadowed. This ep left me breathless.

Kotryna

At this point in the show, it's worth remembering that Shigure mentioned his plan could leave some people hurt, and he was willing to accept that consequence. God soup though! Man I just wish Kyo would GO FOR IT ALREADY... but to be fair, in a way I've been there too. You can rationalize backing out of a relationship you want, before it even starts. Just out of fear it won't work out. And that was a terrible decision on my end, but at least I changed my mind! Now let's go Kyo! Give in to loooooove. SO HELP ME-

Alyssa Callahan

I always think it's such a powerful moment when Tohru says she would disagree with her mom if she really said she'd never forgive Kyo. I don't think it's fair to make Tohru make that choice, but it's still amazing, nonetheless.

Chelsea leisle

Not so fun manga fact about this episode: the person driving the car had a heart attack and died, and that person is kakerus girlfriends father.

I was saying the exact same thing to my fiance the other day and thought I was sounding like a cazy person for being so crazy over word choice!

Trey Goldsworthy

God this episode hit home for me harder than most other pieces of fiction I've ever seen, I personally empathize with Kyo so much, a few years ago someone close to me died, and in hindsight I realized I could have done so many things to avoid it, I can't help but still somewhat hate myself for what I did/failed to do even if I am better than I used to be, moments like the scene where Kyo looks back on his younger selves and calling himself foolish and stupid for not taking responsibility and being self-righteous, the scene where he just stayed in his room wallowing in self-hatred and having my folks got me to a place where I could do something to help motivate and improve myself and get better. But even though I still haven't fully forgiven myself, because of the people I love keep loving and supporting me when I wouldn't have tried to keep going, and because of people like you who help inspire me to strive to do good and keep growing, staying optimistic, and hopeful, and kind no matter what I've been through or done. Sorry if this seems jumbled, but I thought of no better opportunity to talk about how much Fruits Basket has affected me, and a chance to thank you for watching this series and hearing your insights, and for helping me love this show all over again and for helping me look at the themes, writing, and characters in a different way.

Tracy McGill

It's sad that Kyo takes so much of this onto himself, especially in a situation where the choice is either exposing your cursed form to a load of "outsiders" or being unable to save kyoko.

Serralinda

I'm pretty sure Akito is drawn to Shigure in her desperation - she's at her breaking point here. Kyo's story is so sad because it all makes sense but I just want to shake him for blaming himself and running at this particular moment and then hug him to pieces and pat his head. While I sympathize with Yuki and a lot of the other Somas who have bad parents, Kyo and Rin truly are the most traumatized and broken almost to bits. Thank Kyoko (not "god" lol) that Rin has Haru and Kyo has Tohru (and Kazuma) because otherwise, those two would not make it to adulthood. Next episode, we'll revisit an inanimate character we havent' seen in a long time...

ArmdVctr

The cliffhangers are unreal!

Evalone

I have a real problem with the pacing of this episode. Since they didn't adapt Kyo's relationship with Kyoko before, they have to put everything now. And for me, it just draggs the episode. It's only Kyo talking, with lots of reuse of the same images twice. It's almot like nothing happen in this episode, and it doesn't help that it's uncomfortable thanks to Kyo's reflection. In the manga, it was a single chapter, so half a usual episode, or 1/3 in case of season 3. And I'm especially mad because, thanks to this pacing, we couldn't get the perfect cliffhanger for this episode. And maybe because I care more about Tohru and Akito's relationship than the classic love story that we know is gonna be resolve somehow. And I don't like that Tohru chose that moment to speak to Kyo. She knows he doesn't like rain. I don't know if it's for symbolic reason, him being the most honest when he's the most vulnerable, or just to add useless drama, but I don't like it. I won't say it was a bad episode, but even when it aired, it didn't match as well as the others with me. And the car thing is upsetting. In the manga, we never saw the accident, only the consequences. So, it was easy to understand how Kyoko was hit. There, it's almost goofy she went forward with everybody panicking around. And she has no real reason to be out of it for what we know. Could she be that worried for Tohru's test that she didn't pay attention ? Hard to believe for me. So yeah, even a fan can have problems with what they love ^^

And he never called her by her name until his true form, as if he for real didn't want to acknowledge the fact that she is that one daughter of woman which died "because of him". He really was scared

HarperBeeHave

Trauma? Let’s talk about that! *cue GMM intro music* Really tho, be forewarned this is about to be a whole ass book tbh and I may have to split it into parts because Patreon eats long replies sometimes. I’ll number them if that happens, though. *cracks knuckles* Excuse me while I take some deep breaths and use dark humor as a coping mechanism throughout this essay ‘cause like *finger guns* trauma, amirite? I mentioned in a previous post that I relate quite heavily to Rin, and that is true of Kyo as well, especially in this season. How this show handles trauma continues to impress me from one rewatch to the next. But I kinda want to go through and pick apart Kyo’s mind a little here. One of the biggest, most impactful things that I have learned from my own experiences with trauma and in therapy that changed a lot of my perspective, is that after enough sustained abuse we start to abuse ourselves for our abusers. This goes beyond learned helplessness, and into self-abuse. Sometimes it’s because it is all we’re taught, right? “Oh, every time something happens I get blamed and gaslit and abused, so therefore every time something happens it is my fault and I must be punished even if I have to be the one to punish me.” That becomes true to them completely. I think sometimes it can run even deeper than that, where with enough sustained abuse it becomes more than just what we know and they teach us to truly believe that we deserve it - and so, to us, we do. Even after we learn there are different options. Because of this, we often remain trapped by our abusers long after we’ve escaped. Additionally, I think particularly in the case of those who have survived abuse in their childhood. Oftentimes, without even being taught to, we make the things that happened to us our fault. There’s a degree of that which can be influenced by the abuser, but something I’ve come to realize recently is that it’s also sometimes a coping mechanism. We saw this with Rin, too. It’s there for Kyo though a bit less prominent, but I think we also have a tendency as children surviving abuse to blame ourselves for it not even because we can fix it, but because we can make sense of it easier. If my parents hurt me then I /needed/ to have done something wrong, otherwise my parents just don’t love me, otherwise the world is just chaos and I was born to people who only wanted to hurt me. And as sad as it can be, the idea that this abuse is somehow a punishment for a mistake we made is so much easier to cope with than knowing we live in a world we can’t survive independently in, let alone fix. And that leads to the two main extremes I have found we tend toward when coping with trauma: Either /everything/ is our fault or /everything/ is someone else’s fault, or we switch between both like we see with Kyo. One is because if we make it our fault then it becomes something we can control and something we can fix; If we make it someone else’s fault then it becomes something we can fight and something we can escape. Both of these viewpoints serve the same purpose but are very different ways in which we arrive at that purpose. In my experience, the second extreme is much harder to have in childhood when the abusers are our caretakers, because blaming them and attempting to escape or lash out often goes against our self-preservation, which is just another way child survivors often get forced into the first extreme, at least until they get older. The other big thing I see in the main survivors of the show (Kyo, Isuzu/Rin, and Yuki) is the tendency to create things we need to survive. Call it habit, call it maladaptive coping, call it whatever you want. I can’t speak for everyone, but this is equally true for me in my personal experiences. When we are used to surviving, we often create things we need to survive even when we’re safe. I, personally, am at my best, at my sharpest when I am having to survive something because I have always had to survive life and I have never gotten to - or been taught how to - live it. And that is something I see in each of them. Akito, too. Which I think kind of wraps around neatly to the monologue she had: “This is the life they gave me, nobody ever offered me another one. So how do I ask when I don’t know what to ask?” It’s difficult to hear Akito say this because of how troubled and violent and abusive of a person she is, but it’s true, that’s what it feels like. The important thing is finding the resolve within yourself to make something different and finding people to help you uncover the questions you need to ask. Akito is a truly tragic example of, “Hurt people hurt people.” It’s easy to get stuck like that when you’re so isolated from good influences and love, whether it’s emotionally isolated or physically isolated or both. It’s in situations like that, where trauma runs that deep, when I think about that Firefly quote: ““If you can’t run, you walk. If you can’t walk, you crawl. And if you can’t do that… you find someone to carry you.” It’s a mentality that can become dangerous if you start relying on people too often as a crutch, but it’s also a mentality that can be life saving when you’re terrible at relying on anyone at all. We are our own worst enemies, and letting people in is risky and scary. I think Yuki said it best, though, in season 1 with Kisa. It becomes so much easier to love ourselves and forgive ourselves when we realize that someone truly loves us in a safe and healthy way despite our flaws and our setbacks. At its core, this story isn’t about trauma, it is about healing from trauma and the different forms that process can take. It’s about grace and compassion and loving each other even when it’s hard and helping each other find the questions we need to ask. That was a lot of emotion for one post, so… stay sexy, don’t throw glass at each other, and ask every goddamn question that comes to mind if that’s what it takes. Good talk. K, bye!

Yeah I'm a manga reader and I loved this episode 😭 I think it's perfect tbh, it's the most highly rated one in the series as well

ArmdVctr

I will still say FruBa is the most Christian anime, despite Christians or Christianity not ever being featured or mentioned. It just tackles a boatload of Christian themes and teachings it is mind boggling.

Evalone
>>75503984

For me, she's more drawn to Tohru :3 Where do the zodiacs goes when they need comfort ?

Jerry Ferrell

Kyo is definitely stuck in a shame spiral. I did notice that Kyo’s mother died after an argument with his father which makes me think he’s displacing some of his own guilt onto Kyo. And Kyo’s connected his mother’s death to Kyoko’s death which I think is why he can’t rationalize that her death wasn’t really his fault when he literally only had a moment to act. And he’s connected his relationship to Tohru to Kyoko’s death. So when he’s confronted with Tohru’s feelings it isn’t just about how they feel about each other because he’s essentially tied every ounce of his shame about who he is and how other people seem him to his feelings about Tohru.

agoodwintv
>>75501059

Wow! Yeah you're right that changes that scene substantially, especially I feel for Akito.

Brooklyn Doreen

Honestly I don't understand how you manage to resist binging through all these episodes with these cliff hangers, especially now that we're getting to the thick of the climax. Are you actually binging and just changing your shirt between episodes to make us think you're sticking to the schedule? If not, your self control is GODLY (not Akito godly though, she has zero self control)

agoodwintv
>>75503837

It's not jumbled at all :D I think this show does such an unbelievable job not only covering the depths of pain that the characters experience but also not that letting it be the end of the story and giving them a chance to climb out of it in a way that feels substantial and valuable. And Kyo has a long way to climb... But what makes it so exciting and hopeful to me despite all the tragedy is that even though he has regrets, even though he can trace the result of his actions to events that caused a lot of pain, there are still chances in front of him right now to make different choices. And while those things would never solve the problems of the past, it would feel so right and feel deserved for him to finally start to turn it around and allow himself to have good things to lean into for once in his life.

agoodwintv
>>75504830

Thanks for that :) About what you said about trauma, I agree that it's so much more. Wrapped up in it is the question of how do we navigate it? And there are so many interesting implications in regards to personal responsibility, relationships with others, sacrifice, interpreting events etc in a way that would be shallow and cliche in lesser hands, but here feels so grounded and relatable and important.

Brimmy

I didn't have a lot to say in my spam spazz for this episode just that Kyo had talked a lot this episode and gave me so many feels oh this is also the episode where i noticed the cracked picture frame I can't imagine how angry manga readers were back during the Original since it didn't explore any of this, we never got this far, it was very wholesome with darkness sprinkled around to give u a taste of what could be and then they got \nothing\

Tracy McGill
>>75511022

I agree. After reading the manga I pretty much noticed there was alot of things wrong with the 2001 version. I realized why Takaya wasn't too happy with the original anime. To be honest if I had been a manga reader first I probably would have been annoyed. Funnily enough fruba is what got me into manga as I never was interested at the time.

agoodwintv
>>75508008

Haha I do often change my shirt to watch multiple episodes ^^ Honestly I would binge a lot more except that I have to leave time for editing, uploading, etc

Nicolas Moeglin

I am new here so I hope i am not mensionning shows alrleady done or seen by you, here it is : death note, Demon slayer, Haikyu, Jujustu kaisen, Vinland saga (i think you ll like it), one punch man

I haven't heard this take...care to elaborate? I'm geniunely interested as a Christian myself, I personally didn't see to many Christian thought in this show other than overall concepts of love and acceptance basically personified in Girl Jesus Tohru, but that was more of a joke than actually thinking Tohru is Jesus. I heavily enjoyed Evangelion for the same reasons, the direct Christian philosophy and messaging in the show really struck me.

lineth pizarro

this episode truly shows how amazing the storytelling is!! kyo’s story has been throwing hints every now and then, like him telling “i’m sorry” to tohru while she was asleep in the episode where they first go to kyoko’s shrine, it makes it so much better to rewatch!

lineth pizarro

oh!! and that scene that shows kyo at different stages running away really hit me the first time, it captivated his character so well even if we didn’t understand it at the time. it provides reason for so many of his scenes and thoughts that it’s become one of my favorite in the whole show:) this episode is so good but so sad, it’s like when you watch something that hits home so hard that it becomes a favorite, even if it’s hard to watch it ever again.

Stephanie

I think I heard this somewhere: but this was the first or one of the few moments Yuki calls Kyo by his name since he always calls him stupid cat or something. Also yessss you’re one of the few people that notices that Kyoko avoids home quite often, before Tohru got lost Kyoko would always avoid home.
