Two quick notes: - I switched to the sub based on the poll and it definitely paid off this episode - To Your Eternity coming tomorrow instead of today :)

Nick

Sure, sure, Tanjiro can LEARN to breathe, but does he DESERVE to?

Darby

Two things: 1. Super glad you switched to the sub -- this series benefits greatly from it (all do to a degree, imo). I love how the laugh gave away Eren's VA too lol 2. One thing that stands out to me in this show is that the pacing is phenomenal. I'm very jealous that you're going to be able to binge 2 seasons and a movie worth of content. I'm so excited for this ride! No matter what people say about Demon Slayer, no one can deny that Ufotable are top tier. Every single episode in S2 is movie quality. Also, I always love when series tease characters by just having them look like people you haven't unlocked in games yet.

Matthew Richson

Took me a moment understand what you meant by MHA in your description. More time has passed in this episode then the entirety of MHA’s story thus far.

Kollie123

I actually really hate sabitos first lines in this episode in the original language, he talks about baring his suffering in silence if he’s a man and it’s just like…really? Like if tanjiro was a woman would he even okay with how tanjiro was acting? Would sabito treat a woman differently in this scenario? The dub changed the line to “a demon slayer bares his suffering in silence” and idk that just makes so much more sense to me, since that’s what tanjiro is training to be, and kinda paints a picture in your head how hard the profession is, instead of some generic tough guy manhood stuff. Not to try and start a needless sub vs dub debate, that’s like the only line difference between the two versions that ever stood out to me like this lol

Megan

Tanjiro was only 13 when his family was slaughtered so I guess the 2 year time skip serves as a way to age him up a little. It reminds me a the 3 year time skip we got with the cadets in AOT. Real training takes a lot of time.

Geneva The Weeba

'in an episode spanning more time than all 5 seasons of My Hero Academia' Goodwin's descriptions never fail to disappoint

Megan

The laugh gave the Sabito’s voice actor away for me too. Just like you I paused the episode to look it up.

Aura Y

The master-pupil relationship is pretty interesting in this show. It is not quite the same as the others we've experienced I think. I'm sure it'll be expounded upon in future episodes. Also I love the Eren-Sabito voice actor recognition. Yuki Kaji is an incredible voice actor in my opinion, he has so much range!

Fizzle

Fun fact! While Sabito shares Eren's VA, Tanjiro's is actually Falco!!

Geneva The Weeba

"I'm really looking forward to Female Demon, so I can correctly guess her identity" LMAO On a separate note though, once I get to AOT in The Goodwin Rewatch, should I add in Zeke slander as one of the categories?

Kinda hoping he watches the tv version of mugen train since it has some extra scenes sprinkled in. After watching both versions I’m not sure if there’s any reason to watch the movie version now beyond I guess all in one convince? Which isn’t really all that convenient for a reaction channel to do lol

benj

My ears…they are happy now. HOLY SHIT the hype levels for you watching this show just skyrocketed for me.

Darby
>>77283432

The time period this takes place in is the Taisho Era of Japan (somewhere between 1912-1915 iirc). The perception of how a man should hold himself was just that. Characters in shows like MHA and Black Clover also talk about being 'manly' all the time, so it must just be cultural.

KuroOberon

excellent benefit of subs, you can recognise voices from other subs!! i mean, you can do this with dubs too, but in this case it's already paying off :D

Megan

Make sure to watch after the credits because there’s always a little scene with a joke, character fact, or reflection on the episode narrated by Tanjiro!

benj

Zeke slander = Just being brutally honest about Zeke 😂😂 Totally no pro-Erwin bias going on here…

Rice

IMO one of the best things about Demon slayer is that for once it genuinely feels like anyone could be the MC. There is no chakra or one for all or founding titan or anything like that. Every ability available to the demon slayers could be achieved by anyone. They’re all just sword techniques, with enough training and work any person could rise through the ranks of the Demon Slayers.

Kollie123
>>77284826

Well this definitely isn’t true. Anyone could train to be a slayer in theory, but tanjiro definitely has some unique MC stuff going for him

Geneva The Weeba

You know with all this talk about breathing, I'm extremely surprised you didn't bring up Jeong Jeong. Leaves the pupil alone on a mountain to train by himself, focus on stances and breathing, not to mention this golden exchange: Aang: I've been breathing for hours! Jeong Jeong: You want to stop breathing?

agoodwintv

Something about the soul crushing nature of it screams "I want to be free but am struggling with the concept"

agoodwintv
>>77285165

How could I forget that! Especially in a training episode. Looks like it's time for a 3rd ATLA rewatch.

Jenny bete

I don't know if anyone has told you that, yet but Eren's japanese VA is also Todoroki's VA. Almost immediately when I heard Sabito I thought "Waiiit that's Todoroki!". The episodes keep getting better and better, so excited to go through this show with you again!

Makima

Would love to see a video in the future regarding your thoughts on each shōnen protagonist you've seen on the channel. It would be cool to put Deku, Eren, Tanjiro, Edward, and Mob side by side and talk about what you enjoyed or disliked about them individually.

TrueAuraGuardian

So, I'm personally indifferent to the language change because it was polled. I just think people that thought the dub was burning their ears(paraphrasing) were exaggerating and a little silly about it imo. I appreciate how you tend to glean value and worth in episodes that are majorly training and refinement of abilities and enjoy them as much as more action packed episodes. It's what makes your analysis of shows refreshing.

We need him to watch JJK too so we can add Itadori, than the list will be complete.

Brimmy

"His voice sounds familiar" Eren yes but also Todoroki :3 Yuki Kaji is in fricken everything i swear mmmm yis i love me a good ass sword fight <3 <3

Nick
>>77289441

I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN I RECOGNIZED HIS VOICE! his maniacal laughter sounds just like Eren suffering a breakdown What an excellent voice actor. Yuki Kaji really chose parkour for roles. He's played several, a complex protagonist, a harem protagonist, an angsty half cold half hot quirk bearing teenager, I've heard him in countless things and he plays them all perfectly

Nick

Okay I'm wondering if there's a plot reason behind why Tanjiro's sword sliced through Sabito but ended up slicing the boulder. Does he have some power that makes him essentially invisible to swords?

Nick
>>77290838

Is Sabito some sort of wind spirit person or something

NitrousOxide19

FYI In MHA there is a timeskip at the start of the show as well (the fullproof american dream training at the beach!) I love when animes do that though! This convention seems to be really popular in anime, like in Dragonball there is like a 2-3 year timeskip for every Budokai tournament.

agoodwintv
>>77286461

Ah I see. I don't think I've seen a single MHA episode in the original Japanese but that's interesting to imagine

Geneva The Weeba
>>77284421

I think this is the second time ever he's recognized another voice on his own lol. The other time that I remember was with Chris Sabat as Armstrong, who he later realized was All Might, and then recognized him also being Ayame in the video lol

ErrantSara

I've seen a few people dislike the 2 year training time, but personally i love it as it shows Tajiro trained for his power and ability, he's not some prodigy that masters swordsmanship in a few days.

jdthebud

Out of curiosity, did you watch the first 2 episodes again with the sub? Don't think it's necessary, just curious. Excited to see how you like the first arc of the show over the next few episodes.

Kollie123
>>77287058

People actin like they gotta sacrifice their first born to listen to a dub are the definition of exaggerating

MagnusVD

I haven't finished the episode yet but I saw you were talking about voice actors in the comment so I just want to share that Falco Grice from Attack on Titan and Tanjiro the main character here in demon slayer have the same sub voice actor :)

Herman

"Does Tanjirou even deserve to breathe?" followed by "[He] didn't even learn to breathe!" a minute later has to be my favorite setup and punchline thus far in your commentaries.

benj

HOLY. SHIT. Anyone watch the Demon Slayer episode that just dropped? Best episode of the entire show, hands down. I’m straight up blown away.

Aidan Pullen

You talking about that experience in the Kung Fu class really reminded me of the 8 or so years I did of Karate. My Sensei would have us just drill stuff like that constantly, and it was always very hard work. That training sticks with you too; even later now I'm not nearly as in shape as I was then, the moves are just pure muscle memory at this point.

Sean Wilson

I don't know if you are or aren't watching the end-of-episode skits after the credit sequence, but you should. They're not previews for the next episode like most anime.

Jo

I always vote for dubs. It's the only way I can consume Anime. (Thanks visual impairment) Also it seems to play better in reactions. Having said that. This and Attack on Titan. There is one Eng dub VA in each show. That... Is not good. Make your ears bleed, kind of bad. So I totally get the switch to sub. I've seen the Demon Slayer dub enough times that I can follow this and I'm curious what this particular characters original VA sounds like. It's my friend's favourite character in the show. He couldn't wait until I got to the part where this Character was introduced. I honestly didn't get the love though. I got the character, I mean the dub is not that bad. However I was assured that the OG VA vastly improves the person as a whole. So I am looking forward to finding the love through these reactions.
