Loving this late night upload before bed

willmarko

lets goo nothing like a before bed snack while watching goodwin :))

It must be tough for Urokodaki and trainers in general in this world, always wondering if you failed to teach the kids enough to survive, Urokodaki especially kept making them cut larger and larger boulders in the hopes they'd come back alive

Darby

Perfect timing on the upload! Love your breakdowns and insights, as usual. One thing: I'm not sure where you're watching the sub but some of the translations seemed off to me. I don't mind but it threw me off when I saw the demons say 'fucking kill you' and also when Urokodaki said "Sun Blades" instead of "Nichirin Swords". Very minor but just thought I'd mention it! Someone get this man a Crunchyroll subscription!

Yeah I just noticed these are definitely fan translations right? It always rubs me the wrong way when a reactor isn’t supporting the official release….we’re definitely gonna get Pillars over hashira later…which is so much less cool lol But I’m also just not a fan over how much fan translations add fuck and shit to everything

Wow you’re comment on the mythic like quality of Demon Slayer really opened my eyes in a way. I recently finished the manga and it has had such a lasting impression on me and I just couldn’t pin down why. I think this might be it though, without getting into spoilery details there are titles in Demon Slayer (for both the demon slayers and the demons) that hold incredible weight. -think the ranking of top heroes from My Hero, and these top level people are built up to be these larger than life forces of nature. Every time they appear it really feels like a mythic and legendary event that would be passed down for generations in the world of Demon Slayer. I think that weight, build up, and respect that the series has for those characters are what make it so special. I feel like anyone who’s caught up with the anime and saw the last episode would have to agree, it just feels so unbelievably monumental every time.

I think I understand what you mean concerning instinct. It's almost like unlocking a dormant part of yourself, and suddenly you understand, or sense, what it is you need to do. But for me... I found that this has only manifested for me when I was desperate to solve math problems LOL. I'll never forget one instance during a college Physics course, I had completely bombed my first test because the subject matter was so unfamiliar to me. I was so determined to pass the next test. There was this one problem that had me completely vexed, but I was desperate to get it right. I sat there for ages and read it over and over again in my head like a madwoman, and suddenly I had reached this state of extreme focus where all of the solutions I had been taught had completely left my mind, and all that was left was just me and sheer 'logic', I guess. I always found it weird that I was able to reach a mental state where I was able to solve it with just...my mind? It always weirds me out when I look back at it, because it really felt like something strange happened in my head. It's not something I was able to do normally or on a whim... only when I was desperate. And only when doing mathematics LOL. It's even weirder to me because I've always been more of an intuitive person than a purely logical person, if that makes sense. This may not even be a rare occurrence or anything, but what you said reminded me of that! ...Anyway I really like the music that plays when Tanjiro is walking through the wisteria forest. It sounds so mystical and grave... gives me chills every time. Really enjoying this reaction series! So sorry for the long spiel!

Obligatory the water effects aren’t real, the creator of the series has stated they are just visual flair, so every fight tanjiro isn’t creating real water, it’s all pure swordsmanship. The anime definitely plays them up like they are real, but it’s nice to keep in mind that everything the characters accomplish in fights in this series is pure swordsmanship

Yeah it’s WAY more obvious In the manga, but the effects make the Fights pop a lot more so I definitely appreciate how they’re played up a bit.

Fizzle

One thing about this show that you don’t find with a lot of others, and a reason why the fights (and really each individual sword slash) is so satisfying, is that the sound design is AMAZING. The water effects (and other elements) are fun, but it wouldn’t be nearly as exciting to watch if the sound designers didn’t pay such close attention to every little detail. Like, if Tanjiro is moving his head a lot, you’ll hear the clacks of his earrings, consistently. Each sword swing is given specific attention, not just the big important ones. Not to mention the impact noises!! It’s all just soooo good.

The sounds of the swords clashing actually gives me an eargasm

It's now the 9th, but yesterday, Febraury 8th, was our lovely Gyuu Tokoyami's birthday!

At 7:32....wow. Breathtaking visuals with the purple trees mixed in with that fantastic OST track with the singing. It really all came together for a moment there, this show NAILS atmosphere. I totally agree with your thoughts on how the mythological aspects in the show are extremely compelling, I think the setting and tone contribute to it a lot.

Skyler Anderson

"Why are the sword slashes so satisfying in this show"

Steve.

I didn't realize this until someone pointed it out to me, but Tanjiro also has the same actor as Falco in AoT.

Valeri

No ankle demon shares a voice actor with Zeke Jaeger btw :)

kingafreund

Oh, nice rock commentary, that connection somehow escaped me until now! I knew I liked this little arc, but I couldn't put my finger on what exactly made it so compelling for me.

jdthebud

Alex, that footage of you getting closer to the screen to try and see what's going on always makes me laugh.

Geneva The Weeba

"I think there is something like objective truth that many different avenues of reflection can arrive at," "Oh you get a HEADPAT! Look at this!" "Tanjiro also appreciates a good headpat. He belongs on this channel," "These Demon Slayers don't f-. don't mess around," "You can't be the protagonist without a good appetite. It's against the rules of anime," "Just once, I want to see an anime protagonist that doesn't like food that much," "You've joined the mask gang./It has a purpose other than looking amazing," "The world is made better by their talents," "And it's time for this plot-convenient sleepy sickness to wear off so we can hit the road," "Wake up! The plot demands it!" "The ghost children thing just opened up a lot of doors. You know, because there is nothing supernatural about demons," *gets freaked out by twins* "It's demon Sue," "What you can do, though, is breathe. Make your bones excited," "That feeling when you totally miss the Meishi period, am I right?" "Ward off this fist, am I right?" "Arrogance will be your death,"

Athena

I played Theseus in my elementary school play :) wore a beard which was cool

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but if you're interested in Tanjiro's interactions with Sabito and Makomo look up yorishiro and shimenawa ropes. I hope those are the right terms. If I can remember correctly the rope around the boulder was a shimenawa rope which in Shinto are traditionally placed on yorishiro, which are objects such as boulders and trees that are thought to attract spirits and be able to be inhabited by them. So the idea then is that the boulder was a yorishiro inhabited by Sabito's spirit, and that's why when Tanjiro was able to slash Sabito he was able to cut through the boulder.

ArmdVctr

The best thing about Tanjiro is that he treats demons as people even if he has to out them down.

Keegan Brakhage

i have no evidence for this but my sad and dark speculation is that urokodaki trained tanjiro to beat the big boy as revenge. how do you train someone for a year yet hope they don’t succeed? I think he wanted tanjiro to split that boulder so he was strong enough to defeat the big boy.
