Good day, everyone! It’s time for another YCH contest, and this time we’re gonna get lost for a bit in this ancient maze. What will we find? Or better yet, what, or who’s gonna find us…?

Ready to explore? In 400 words or less tell us a bit about you and your logs describing your journey: How you’ve heard of this maze, what drives you to explore it, what do you expect to find? Any observations, feelings of peril? All these events right BEFORE being found by the beast residing in the maze…

RULES:

Participant must be an active patron.

Submissions must be 400 words or less and submitted in the comment section.

Contest ends on April 28 at 11:59, winners will be announced on April 30.

All character represented must be adult males, furry or human characters allowed.

Winners of last YCH contest are free to participate but are not eligible to win.

Good luck everyone and have fun exploring! The prize at the center of the maze it’s quite worth it!

———————-WE HAVE THE WINNERS!!!———————

THANK YOU ALL FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE LATEST YCH CONTEST, AFTER MY COMMITTEE AND I READ ALL THE ENTRIES, WHICH WAS A BLAST, WE DECIDED ON THE WINNERS!

IN THE PAST IT HAS HAPPENED THAT A COUPLE OF CONTESTANTS SHARE A WINNING PLACE, IN THIS CASE THIRD PLACE GOES TO R AND PUP HADES!

BOTH ENTRIES DID A GREAT JOB IN THEIR RESPECTIVE WAYS: WE ENJOYED THE DESCRIPTIONS AND ATMOSPHERE THAT R CREATED AND THE OMINOUS TENSION THAT ESCALATED IN PUP HADES’S STORY.

SECOND PLACE GOES TO CAPTAIN CZAR!!

WE JUST LOVED THE PERSONAL REASON WHY HIS CHARACTER EMBARKED ON THIS QUEST, A “FOOLS ERRAND” ACCORDING TO HIM, IT FELT VERY SYMPATHETIC!

FIRST PLACE GOES TO NANOFF!

WE LOVED THE SETTING FOR HIS STORY: A KNOWLEDGEABLE BUT PROUD AND ARROGANT SURVEYOR OF A CONQUERING NATION EXPLORING VAST RUINS THAT EXCEEDED HIS EXPECTATIONS AND BROUGHT HIS DOWNFALL INTO THE CLUTCHES OF THE BEAST THAT INHABITS THE MAZE.

AGAIN I WANT TO THANK YOU ALL FOR PARTICIPATING AND FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN EVERYTHING, YOU PEOPLE ARE THE BEST!!

Explorer’s Log – Entry #17 Name: Bramble the Bear Species: Brown Bear (luxuriously fluffed, shamelessly plush) Objective: Acquire Bull Milk for Ice Cream Experiment #42 Location: The Labyrinth of Horns Word of this maze first reached me from an old, half-tipsy weasel merchant at the Velvet Tusk Tavern. Said there’s a beast in there—a huge bull, hulking and proud, with milk so rich and creamy it could turn any frozen dessert into an aphrodisiac. Naturally, I packed my churn, spoon, and a flask of honey (for bargaining… or bribery). The air is thick in here—like the maze knows I’m sweet and soft and maybe not meant for something this… dangerous. Every turn feels tighter, the stone walls warm underpaw. I can’t tell if I’m blushing from exertion or the way my belly jiggles with each step. The torchlight dances on mossy carvings, all horned figures and scenes of offerings… and pleasure? Entry #18 He’s close. I can smell him now—earthy, masculine, creamy. My whiskers twitch. I found hoofprints the size of dinner plates. There’s steam rising from deeper within the stone corridors. I keep imagining broad hands gripping my shoulders, deep laughter in the dark. What if he doesn’t want to share? Or worse—what if he does, but wants payment in… kind? Entry #19 The walls hum. My fur’s damp with sweat—or is that anticipation? I paused to catch my breath against a pillar, and it was warm, pulsing. This place is alive. Or maybe I’m just imagining things now. My churn is getting heavy, and I may have whispered sweet nothings to it earlier. Entry #20 I heard him. A deep snort. The scrape of hooves. A shadow bigger than any I’ve seen stretched around the next bend. My heart’s pounding like a tribal drum. I should turn back. I won’t. I came for cream—but I think I want the whole bull. If this is the end of my entries, tell them: Bramble chased the taste of ecstasy into the arms of a beast. And maybe—just maybe—he got more than he bargained for… and just enough to make a very, very special batch of ice cream. I think I’m going to need a bigger churn….

Captain Czar

Entrant #707-B (Male, 30s, Human). Attempt date: Ides of the Month of Flowers - dusk. The last bit of the clue was woven around my fingers. The mousy guard at the beginning of the maze had given me the ball of indigo-dyed yarn as he droned on about the challenge. It wasn’t anything I hadn’t heard at the inns back in Maropolis, the closet city. Everyone there warned me against anything dyed red. Purple was even off the table. Luckily, or unluckily, I didn’t have the riches of kings to afford those expensive dyes. Besides the untreated canvas and wool I wore, the only pop of color was a blue tunic my father gave me on the day of my commissioning. I let the last bit of the clue slip from my fingers as I looked back at the maze. Hours of searching didn’t yield a single bit of that silver promised to me. A fool’s errand, I know, but one handful of silver would be enough to let me buy that sailboat that I’d been eyeing at the market for years now. I sighed, knowing that the journey to the maze would counterbalance the measly amount of money I still had in my possession. I picked up the string and began rolling it back into the ball of yarn. It was dark now so I had to rely on touch to guide me back to the entrance. Looking up was pointless. The absence of any light let my mind wander back to the guard. His spiel was about safety, or something like that. He kept repeating something. Hull? No, that can’t be right. Full? What would be full? Certainly not my coin purse. Ah, yes, he kept saying bull. A bull was supposed to prowl this maze but I hadn’t seen any b—

(248 Words) Name: Keiji Leone Species: Barbary Lion Profession: Bull Rider Acclaimed professional bull rider, Keiji Leone reported to have gone “soul searching” two weeks ago. Nobody has seen or heard from him since, and fans fear for the cowboy’s safety. I had to search. I had to at least try. Grand yet musty halls are all Keiji sees as he walks forward, hand pressed to the left wall of the labyrinth. There have been rumors of a great beast residing in a maze beneath some mountain on some island. Any sane and rational person would toss the idea aside as just a legend… that’s a lot harder to do when every piece of imagery you’ve seen surrounding the maze has been accompanied by bulls, horns, and great behemoths of muscle and sweat. Two weeks. I’ve been on the move for two weeks. No breaks. My last stay at a hotel was 5 days ago, but I was smart. I prepared. I knew I’d be hiking and climbing for long enough to exhaust a man twenty times over. I have food. Not only do I have food, I’ve had food. The winding, yet perfectly even tunnels smell of both home, and of barn… I know the smells well. The warmth of a bed. The stink of active beasts. The cold of stone. Oh how close I feel. I’m so close to what I search for, I can almost taste it! The smell, the taste, the heat… it’s getting closer.

When I was sent to inspect the grand temple of our Majesty's latest conquest, I expected a routine job. At worst, an inconveniently large structure that takes years to dismantle, or an unsuitable location for our superior building techniques, or too little valuable materials to salvage and repurpose. I was quickly assured the latter wouldn't be a concern as I approached the tall marble walls of the structure, escorted by a local guide assigned to aid me in my task by the viceroy in charge of the recently conquered island. The timid man's grasp on our language was poor, but sufficient. I was a little concerned when the man's skittishness, natural for subjugated people, gave way to horror the closer we got to the entrance. At least until he started blabbering on about a protector (perhaps a guardian), something about a disturbance. Poor fellow, probably lamenting how easy his island's military crumbled to ours. I began walking the twisting corridors of the structure. I had definitely seen worse in my many inspections of more primitive cultures, but the architecture was still derivative, sparse in decoration, and what little there was, was in very poor taste. Threads of yarn of different colors strewn everywhere. Perhaps a local custom, or a leftover from some heathen ritual. A far cry from the paintings and buttresses that will take their place. After making a third consecutive right turn, I found myself in front of an almost impossibly long hallway. I started counting my steps as I walked it down. Something must be wrong. I had taken some measurements of the structure from the outside, to assess how many villas for the royal family could be built in place of the structure once it's taken down, and my estimation of the hallway's length far exceeded it. It must have been the guide's whimpering that distracted me and threw off my calculations. We finally make it to the other end, only to hear a deep, loud noise around the corner. The guide drops the torch and flees in terror. I try to chase after him, but the sound of his footsteps grows fainter and fainter. He had picked up one of the many threads of yarn on the ground and followed it, possibly back to the entrance. I was not quick enough to see which color.

Excerpt from the journals of Capitan Aliester (Human male in his thirties) Captain’s Log #40 I swear whoever wrote this recipe for the philosopher’s stone was some kind of nutcase. “Sweat from a merman; Moss from elderly golem; Saliva from a werewolf pack leader; Ashes from an ifrit warrior; and most importantly the essence from a Minotaur in his prime.” Half of these objects were easily obtained, though some I had use some of my more advanced persuasion techniques to get. I do need to get in touch with Skarr again though. That wolf definitely knew his way around ropes. Anyways, this blasted recipe better work, cause I’ve been stuck in this hellish labyrinth for almost five hours now and swear something has been stalking me for at least the past three of them. Captain’s Log #41 If I ever find the one that built this hellscape, I’m going beat the snot out of them. I swear I’ve passed the same pile of rocks ten times in the past five minutes. To make matters worse, every time I try to mark my path something comes by and erases it as soon as look away. If I wasn’t paranoid before, I sure am now. There’s nothing normal about this maze. Captain’s Log #42 I’ve finally managed to get to the labyrinth’s core. Judging by the size of the bed and other furniture, my hunch about a Minotaur living here was correct. Though curiously said beast seems to be absent at the moment. I do however hear a peculiar noise coming from behind closed door located on the farthest wall from me. There’s also a fairly musky odor emanating from behind the door as well. God I hope this recipe is correct, because I have a feeling that things are going to get quite messy soon.

22nd of Veshoun, 287 We set out 30 strong and already our numbers are beginning to dwindle. I do not blame the others for turning back. I wish you could see this place, my love – the scale alone is enough to make my legs tremble. The walls consist of colossal pale stones fitted together with such precision that I could scarcely fit a fingernail in its seams. It took us half a day’s journey to reach the first juncture. And after some debate, we settled on the rightmost path. This we did at the bidding of an older man who claims to have made the journey once before. 13th of Abradiem, 287 Another dead end – weeks of progress wasted. The others are furious and the old man spends his days in his bottle and sleeps with his knife unsheathed. I fear for his safety if something is not done soon. We have found the true path and will begin in earnest tomorrow. Hopefully this will settle the others. 15th of Abradiem, 287 We awoke to find one of our number dead, his throat slit, and the old man missing. Half of us decide to turn back. But I will not abandon you, my love. We are left with the lion’s share of the provisions and for that I am eternally grateful. 4th of Yawl, 287 Day and Night no longer come to us. The sky sits atop the maze, yellow and sulking. Four more have left us, favoring a separate path. We are just three in number now. I cannot even wish them luck for there is only one true path to this place. And I fervently hope that it is our own. 10th of Yawl, 287 Dead ends to the north and south. Three days lost in the return. Though the days seem endless, the shadows still follow their natural sway. Of this I am certain. 14th of Yawl, 287 I am alone. My love, forgive the sins I commit for the sake of loving you. 1st of Hasthe, 288? I do not eat. I do not tire. My feet move ever forward. I will reach the other side. And I will find you there, my love. ? My love, my love. My love My love My love My love My love My love My love my

Entry #1 The task I’ve been given is simple: to investigate the “labyrinth” within the exclusion zone. Since its discovery more than four-hundred years ago, there has been no recorded instance in which a person has returned after entering it. Due to the nature of this mission, I’ve been equipped with a tracking device to report my location to authorities. Entry #2 Upon initial inspection of the exclusion zone, nothing seems outwardly amiss. The only thing worth noting is the unusual musky odor that hangs heavily in the air around the air, likely due to the wildlife or something. Entry #3 As if contrary to my previous entry, something strange happened—as I approached the labyrinth’s entrance, my equipment began malfunctioning; likely a contributing factor to the disappearances. I’m not afraid, however. I've had years of survival and combat training, so I shall proceed as normal. Entry #4 It has been a few hours since my last update. The pungent, musky odor lingering air that I noticed when I arrived hasn’t disappeared, but instead gotten stronger. It’s almost overpowering, but that’s not the forefront of my concerns right now—I suspect I’m not alone down here. In my wanderings, I’ve passed by a number of signs: fresh hoof marks in the dirt, scrape marks on the walls and strange noises I can’t quite explain. It seems much larger than what ive been trained to deal with. I think it’s for the best that I abandon this mission; I have a sinking feeling about this place that I just can’t shake. Entry #5 I … couldn’t bring myself to turn back. I’m not sure why, but I just couldn’t help it. All I can think about is this damn smell. It’s strong enough to give me a headache, and yet I find that I’m … drawn to it? It sounds absurd as I’m writing this, but I need to figure out what its source is. I’m going to continue deeper. Entry #6 I’ve found the center of the maze. There’s nothing here that seems to be the source of the disappearances, only the evidence that something—or someone—has been living here. The musky scent lured me here, and though I should feel frightened by this revelation, I feel … not like myself. I hear something approaching this room. I should be terrified, but I cannot bring myself to leave. I’ll add another entry when—

A Bull's Final Expedition Property of Grant Just before retirement my final task is to investigate an undocumented island in search of unusual specimens to return to the university for analysis. I have only been supplied a few pieces of paper for observations, I better save them for important notes. Night 2: The most peculiar sight has just occurred. While dozing off to sleep with the ambient noise of the ocean waves on the rocky shore, and the crackling of my campfire next to me. My heart was pounding, thinking of a plan for the coming days when suddenly everything got dark. Not only had my fire gone out, additionally, the moon itself appears to have popped out of existence. All noises ceased. Then streaks of color filled the sky, blues and greens. It was strangely calming, and this show of color seemed to have gone on for what felt like days. I was eventually woken by water hitting my hooves. Quickly getting up, I feel more refreshed than I have in many long years. Day 7: After the event that happened on night 2 I feel noticeably stronger and quicker. With this newly found energy I have decided to take a trek up the nearby mountain to get a lay of the land and find some new points of interest to explore. When I approached the top I was shocked to find it contained a well maintained field of flowers, stretching out for as far as I could see, with a large stone seating area to overlook the island. After taking in the view for quite some time I noticed a large structure to the south. A new place to look into! Day 14: My heart flutters with excitement! This island has such unique creatures all around, large and strong looking, I wonder if these effects are from the island itself? The structure I observed a few days ago appears to be a pyramid in shape. After going through the main entrance it looks to be full of many branching corridors. As I go further in, it looks more and more like a maze. Not only that, there appear to be small earthquakes every once in a while. The puddles of water are shaking noticeably next to me as I write this. And a strange large shadow has been gradually cast over me as I write today's entry…
