This new channel has opened my eyes to a lot of things and today's episode is one such example. Turns out that thing I have always thought was just a weird habit - like humming the same four notes forever - actually has a name and a purpose?! Today we're looking at vocal stimming and what it is, how it works, and why I definitely should get tested for ADHD. I may in fact not be too old for this...This full-length episode is available for all premium tiers!

To answer your question, vocal stimming can be a wide range of things, but you are absolutely right that most of these are just memes. However, at least with autism, it can be that you repeat phrases from movies (For me, princess Bride is a constant for me. "Anybody want a peanut?!?") Or if someone uses like the word plethora.. " would you say there is a plethora of pinatas?" From Three amigos. It almost feels like a compulsive urge to respond with the quote. But what you described is also a vocal stimming. I will cluck my tongue, make up nonsense songs, or a one thing for me is to repeatedly say the word "think" when I am trying to figure something out. Just "okay..think...think..think..." But yeah, it's often making noises without even realizing you have done it that long. And it can drive people around you crazy.

While I'm not an expert or anything, from what I've seen a "vocal stim" seems to just be the modern term for regular, repeated, very specific bits or inside jokes one has with friends. Like something that's been boiled down to the point where just a specific word or phrase in the right context will get a laugh from you and your buddies. And, modern times being modern times, usually that joke or phrase is a reference to some meme or video most people in the friend group have seen. I'd guess the term "vocal stim" was co-opted to refer to that sort of thing due to the frequency and consistency with which those specific bits / inside jokes get repeated among the friend group.

I adore Ariana Grande! She is so funny 🤣 My vocal stims tend to come from old Vine vids. Nods to silly little quips like: “Road work ahead?! I sure hope it does!!” Etc.
