When I took on the task of understanding Gen Alpha and Gen Z slang, I thought we'd be figuring on when to use "slay", but what started all those weeks ago has brought us here. To Toronto Slang. Venturing into the GTA (Great Toronto Area) has unlocked an entire new series of words that I didn't even know where a thing. "Wagwan," "Ahlie," "Bare," "Mandem," - when to call someone a yute vs when to call them fam. Is it ever appropriate for us to say Dun Kno"? (The answer is probably no.) Join us as we try to decode the slang that makes us feel like we need a passport just to visit Canada's largest city. Maybe I'm too old for this...This Full-Length episode is available for all premium tiers!

So "marved" could be a morphing of the slang "Hank Marvin" (starving) from the UK?

EDIT: in the longer vid, he suggests that a few things might come from Jamaica. Which most do, & you know where had a lot of Jamaican immigrants? Britain. The overall speech pattern sounds like the Windrush gen's kids. Wagwan has been a slang in black communities in the UK (mostly the south) for maaaany years, that started bleeding into white folk in the cities & towns. Same with fam & mans, but that's been a bit more universal than wagwan. The "blap" that the woman says (vid 3) is something like what kids were saying when I was in year 11 in 2005 😅 (similar sounds, varied depending on where you lived) Bad ting has also been British slang. I honestly forget they're Canadian until they speak between slang because they kept the British accent. Bare too. "It's bare cold, mans" is something an annoying coworker used to say to me in 2014 🤣
