All Jewelers know the power of gemstones and jewelry. But only expert artisans know the true potential of a well-cut ruby, capable of holding enchantments for much longer than any scroll or parchment.

These are the basics of a 'Spellgem' crafting rules that can be expanded on by any GM.

My recommendation is:

- You can Increase the level of the spell with more valuable gemstones. Material costs require should be at least twice the amount of a spell scroll of the same level.

- Very minor spell effects, such as minor illusions or being able to communicate telepathically, do not require attunement, but still, require cost.

- Harsher GMs may request a Tool Kit proficiency roll to determine whether crafting attempts are successful - failures resulting in lost materials.

What do you think??

Sounds great. I think I'll tell my players different gems are associated with different schools of magic and adjust the craft DC based on how compatible the gem is with the spell. It's a good excuse to encourage them to go gem hunting 😁

Ahh color coded gem schools! I like that. I think it'd be a cool thing to have in a setting where gems are more frequent than paper or parchment. Plus it's a cool thing to spend all that useless gold on!
