I've always liked the idea of items saved for desperate situations - ones which, in saving the character from great change (death, madness...etc) instead reward a permanent alternative. This tends to be more interesting and valuable than simply finding a 'gemstone of resurrection' or some such thing.

I dunno, I just know a lot of players who want to be Storm from X-men.
