A sequel to Monolith and Warner Bros.' Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is set to launch in 2017, multiple sources are reporting. The follow-up has been a poorly kept secret over the past year , but now I've finally been able to pin down some more details about it.

The project has been in development for a while now - about three years - and its rumoured title is 'Middle-earth: Shadow of War'. It has been described as "very large" in ambition, and the developers are hoping to implement some big improvements over its predecessor. Warner Bros. Interactive was originally expected to unveil the game late last year in around November, but its reveal was pushed back.

According to one source at WB, the publisher is attempting to shorten the marketing cycle of some of its games, meaning they're intending to leave less time between announcements and releases. Shadow of War will adopt this strategy, as they are currently aiming to launch the title in around late Q3/Q4 2017. The game is set to be officially announced this March.

WB will be releasing the sequel on multiple platforms, including Xbox One and PS4. I have not been able to ascertain whether or not they are working on versions for Nintendo Switch or PC.
