By now, the larger gaming sites out there have begun to receive their Nintendo Switch review materials ahead of the March 3rd launch of the system. When can we expect to hear more about the Switch and its games? Let's break it down.

So far, there are two major embargoes that journalists are subject to. On February 23rd, the first will expire, allowing them to give their final preview impressions of the hardware and show it out of the box on camera. Then, on March 1st, the first wave of Zelda: Breath of The Wild and reviews of the Switch hardware will be released.

With that said, you might find it interesting to know that so far Nintendo has not guaranteed anyone review copies of the Nintendo Wii U version of Zelda. It's not mentioned in any of the embargoes and there are currently no signs that there will be any distributed to sites. I reached out to a source at Nintendo UK who claims there are no plans to send out copies of that version before launch and that they're hoping to capitalise on the Switch version (understandably).

Update:

It looks like Wii U copies are now being sent out upon request in North America.

Any idea what performance is like on the Wii U version? That jungle footage from the Game Awards looked rough. Can't afford a Switch at launch, so that's the version I'm going to play.

Personally, I think the Wii U version will be playable but if you care about performance, you may consider waiting. The E3 version's performance is representative of the final game, so there is some chugging. The Switch one runs a lot more consistently and has some small improvements.
