To Catch a Predator gave us our public conception of what a "sex offender" is. How wrong was it? And how much damage has that misrepresentation caused?

Yes, just taking longer to upload there than it did to upload here

One of the real fun parts of the sex offender registry is that, in many jurisdictions, you can become a "sex offender" for public urination or non-sexual public nudity, such as "streaking". There are even cases where teenagers have been prosecuted on CP charges for sending nude pictures of themselves to classmates, and in one case ended up on an offender registry. Back in the '00s, the same time To Catch A Predator was doing its thing, there was a wave of paranoia about teen "sexting", which resulted in a number of jurisdictions "making an example" of teens busted for sharing nude pictures of themselves by prosecuting them for sex offenses. IIRC most of the highest profile incidents got reduced on appeal or due to public backlash, but the fact that adult prosecutors felt it necessary to punish stupid horny teenagers as though they were adult sexual predators was ridiculous.

Only got 3 minutes into this before I got the notification it's on Nebula. Lol great timing!

Amazingly thorough! It's so hard to get through the public discourse wall of "theyre monsters, fuck em" which hampers all actual discussion.

I finally got around to watching one of the interviews and somehow missed that this was uploaded. Super excited to watch! The little therapy sketch at the beginning was brilliant btw. Funny and also strangely relatable.

Wow, I think this might be my favorite copaganda video. Largely because you've successfully changed my mind on this particular issue. Perhaps gross, but I was fine with public shaming of abusers. And with this gross entertainment being the judge, jury, and executioner. I came into this video somewhat defensive of this position, but I really think you brought in every bit of evidence as to why this method is messed up and flat out wrong. I watched it last night and have been reflecting on it all morning, but I really see the other side of this now and I'm really glad you made this video. Just saw its on youtube and I'll definitely be sharing with some friends (they love me at parties too lol). One recommendation you might have been given already that fits well with this and your Cops/On Patrol video: have you read Chain-gang All-Stars? It fits in extremely well with your copaganda series and it would be great to see you interview the author and get his opinion on these issues. Also, I'm just now remembering that one episode of Black Mirror "White Bear" - I didn't get that episode when it came out. But, after watching this video, I finally understand it now. Great job with this one!

Re-joined to help with the de-monetization and therapy bills. Great work

thank you so much! this was obviously a tough one to work on (it's long and a difficult subject to research) so it means a lot that you heard me out! haven't read Chain-gang allstars but it definitely looks relevant!

Exceptional, eye-opening work as always, Jackson. Still surprises me that you enjoy capitalism but, hey, nobody's perfect
