Jon Stewart is one of the most influential political commentators of the 21st Century, a champion for liberals, and one of the most dominant presences on TV ever (10 straight Emmys!). He's returned to TV with The Problem with Jon Stewart, and it got me wondering: What the hell happened to Jon Stewart?

Hey Jackson, for some reason my name didn't show up in the credits, although I'm in a sufficiently high tier. Is there any way to add me in now?

Thanks for the heads up Jack, I'll fix that before it goes public!

I think one thing Jon Stewart reminds us of was that Liberalism of the 90s and 2000s was often people like his audience of upper middle class straight white men who spoke on *behalf* of liberal issues like immigration, racism, criminal justice, homophobia, sexism etc. but were not materially affected *by* the issues. Slowly, the left is reforming on this and learning that we need to speak up in allyship with those materially affected and not on behalf of and that the straight white man does not always need to be the loudest voice in the room. I'm so glad you're doing a serious deep dive into this because Stewart is like one of those ice cores we dig up to discover what the climate was like 10,000 years ago. In particular, I hope you cover his terrible movie making career after the Daily Show. It was stunning to me that, in his movie Irresistible, the premise is that this random guy achieves viral fame while standing up for the rights of an immigrant family that is prominently shown as citizens of the town and yet when it comes time for him to ramp up his political campaign, no immigrant volunteers are shown helping him politically organize. The only way the "Hispanics" are conceptualized are a demographic to be targeted with advertising. To me, it was an emblematic scene of someone whose world view had become so baked in that politics was about white people acting on behalf of POC and that a POC's role was to be grateful for the help they were given that he couldn't imagine POCs taking a instrumental or driving role. It was a real clarifying point in showing just how politics had moved on since the Stewart era just how savagely Irresistible was reviewed by pretty much everyone and I hope you cover it!

Also, I really like Innuendo Studio's take here https://youtu.be/MAbab8aP4_A?t=360 On how a deeply embedded principle of Liberalism is an aversion to beliefs and a love of process. Liberals believe that if you can just get the process right, the right beliefs fall out at the end of it so we should focus all of our energy on democracy and oversight and transparency and education and evidence based science and if we just do it hard enough, everyone will realize that we shouldn't hate gay people and ban abortions. That video helped explain to me so, so much why Jon Stewart is the way he is.

Fantastic Vid guy. I can't wait for more from the War on Gen X and their nihilistic cynical wit. I feel like its the perfect area for someone focused on TV, since Gen X in their cynicism are relatively absent from electoral politics (and its idealism) but so overly present in Film, TV and Tech. Can't wait to see your takes!

Oh I've definitely seen it and it was definitely terrible! We'll definitely be hitting that in part 2, as well as Stewart's issues with POC (Wyatt Cenac, and he definitely seems to be trying to address this in The Problem with Jon Stewart)

Also love that Innuendo Studio series <3

The idea that "sunshine is the best disinfectant" had been a very popular belief among liberals, including myself. Then Trump happened and that worldview was called into question. It seemed that a large number of people couldn't be persuaded and that people believed things we considered "insane" all this time. It is something liberals and leftists still struggle to respond to, which often results in picking a side between revolution or reformism.

Ugh, loved this! I remember watching him and Colbert in middle school back before I knew what satire was. I remember HATING Stephen because I thought he fully believed in the things he said when he busted out the mock conservative shtick. It took way too long for me to catch on lol but I fully agree with ur statement towards the end - Stewart's centrism really pushed me left. I only have fuzzy memories of Occupy Wallstreet but I just remember feeling a sense of unease at how they were talked about. I think it was mostly due to me being a sensitive kid and not liking how often they were mocked/ridiculed since I really wasn't old enough to grasp the deeper meaning of what was going on, but made me splinter from the slightly left of center and lean towards listening to my friends and family who were actively being harmed by the recession. I always enjoy all the work you put into these videos, super excited for the next one!!

Thanks for covering The Daily Show and their failed coverage of protests like Occupy. It was as if the generation the show had inspired recognized that a lot wasn’t going to change simply by being smug, but actually showing up collective civil disobedience. And their response was to say, “Hey I get it, but LOUD NOISES!” I’m beginning to hear some of the same attitude in Chapo Trap House, where they are right point out hypocrisy but reluctant to own their place in the modern media landscape as a source of news (see the self-own Dirtbag Left moniker). This should often be reminder that there is world of difference between actively participating in struggle vs. reacting to it.

Uggg...I saw this. Honestly i think Stewart could maybe do a good job in a small local government office but I don't want him in congress or as president like some people on reddit seem to want.
