I hope you get this letter soon. I haven't been to bed. I had a hot dog at 4am. I thought it would cheer me up, but it was kind of sad, sitting in the kitchen eating a hot dog alone in the quiet.

I spend a lot of time lately thinking about how to find community again. I think I need it in my life, and when I hear about your weeks, about your saturday afternoons and sunday mornings I'm jealous. Do you have tips? Or even just ideas? How do I get back to where you are? I've turned my back on so much, out of fear. How do I get back? I'm less afraid now, but just as alone.

So I spent an hour looking at military style cots last night, with the idea to have one in my room. To make my current bed, sheets and quilts pristine, and the fantasy is that I will act like everything is normal, and at night unfold and construct my cot. And sleep against the wall, alone and safe. And it won't be sad, it will be spartan. It won't be lonely, because it will be a choice.

What about a penpal?

This reminds me of my favorite conundrum.... How do you make friends as an adult if you don't see new people at work and don't meet peers in carpool because you're happily child-free? It's been a lonely 5 years for me in Boston. So much of adulthood friendship feels like "out of sight, out of mind." Maybe I need a cot too....

Could I write to you? Maybe make you a mixtape? (Remember those)? Or a floppy disk crammed with random white noise, old shareware games, forgotten Geocities sites, MS-Paint drawings of idealised landscapes, that kind of thing? You've been writing for so long, maybe it's time to have people write back?

Loathe as I am to recommend FB, I’m in a few groups with people who have common interests. It’s a low barrier for entry and you can participate as much or as little as you want. Also we’d definitely all send you letters and be your village ❤️

I have no idea if this is your thing, but the single easiest way I've found is to join a D&D group. If there's a Friendly Local Gaming Store near you, they may well run Adventurer's League weekly sessions, where anyone can pitch up and join a game. If you go every week, you quickly build a friendship group. Plus routine is nice, as is pretending to be someone else for a few hours.

I came here explicitly to offer to be a penpal and I see that everyone else has had the same idea.

My twitter people are my family. I love so many of them dearly and we talk daily on twitter, in direct messages and we all send each other mail. I like having my own space and being home a lot so this is perfect for me. If you would like to be a pen pal (I send pretty good packages, not to toot my own horn 😊) I would love to be a tiny part of your community.

I like your idea of the cot. I've spent so many nights sad and alone in a bed that feels like its the size of an ocean. Do you have a discord server, joey? I started a little server over the pandemic. It felt kind of like a houseplant at first. It took lots of watering, but its become a nice space.

I recently decided to reach out to a friend I hadn’t heard from in a couple years. We were catching up and I told her that my biggest fear in relationships is always that I care more about someone than they care about me, like they’re higher on my list than I am on theirs. But then at the same time, I will absolutely kick a dead horse until it tells me it’s dead. Or just to fuck off, which has certainly happened. In turn, my friend shared that she feels like such an awful friend that her guilt drives her away from making contact with people she really cares about. Essentially, we’re a perfectly fucked up pair and I’m so so glad that we’re talking again. I’m still fairly isolated, but now I have hope that perhaps other friendships are not dead, merely lying dormant. Maybe you can try looking for community in the last place you found it. Maybe it’s still there.

sometimes when things feel big or i need a change to sleep i set the tent up in the courtyard and pretend i am adventuring.
