If it’s any consolation to Devon, the weapon mastery options aren’t mid combats choices. It’s a “should I get so good at the hand axe that every time I hit someone with one I get advantage for the next attack or should I focus on swinging a greataxe so well I can attack hordes of enemies at once, getting free attacks on a second opponent if I hit the one standing next to it” choice. So a semi-permanent buff to how a melee character deals damage, that you can swap out as it makes sense narratively.
