That was a great chapter! I still have to wonder if/when they will develop Archon simulations for Rei to fight. After this many years fighting them, they should have a good record of their abilities and tactics. That would probably skyrocket Rei once he gets into the A’s.

Love the fight sequence, that was great! Then I cringed when I got to Abel.... But what's this? She didn't know about him until after his first semester? Hmmm 🤔 does that mean she did not authorize the attack at sectional? What about Kallus? I keep thinking about the mystery person he was talking to, was it his Father? Again you're writing keeps me in suspense and I Love IT!!! Thank you for the chapter Bryce!

Can’t wait for Aria to get her Shard. I mean she’s bound to have such a dramatic transformation with her being so far along. Honestly I just can’t wait for her, Logan and Chancery to get their shards and for the tournaments to start up again. It’s going to be so exciting to read

My theory is that it is Shido itself that is hacking these fights, upping them to be as difficult as it knows it and Rei can handle, in order to propagate maximum growth.

I love how you subtly addressed the threat of Central in only two pages, showing the appreciation of Dent’s patronage, and making it more likely that Central will continue with the status quo.

It seems Abel became aware of him when he developed Type Shift, which was at the end of his first semester, which was before both the attack at sectionals AND the hacked parameter testing. I liked them showing Abel with how it began humanizing her. Personally, I have always seen her point of view and don't disagree with any actions she's taken (except for sectionals if that WAS her). The parameter testing hack was justified because she needed to see what he could handle, not the fake cap that Bretz and Dent put him under for the last endurance test as well as the hacked one. Her pushing him is justified because he is concerned with the end of Humanity which is happening in less than a decade. All of it is justified because Rei himself signed up to be the 'Guinea pig'. I get that she is a 'bad guy' right now, but all of her actions make sense for the circumstances they are all in.

I really hope that when Rei gets his next evolution, it's not just a lance upgrade. I don't want Abel having any control over how Shido advances.

I often thought the same thing except for the conversations with the Mind where it stated it’s dedicating a certain percentage of processing power to look into and prevent Rei from being attacked again. However I might be remembering that wrong or it might have been worded imply that, and instead is using that processing power to determine how it can most effectively power-level Rei without permanently harming him.

Yes it was a softer version of her, and I can understand her desire to have a weapon against the enemy. And the guinea pig reference that he made in the interview with the Mind, makes me think it is the Mind that is hacking the systems to push Rei. And for me personally, if I'm going to play, I need to know I'm in a game and I need to know the stakes that way I can put all my heart into it. But that just comes from someone who's been manipulated most of her life. 😊

Between her comments to nobody (Rei and Aria) in the hospital and this scene, we are starting to see a more human side to Abel. I can’t even imagine having to find a way to stop humanity from going extinct. It feels like after so long, she’s finally found a life preserver and is clutching at it desperately.

If Rei was a different kind of person, he would tell humanity to go screw itself. He has been socially isolated most of his life and got the bare minimum care as a child due to being a ward. He doesn't really owe humanity anything so why should he be tortured for the benefit of humanity (and I count being put in the hospital multiple times for circumstances out of his control, like the parameter testing and the sectionals fiasco, to be torture.

Maybe a telescoping sword? There are only so many weapons he can get good at after all. He's going to run out of training time if he keeps getting more weapons.

What is it with Bryce turning bad guys into sympathetic characters?? I *like* Logan now. Now Abel is coming around. He wouldn't dare doing anything clever like that with our REAL bad guys like Reese or Sidorov. Right? (Right?)

I dont like the way Shira is towards Maddison Kent. It feels... icky. Like she's about to start hitting on her. I mean, Shira herself is icky. Slimy. Her sociopathic tendencies are very apparent. I see why Dent hates her.

This was the perfect way to decompress from a long day while getting ready for bed. I really like the 2v1 battles Rei is having. I can’t wait to see more of them along with the team battles. With Firesong leveling up I am looking forward to seeing them put a beat down on a bunch of other teams. So many things to look forward to, including seeing Rei and Sarah talk.

I do love how you manage to humanize many of the antagonists in this story. Even if I don't like Abel I can understand and even somewhat sympathize with her. It's easy to write people you love to hate, but someone you want to hate but almost can't is much more nuanced.

Good fights, good feedback, good new insights into all the characters. I love the humanity of each different person that was more closely highlighted. Illuminating secondary characters is a rarer gift in an author than one might believe. Excellent chapter worth the wait. Thanks.

I'm on the opposite end there. I'm hoping he gets a halbeird. It would give him more reach and could be used almost as a mauler weapon with the right application of strength. Also keep in mind it's Dent and his Kamiya instructors running this experiment not Abel atm.

I think Sidorov is irredeemable, he might even turn out like the serial killer Holly Kealing (sp) and have his device removed. As for Reese I don't know.

Loved the fight this chapter, it might honestly be my favorite this series. It just felt smooth to read imo. I don’t remember all the names, but I’m assuming Gathers was one of the lackeys who jumped Rei in book 1? I don’t know why the gang would treat him otherwise, unless he and Rei had some offscreen altercation. I’m surprised Abel didn’t know of Rei until the end of the Semester. The MIND not sending a heads-up to the higher ups is an oddity. We also know of it’s also strangely humanly desire to want Abel dead is crazy for an AI this powerful. Dent with her fascination in old world media, should definitely have ran across “Evil ruler of the Galaxy” AI. Unless the MIND scrapped everything? Idk it just seems weird to me how human the MIND is with no one questioning it, book 1 definitely gave a kiddish vibe when Rei was having his interview pre-cad assign. With a more cynical personality in book 2.

QUESTION! What colors are Sarah's CAD?? In F&S CHP 52, it was described as orange...but in book 3 CHP 38, it seems like Sarah is saying her and Rei's cad have the same Colors.. What am I missing?
